Oh, I'm sorry, did I break your concentration somewhere between science and superstition?Hey everyone, sorry to say after more than 160 episodes, we hit a series of snags and bumps and all kinds of weird crap and are unable to give you a new episode this week. We will be back next week for sure. Today we're going to present you the first strange aeons radio with Vanessa as a full time member of the show. We look forward to entertaining you with our brand new episode of strange aeons radio next week. Thanks for listening.Dre strange aeons.Strange aeons radio, everybody. That's Eric Margaret over there.I'm Kelly young. And joining us hopefully very regularly is Vanessa Williams. Hi, Vanessa. So much pressure. Yeah, Leah right off the bat. Yeah. Hi.This isn't relaxed. This pressure. We're intense. I should have studied more. You are not only the first person first guests that we've asked back, but you are now going to be our regular co host. I hope I'm so proud. And I feel kind of bad for Tony.Sorry, Tony. We took me Tony was really at the bottom surprising.Okay. All right. That makes me feel I'm gonna like quite loud that over him and future. Good Regular. Tony's got a good regular podcasting. Yeah, he's city of geek, isn't he? Yeah, that's right. Okay. So it's really that you just couldn't get him. So you weren't with me.I was going on.Kinda like that. I'm happy to be here, you know, drove a good couple hours to ferry whatever, shakes. We love it. And I know that everybody listening will love it and got a lot to talk about. But I wanted to, I wanted to bring something up to you guys get your thoughts on it.Kevin Spacey, the accusations against him were dropped. Right, right. And I have two questions. The first is does he start light here for you? Does he come back from this? And be when he's in the courthouse and the judge drops all of this stuff? Does he limp out of the courthouse and then when he gets to the sidewalk, start walking normally, and then get hidden in a sea of humanity? I love it so much. If that doesn't happen,I'm gonna be really sad. Maybe you'll just imagine that happen because I won't have seen it.But it will have happened. Um, I you know, I feel like Kevin Spacey is almost untouchable. It's really a weird situation. So I lived in England for 10years. Kevin Spacey has been out there for a very long time. He's he revitalized the Old Vic Theatre. Everyone knows Kevin Spacey. Everybody knows where he hangs out. Everybody knows that he has sex with men in Hampstead Heath. This is a Hampstead Heath. So we people have known for a very long time, his sexual behavior, his sexual orientation. And it nothing stuck to him. So I'm almost not surprised that this is going to fall off again. I think he's gonna come back a might start off in Europe and then make its way back over here. Maybe he'll never come back over here. But I think that his career, he this isn't the end of what he does.Interesting. I kind of lean a little towards that same way that I think he'll probably figure his way back. And I mean,Mel Gibson has figured his way back and indie films. Yeah, exactly. In the strange films where he tends to play kind of to the type. Yeah, kind of plays assholes. He's like, remember that video? I can do it more. That's right. So and Kevin Spacey before it all started on set wise kind of had a reputation of being an asshole,an unusual thing. So it's kind of I think it's gonna take maybe a kind of like the some of the good boy things that have started percolate up where there's a producer and a director and an actor that all got into trouble. And it's like, well, let's work together to come back. Like, Oh, that'll be interesting to see how that works out. Well, did you guys see the season? Sorry, Netflix special? No, but I heard that he talked honestly and openly about his stuff, and that a lot of people were like, well, this is a very mature way to do this. It was genius. Even if it's just a publicity stunt. It was genius.I mean, like, what a way to make your self like acceptable to society and just show up just using a microphone and say I'm sorry. And and that was it was pretty powerful. It's really interesting to watch. I have no idea if he meant it. I have no idea if he's sincere, or if you change who knows. Kind of the opposite of that other comedian guy's name. I'm blanking on who had his show. Yes. starts with an L. Yeah.Louis C, K C.Hello, see Kalos Yeah, where he gave Louie CK CK who came back and his show was kind of the opposite of that his comeback was basically fuck all you. I don't care. I'm just gonna do my shit. And he's just thinking his battleship. Yeah, that did not work well for him that did not go for 116 your song? No, exactly like I think that you have to know how to play the fields. I think Aziz Ansari is going to be just fine. And I'm betting he's going to come back pretty strong. I think it's just how you approach it. I think some people are counting on the forget ability factor, which might be Kevin Spacey. He's moved, like, you all have forgotten this magical thing that happens. There was new controversy.I can see him making a comeback in Europe. I don't know as quickly as the world is changing here in the States. I think that this is not going to be allowed over here. I'm I'm fascinated to find out. I cannot I mean, I can't wait to find out. I I think it'll be really interesting to see what happens with people like Kevin Spacey.Yeah. And he sits on the edge. There are a few people that you know Weinstein's never gonna work again. There are people that are so far well, right.Yeah, you are definitely done. There's a monster. Yeah, yes. Then there are people that sort of sit in that middle picture? I don't know. Right, right. Like,I mean, it's, it's sad to say there's a sliding scale. It feels like there's a scale of like horrors of like, how awful they treated other human beings.Like we're on the scale that is and how much like repercussion they get, but I mean, but it also goes against the amount of fame they have, because look at Michael Jackson, like, how long is it taken? And are people still? I mean, are people gonna throw out their CDs? I know one person who said they did, but I don't know. He's still in heavy rotation on the radio. I think we let him get away with it.Because he's a damn good dancer.I can't you know it. I can't object to that. He was very playable in that video game did some sweet moves. It's also times you know, anything that stuff that happened but kind of ended before the Twitter and the Facebook and everything like that took over the world, Dad.Yeah, kind of get shoved aside when they deserve to or not, you know, it's like, oh, you're an asshole in the 80s. Whatever.Like, like Woody Allen and Roman Polanski are both kind of, it's like we already know. So no one's excited about it. No one really is, you know, fired up about it. They're like, Yeah, well, I've talked about my Woody Allen and Roman Polanski thing and the reason I can still watch their films is because most of the time they're not on screen.Woody is of course all the time. But if I don't have to look at them, like OJ Simpson, really screwed me for the Naked Gun movies. Yeah. And I Kevin Spacey is the lead and everything he's in and so it automatically I mean, if you watch baby driver, I know. He's on there with a very young, attractive boy. And I'm like, I wonder what went on on this set.And that shouldn't be what I'm thinking of when I'm watching a movie. Yeah. So that's a really good point. Some are easy like convention, Woody Allen. I never liked video. I didn't know he was a scam or anything like that. I just didn't like his style of film. Right. And I don't his style his way he talks the way he brought up. Why are you so anti semitic? I've been meaning to ask you about this. I mean,it's come up before but self loathing. That was the perfect answer.Yeah, I've definitely had that. That question still with Roman Polanski where I love his work. And the only, I don't know, I feel like this is something we're all going to have to tackle and figure out, you know, people's are versus their personality. And the only thing that I hold on to is that the person who he had a situation with actually said publicly that she forgave him. So kind of,it's hard because I'm like,Well, maybe she doesn't really and she's just saying that and she's actually super scarred or whatever. But it's like I'm almost holding on to that nugget. As I know, it's okay. I can totally like Rosemary's Baby, it's fine. On the other hand, I'm totally fine with victims forgiving their attackers and all that but it doesn't mean I then have to like the attacker can like okay, that's fine. I'm glad that you've gotten past it.I have serious feelings about a guy that does this to a 14 year old girl. That's really really important to say, I think that's a really, really valuable point.Anyway, let's start us off lightning. Hey,Harry. I feel like we owe it to the listeners to give them insight into some of these tough things like no one else is talking about. They've been waiting for somebody to break this right topic. Strange aeons radio is where you go for her.Hitting news and opinions.Well, okay, what have you guys been up to lately? I mean, we haven't spoken to you in a while. Vanessa, what's going on?Watching stuff? Liking stuff movies? I you know, I've been endlessly disappointed by a lot of films I've seen. So that's exciting. Thank you for asking.I have a list of films that I watched and I put a star next to the ones I like and like, I would actually purchase this. And that has been months. No stars lately. No stars. I mean,Spider Man was actually you know, it was fun. Yeah. For fun.I liked the into the spider verse more. Yeah, that is an amazing, amazing film. And I just forced a friend of mine to watch it after we went saw Spider Man. I was like, okay, but hold your horses. We got to find a red box right now. pull aside.Late Night Walgreens, we're doing this. Um, ya know, just been. I've been pretty busy.I've been editing a lot of video game trailers. So I haven't had as much time for movies as I would like. That's a good reason, though. Yeah. Did you guys see yesterday? No. I want to though. It looks so fun. We'd love to talk to and I had problems with it. I have problems with it. major problems with it. I thought it was a really cute premise that they completely misused. So it's like a great trailer that doesn't translate into a long form.It could have Yeah, yeah, it could have so I've noticed this with oh my gosh, what's the writers name? for weddings and Notting Hill. And I Richard Curtis. Love Actually Love Actually, um, he. The last film he wrote was about time. Yes.Which was equally problematic. I think. It also had very strange things going on in it with kind of dealing with supernatural elements, as well as drama, drama and comedy and romance. And I feel like that supernatural element is something he just doesn't tackle. Well, oh, that's kind of So um, yeah. So that's, I think that was where I was getting some hangups. But yeah, that was something I saw in the movie.Feel free if you want to really excited, but Well, I just thought that there were I mean, this was a, I guess, romantic comedy, but it didn't play the tropes correctly. And when you don't when you miss those beats, right, everybody notices, yes.So there's, there's a way to twist things so that you give people something new and fresh. But you still have to kind of know how this thing lays out.And I felt like, you know, if you haven't heard or seen this movie, seen or heard of this movie, it's about a guy who gets in a little accident bangs, his head wakes up. And he awakens in a world where the Beatles did not exist. And so he starts writing their music, but he knows Yes, he remembers it, and becomes a gigantic star because of this. But the Yeah, the stuff with the girlfriend, I know who's got a crush on him and all of this stuff. I was like, Well, this is not how this should be.He should have had the crush on her. He could be writing the songs for her, Oh my gosh, this is how it should have been. And then at the end, there needs to be a thing where he comes out and says, you know, I these are not my songs. But then writes his own song that everybody loves and proves that oh, you know what, I did have the ability to write songs.Instead, he comes out and says it and everyone's like, we don't care we love you know, repercussions.of awkward and they are like the the mood drops. And then then they're like, Yeah, nevermind.Yeah, please. Another. It's really visible, by the way gigantic spoilers for yesterday.Yeah, I mean, I'm not saying how anything ends or anything like, but I just, I did feel like at the end of the movie, I turned to my friend and I said, Well,XYZ should have happened. And she looked at me and said, Oh,my God, your rights. XYZ should have happened. That would have been the end of this movie.Well,enjoy.I'm looking forward to see I hope you go and see it and you love it. I want to be proven wrong, because that's what happened to me with love.Actually, I hated that movie. The first time I was a horrible. I was like, these people are horrible. We're coming in out of stupid pots.Like, I don't care about any of these people. And then now I watch it like four times a year.Christmas cry. I mean, I do love that movie. That's my Christmas movie. Four times a year. The uterus. That's the problem.I don't know that. That's okay.I'm making assumptions all over again. Take it back, Eric. Yes.What do you been watching? Let's see. I actually have no movies listed this week at all. Yeah.I did wrap up with Stranger Things.Excellent. Yeah. I've watched it. I have it all have you know Oh,I like it. Yeah. Should we pre spoiler alert? This one? Should we say ahead to people? Hey, we talked a little bit about it last episode. But you guys, you're here now, let us know, we'd love to hear another opinion. I don't know if I was emotionally in a bad place. But at the end when the person who has the thing happened to them happens to them, I was really mad. Really, really mad. And I was like, It can't end this way. You rewind right now, sir. And you bring this person back. Because no,the rest of it was great. I actually really enjoyed it. I think that going back to the town and staying in the town was a really smart idea. I love the tropes they brought in, I was constantly looking at the screen going. This is from Alien, this is from Back to the Future. This is from the thing this is from,I loved being able to see those moments and see that they weren't stealing so much as borrowing like, I felt like they were making these great nods.Well, you bring up a great point of what drives me. That's what people wrote, oh, they just stole this idea that there is such a thing as an homage. Yeah, where you reflectively look back on something you like, and recreate it in a new and fresh way. With still showing the studies had before. That's not ripping off. That's writing, right? Did you see Is it summer of 82?Yeah, so the thing I love about that movie is hitting that exact point you're talking about, you can't put a movie in a certain period of time and pretend certain things didn't happen. So summer of 84 really reminds us of remember that that time where everybody was terrified that kids were going to get kidnapped. That was like a big deal. That was a huge part of our childhood. There was the face on the milk carton actual faces, there was the book called face on the milk carton, like your your parents were telling you, you know, don't get in the cars, your it is important if you're going to if you're going to put a film in a period of time, that you make nods to the things that exist in that time. And I think that they do one step further of I think it's a positive thing by saying, You know what, and the thing does exist during this period. And it's amazing. And maybe these kids would or would not have seen it or loved it. And here's a little piece of it. Yeah, yeah, I agree. I thought it was the strongest season of Stranger Things. But you know, you needed those first two seasons to make it the strongest. I think you're100% Right. Yeah. I'm a little confused about the marketing. There was a lot of pre pre Stranger Things this new cowboy.Yeah, it was like What is all this what's going on? Like Baskin Robbins is redressed themselves. I'm like, I think you guys are preemptively trying to make some money here. And having seen the season and then looking at the merch after I'm like, still not still not a strong decision here, guys.Well, the too much merch. Yeah, the world? Well, that's where we're, that's where we're headed to I would imagine, almost to the point where you can download a movie as fast as you can think about it. They still got to pay their bills. So if they can't sell advertising, and they're no, they're not going to have400,000 copies of this on DVD that can sell for 40,000 if they're lucky. That's where you're gonna see the doctor, Dr. Pepper can get hit with spider pants. Well, totally. I did buy those Doritos with, like, gone out of my way every time like I'm getting a Spider Man lines. I'm curious. What is your thought on the homage versus rip off? I think that they've been well for talking Stranger Things in general, I think that they're very obvious with them. And when you do that, and you say, Look, we know you love this. We love it, too. That's a lot different than you know, usually you see a younger writer who comes in and all of a sudden you're you realize you're reading or watching the thing.Yeah, because they loved the thing. Totally. They don't want to come out and say this is this is what I wanted to do. Yeah. And I think that their version of a creature in this in this show was totally different, but the same, and I loved that like it was almost more grotesque in some ways, then the monster and I was just, that's hard to do.It's really hard to show up,carpenter. It was a cool monster. Yeah, I mean, that was pretty fucking cool. Yeah. It's disgusting. And I love the whole nod to the Body Snatchers and stuff like that. So I thought it was a legitimately creepy in scenes. You know, we talked about the bromance between Steve Harrington and Dustin. And you know, that's the the best Long Story series Yes, definitely.Man. It's so good. Well, actually, I would say, Alvin and whatever the girl's name is the redhead. They almost have like a really great chick man's garbage no fancy something. You know if there's a season for they could develop more. Oh, yeah. I'm there. Well, I'm pretty sure there'll be a season for considering the Yeah, yes. Thank goodness for that. Because I was really mad. And people were like, oh,seems like that's the end of Stranger Things. I was like no internet, you're wrong, not the ends. Well, there's the little Coda in the middle of the credits where they, they say not the American and that has to be,right.Only person, I think it could well then I've heard of two theories. So it could be somebody else. Yeah. It could be somebody who we've seen in prior seasons that we did not see. This isn't so good points, too. That's that would be less good. How about you? Any TV? You want to bring up? Well, I gotta say that the boys dropped off on Amazon not seen it. But I've heard I watched every single episode over the weekend. And I loved it. Oh, yay, halfway through with 444 through four.Which the fourth one is the one with the airplane? Yes. Which is right out of the comic book.Yes. They made a couple strange.W read the comic. That was gonna be my question and read the comic first or watch the show.First, we're not necessary to read the comic. it diverts a lot. But there are scenes from the comic that are in the show. And it doesn't matter because this is so well cast, that she acting is spectacular. You're just drawn right in as a person who loved the comic and watching something that's very little like the comic and loving it just as much. Yeah, that's awesome. Yeah, story wise, and plot point wise, it's very different. character wise, there's a lot of similarities.Yeah, the characters have forgot the name of the actor who's Judge Dredd, who was also in Star Trek. Urban. Yeah. So freaking underrated, man. She's so good. And he plays the lead guy. He's the lead of the boys. And he's perfect.Everybody here right. Everybody in that movie is cast just for that show his cast. And I'd heard some there. That's like the timing of it. Like the timing is really perfect in the situation we're in currently with superhero. Yeah, that's how I feel. I mean, the comic book came out kind of late 90s, early2000s Right after the big comic book, boom with image and all of that stuff. And it really just cut that down. And it's kind of coming at the same time when Marvel owns the industry. And they're they're making some really interesting statements. I think with this, the casting that really blew me away. I don't remember the actor's name but the guy who plays home lander is such a wonderful psychopath. Yeah. That I'm like,Wow, this this guy found the role of a lifetime. Yes. Oh,that's in the comic. The the lead character Huey is clearly supposed to be Simon Pegg. Simon Pegg is the artists had a picture. Yeah, Peg. Well, Simon Pegg is too old to play this, this character and so they cast him as this character's father. That was a really neat, Sony additional character but perfect idea. And he speaks with an American accent, which at first I was like, Is he being dubbed What is this? It's so odd to hear Him speaking in an American accent but yeah, that always throws me off. I'll never I'll never forgive Benedict Cumberbatch. On American accent anytime he does it. I'm like,You don't understand how much time you've lost immediately.Yes, he sounds really took me I did the same thing. So what's going on? Okay, he can't be what is he Scottish or Irish? I think he's a Scottish. Yeah. Yeah,it's it's actually interesting that you say that because I just finished season two of the runaways which I really didn't like, I am really unhappy with their take on have you guys read the comics at all. I read a little bit of the comics and I watched the first season and then the first episode of the new season and I was like, I I'm not sure I'm gonna continue with this. Well, yeah, because in the comics, like very quickly off the bat they lose their parents and become runaway us hence the name runaways. And I'm watching season one going, when are you guys gonna run away? Why are your parents still alive? Why are they all famous actors?Still going still breathe in?We're paying these people so let's get them some extra seats.Believe it I was like, Why is this so much about these parents? Who cares? Who cares anymore? Move on, but things like the boys or even umbrella academies. No. Reach i Yeah. We referenced preacher or you reference preacher and the boys were preacher did and the boys doing this a little bit.Rewinding what actually happened in the boys to help explain things a little better as the first season of preacher I don't know if he watched her read that I read it didn't watch it. The first season is great, but has nothing to do with the comics. It's just introducing you to the world. And then as the show goes on.I mean, that looks familiar. Oh, it's also perfectly cast preachers amazing, basically gas oil. And did you see that the boys developed by Seth Rogen and it was it really I hadn't seen Goldberg gas so the same guys that did preacher Wow, interesting. Sounds cool. You can you can tell. Yeah, they've got a real love for Darth stuff. Seth Rogen is doing things. I'm kind of shocked right now.Over the top comedies and oh,yeah, really bad comedies. Yeah, there's definitely humor, though and the boys and preacher but it's dark as hell for him, but that's highly recommended. Very, very good. Okay, I know what I'm doing when I get home. That's the only other thing I had written down as a note was Legion. Yeah, I'm still behind on it. But you know, I love that show. I just saw the first almost whole first episode.Season One. Oh, what did you think? Um, I was really excited by it. I think it's really interesting. It's visually soft on it. Yeah. Oh my god. It gets better. All this so good. Um,I'm a little like in the weeds still though. So I have no idea what's happening or why change anytime soon? Yeah. Okay, well, yeah, just get used to impromptu dance numbers and things like that just popping up. And then you're just kind of like, well, okay, this is the universe they live in is odd. reposit just gonna keep showing up. Oh, she is insane. Yeah, she said the whole series. Season three. So here's one of the main, the first season I thought was pretty good. Really interesting. The second season was gorgeous.I had no idea what the hell was going on. Anyway. And for some reason, this season, I feel like I could be completely wrong, too. Because I feel like I'm following along relatively well.So who knows? But is it just because we're so much inside this guy's head? And it's really hard to see what reality is.That's, that's the take. I'm going, Oh, it could also be this is the known last season. And maybe they thought, well, we got to wind this up. And we got to give people like there's because I can't use the word mutant. Because Marvel owns it now. I guess.Technically. Yeah. But I thought they totally did that. No legions part of the X Men, Ray,but they can't use any of that's how it was pitched to me was like, it's an X Men series, but it's good. And I was like, Cool. And I started watching it. I was like, what? Out? I was, I was excellent. I mean, it's not that it's bad at all. But it's it feels so different. Oh, yeah. It's way different. And there is sort of an excellent introduction. In season three. I don't know how far you've gone. How far behind you are. And I can tell I'm only like three or four episodes and it's one of the most beautiful shows I've ever seen show. TV.It's nice when you see something that gives shows like Mad Men a run for their money where you're like, you know what, I thought that was pretty wrong. total garbage pile.Actually, legions much prettier could it could have tried harder, guys. You failed.quick bit of trivia. The guy who plays the lead and legend. He played beast in the live action Beauty in the basement.Oh, wait, weird standing on those little weird stilt things. They were all of that stuff. And that's him under the makeup and everything is so weird. Huh? My brain hurts a little bit right now. Fantastic. With that in mind, then, how about we take a little break. Hey, where she leaves the girl this is gonna get as you may know the situation is critical. We have reached a maximum casualty level who exactly are you fate of our future could be more like the real term writer. But she could totally be terrible kid.I've heard of it. Yes. Yeah. Big flash. Yeah, that's kind of what surprised me It popped up. It hit all of Film Festival kind of people and stuff like that. And it did virtually no box office. It was a rundown the numbers here real quick. It's tomatoes ratings was90 from critics 77 crowd but only had like 3700 ratings. So there's very few ratings of it.77 audience? So there's a group of people out there, let's say33% of the people who rated this movie. Yeah, who said this is not a good movie. For whatever reason. I find that very odd because I thought this was a huge audience. Hey, yeah, solace, assholes. Part that surprised me a little bit. Not they didn't do any box office.Did you like 50,000? box office? But I think it's because they're showing maybe 10 theaters, right? It's budget was $60,000.Oh my god. Wait. Yeah, I looked that up. I watched the film on Hello, fuck is still 1000 alone,or $60,000.02 or three? Sources had it at 60,000. So I don't know if they just brilliantly marketed it. Sort of like Roberto Rodriguez. 77,000 movie actually cost like $210,000 By the time we saw in the theater, because of all the color and sound fixing they did. So I don't know if maybe this is60,000 production. And they did some crazy stuff and post but Yeah. How's it surprised by that too? Yeah. The more I watched the more is gone. I remember monsters lying really low budget to and being like it's true.As directed by three people Francoise. Some ARD is where I have fun. My favorite part of the show. And bring us into French let's write a new carousel. Yan Karl Carl was sell. These are three.Director writer directors who worked there were some of ad for you mentioned earlier was one of their films. And almost everything they've done. They've co Written and directed. So are they there? It sounds like they're French. Are they French? So they just really love American culture. And they're like, hey, 80s America.Hey, future America. I didn't even think about that. That's a good point. Yeah, they have latched on to that 80s vibe.Maybe? Maybe in France, all of our 80s movies are finally getting over there right now.Well, they weren't huge fans of Jerry Lewis in the 90s. Wait, these filmmakers are France in general? France in general? Yes.Now, I've been guessing in the90s. These filmmakers were very young. But the French love them, or at least they did for a period in the 90s when America no longer cared about them. They seem to pick them up and go. We should care for you. Your head. No, no, this happened. I'm kind of fascinated that anybody was obsessed with Jerry Lewis.Passed like 65 Exactly. So stars Monroe chambers, who, whose history is largely TV did like155 episodes of Degrassi. Wow,that's a great show. The new next generation, I don't know if that's still great. It's better.Okay.Even better.I've not seen very much of Degrassi but what I've seen of the people who showed me were very passionate about it. I have heard that yes, and Canadian I mean, Canadian kids soap opera, you can't go wrong. And that's where Saved by the Bell done with quality thing and storylines. That's where Drake came right now.Hey, I've seen all the Saved by the Bell. I make no jet was pretty upsetting Lawrence lebouf and of course Michael Ironside is the name they got to sell the movie, I'm guessing say didn't pay him anything? Is that a good like one? Isn't it a fair amount? So yeah, maybe not. Because he didn't pay anybody else anything and he has he got every dollar, five days a week. Everybody brings in their childhood toys and buckets of paint. Like we're gonna make this thing come hell or high water desert some property that's abandoned? Where we that that'd be an interesting one to check because it's it doesn't feel like it was shot in France, that's for sure. Now pretty sure it's shot in the US. It's gotta be in the US. It looks like like Napoleon Dynamite was done in what like Ohio or something. I know, Idaho. Even better. It's like, Yeah, we were to Idaho. To some dudes farm who did? He doesn't wake up that early. So he's already by the time we're shooting. He didn't care what we did. Totally go with it. That's a so the storyline basically is a post apocalyptic wasteland in1997.The main guy is a comic book fan who turbo man is his favorite comic book and he still manages to read and collect those and he's basically just trying to survive in the US and of course being at base kind of with a lot of 80s ideas. His main course of transportation is a BMX bike even had a little Molesley going up a mix bike even had the little post and that guard thing to put in the little padded thing that you put in the crossbar wow, I guess I was I remember this into the BMX culture that much Oh, I didn't realize I was a nut guard. Yes,it's an important addition it really didn't do jack shit was that guard I mean was that what it was called? Probably not what it was it was just like the thing that's on the bike every bike had on it was like a wraparound pad put around and velcro yeah you velcro crossbar.Yeah, all right, even the road bikes jump off and bam. And you get no protection whatsoever from see let's see here. What a thing I remember because this was at least my second watching of it the crazy level of blood and violence they have in this film like I kind of shot in about that but you're right like fight scenes. Yes. Etc. Just like K punches people in their heads explode and he blows people up and half the body lands on one guy's head the other half of Atlanta another guy's had pure fun and craziness a lot of images like returnable stranger things it says of there's a bunch of them. But there's a ridiculously obvious Big Trouble in Little China with one of the guys who goes after him wearing that same kind of hat. The three guys were in big trouble. Oh,they did a neat thing with the music where a lot of times it's easy and Stranger Things you can put real songs if it had our journey or something and this might have been a little weird, but they get nice at sounding music that doesn't feel like it was just stolen from an 80s movie. They went to like audio jungle and there you go. Yes.Since me Of course the lead not the lead but the HERO MAN the manly man who's supposed to say like he's going to feels like he's going to be protecting them has an Australian accent today. Curtsy does it all make sense? Yeah, I mean it's almost Tokyo Gore police level of violence at times research aerial spray.Like, this almost seems out of character for this. It's weird because like every time I think back on turbocad All I think is like bubblegum and like candy and you know, just popping colors, cotton style. And you know, lots of like, almost glittery. A lot of that comes from just one character from the lady there. The robot lady embodies all of that so enthusiastically. And what I think her performance is so great, because for the first 510minutes, you almost kind of want to Oh, awesome away, but then she becomes unbelievable, lovable and wonderful. It's like okay, yeah, be nice to this person, man. Stop being me.Exactly. It's like, you know what things are that bad? Take it out her it's not her fault.Yeah, I guess what I liked about this movie and I always wanted to do a movie like this. I always wanted to set a movie in the distant future of the year2000 and make it something that you would have seen in 1985 or six, you know, Mad Max type feeling movie? Do they do they say or specify what the Apocalypse was? Or are we just led to believe it's nuclear war because in the ADSs foot what it all means? I gotta remember and saying anything specifically is all about you know, it's always the quest for water. Right? And so there's the area you don't go to because it's kills you. They don't I don't remember them saying as radiated or anything like that.So right I mean, I guess this could have been shot anywhere. But you mentioned the guy with the Australian accent and that's where it looks like it was shot.Yeah, it looks like it's either some deep desert part of the US or Australia. Yeah, we got or just regular Australia. Yeah, exactly. It could have shot in Australia just take you know what drive for 15 minutes away from the coast and you're good.Exactly. Go outside the airport and don't point the camera that way. I saw a map that was all the roads in the world lit up from space. Oh, Australia's Got a Yeah, Y shaped road in the middle of the country is like nothing else.there be dragons. That's right.Slash kangaroos. solid choice.Where did you watch this? How did you watch this? Is this? This is on? Yeah, Netflix. It's on? No things Amazon. Oh, good.Okay, let's see if I can find some options. I hope you're editing all of this part out Eric. Sometimes I do sometimes. We're amusing. Currently, we're not being so amusing. Now. It's true. Now. Now I'm sorry, I asked the question. But I've got this awesome app called just watch where you put in the type thing and it'll tell you all the formats you can watch it Oh,that's so cool. Yeah, fascinating. Prime Video. Some people might like to know that you can watch this on Amazon Prime.Advertising Google Play. Yeah,no, PlayStation and whatever the hell Microsoft basically no one's making money off of this movie. This has not been for quite a long time. That $60,000might not have made that budget right Eric I'm tired of your bullshit and good so I want to hear what you chose next.Well, I chose kind of a little known movie but it's it's amazing I saw it in movie theaters it's called the rover thinks a long time ago this man your friend told me when your brother is a long South long way from the left you to die he didn't even start talking to me about in this day and age no harm gone. Don't see me come down and hang them identity on now as an anomaly.Either of you guys have seen this guy I have. I have not. But when told me more I mentioned this I looked it up on I see it's on Netflix. It is. And I was like, God, damn, I've never heard of this movie. And I want to watch it. It was hidden. It was super hidden in there. Some people lovingly call it sad Max,rather than Mad Max. It's sent it's set in some future, or current day Australian location where something has happened in the world. They're not very specific about what it is. So I kind of feel like I'm cheating when I'm using this film. It can't just be Australia,Australia today. I don't know I haven't been there. Maybe they got hit a little bit harder by the housing crisis than we realized. But it is. They do mention that it's like a financial collapse is part of it. So we're following this man who is sad or angry, or somewhere in between. He's guy Paris. We're following guy Pierce being guy, Piers. And at the beginning, we see him pull over go into a bar and start drinking and behind him in a window. A car flips over and just as dramatic kind of a crash. And so he's just drinking the people in the bar like run out to see what's going on.Meanwhile, basically 40 to 3d to rob some place are hustling out of their car into his car and steal it. And the whole rest of the film is him trying to get his car back. It's like so familiar. Yeah, it's like the Terminator. A big plot point involving the trunk. Yes. Okay.Yes. Yes. It's very good. Yeah,it's very good. It's actually kind of neat, in that the people who are involved in it are a small team that have oddly been on a lot of things together as part of the production team. So it's written by it's written by Joel Edgerton. Oh, wow. It was originally intended for Nash Edgerton his brother to direct he. He's a Hollywood stunt man. Now now him and then the director David mish Nishad the only one it's more I can't read my handwriting. So I have that problem. Yes. So they have worked together on a lot of different projects. But Joel Edgerton, you guys might remember from the gifts he did,Jane got a gun and boy, boy race, which he also started. Oh,wow. And then David, row Animal Kingdom and catch 22 A lot of episodes for that. But he was directing this, this picture. And then I actually found out about this little team of people from back when I was working indieflix and had to watch a zillion terrible short films. There were a pack of two or three that were really really good. One was called Spider one was called bear and I can't remember the other one. They were amazing. Yeah. And then I found out about the rover, which is basically like coming together, they finally made a feature. Oh, it's so good. So yeah, like the three guys in Australia that actually make movies. But yeah, there's there's kind of this whole thing about why is this man is so obsessed with going after an old beat up car. And he's literally just tearing his way through this Australian destroyed landscape with all these crazy characters you have, like this old lady who runs a brothel who's constantly saying, my darling, what are you? Can I can I give you a young boy, my darling. Such an amazing, I didn't mention the other major star of this film. Oh, yeah, you're right. I almost left him out. Robert Pattinson in probably the first time I ever saw him on on screen and he does an incredible job. He plays one of the robbers that got left behind. And so in guy Pierce is tearing through the landscape he comes across this guy who had been basically abandoned by his friends slash family by his brother has a horrible gunshot wounds. And Robert Pattinson is also a little bit I, I won't say mentally disabled. But I don't know if that's the right word. It's hard to I don't, I don't know what the thing that you would say at this point is but he's, he's a little bit naive about the world. And he is focused on strange things. And he just does an amazing performance, he blows it out of the water. And there's this really great moment, Partway into the film where he sings a pop song, don't hate me, because I'm beautiful.Great, I don't know if that's the only song they managed to get, or what happened. But it's so perfect. And he's kind of mumbling along to it. It's so beautiful. And the film is kind of about it. The the director said it was about anger. But I disagree. I think it's much more about value. And like how the idea that like money has changed value, the Australian dollar isn't worth anything and get the American dollar might be worth something. But the Chinese dollar seems to be worth something. And there's this weird economic struggle. And then there's the value of life, where life is pretty much valueless. Unless you care about something into the world and deep in the media and movies very well. Nice film studies person, I can tell that I'm sorry. Sorry. But um, yeah, so it actually got a surprisingly66% Rotten Tomatoes on perform on from the critics and 51%audience, which is insane to me,because it's a really beautiful little film, knowing now what we know about Rotten Tomatoes and the way the ratings went, I wonder how much of that at least for the fan side, it's just people hating on it, because it's our patents and either way, that's such a good point.Because like there's nothing wrong with this movie. It's actually just it's a really incredible film for for what they did. They spent more on it than I thought they did. They spent 8.5 million. Wow. Yeah. And they opening weekend they got 69,000. Big, they grossed1.1 million. Ouch. Yeah. Yep. So it didn't come out. This came out in 2014. But I don't know when Twilight came out, I'm happy to say but I wonder 10Yeah, I really like Robert Pattinson. He's done great. I do now I think he's, weirdly when I was at film school, one of my teachers had auditioned him for a feature. And it turned him down because he said he was terrible. And he's like, as Robert Pattinson. His career blew up. He went back to the audition tape to watch it again. He's like, No, he was still really bad. So I think that Robert Henson's abilities and talents have really grown through through just grinding through projects, starting with das Twilight Prior to that he was in one of the Harry Potter movies. Come on. Cedric, somebody or another heartthrob, I just thought it was interesting after that. I mean, Twilight, of course made him a gazillionaire and a national treasure. And a sex symbol. Yes. And but then I don't work, man. I don't remember the other vam or the Werewolf Boy in that right?never actually seen the movies, but you cannot know her about everything. Yeah, Taylor. But I thought it was interesting that when those movies ended,Taylor went right into a series of very bad action films, and we don't know anything about it.And Robert then went into a bunch of small indie movies, and he's been getting better and better and is going to be the lead. Woman. I forgot. Kristin for surge. Yeah, she did the same thing. She went into a really strange, super low budget. Yeah. And she she really is kind of like a one note,Jake, but the projects that you can put her in, you can totally blow the film out of the water by being just awesome. If you give her the right character or the right No, yeah, you can't you can't make that girl happy. She's she's never gonna be fun. She's never gonna have a good time. She's not the girl next door. Stop trying. Don't kidding. Well, so pattens is going to be the new Batman two.Yeah, so that'll be interesting.Oh my a lot of uproar over that.I love watching the upward because I can't think of damn near any casting choices that have been involved in the Marvel world where everybody was horrible. The world's coming to a goddamn and you can't cast this person. Then you see the movie go? Oh, good. Pretty good.Yeah, I'm a little worried about not only foreign. For me. I read some of the code I'd have no idea if they even remotely gonna follow the Thor, comic or comic. I was okay. She was actually just Thor. But mine here is already a person you know, just she was feeling or she just got just for first started the comics he had he was the doctor something that stick that he did on the ground? Yeah, they sort of went back to that idea where it's more of a person that becomes a Norscot as opposed to or a god as opposed to a God who pretends to be a person. Yeah, but Thor's already like that whole thing was seven.Or the hammer hammer then like Beta Ray Bill, I don't want to be too geeky on you guys. Beta Ray Bill when he held the hammer. He did not become Thor.He became the god version of Beta Ray Bill so soon she just become the guy with I mean, I'm totally fine with it. But as a person, I'd be like, Oh, I'm not gonna just name myself Thor. That's already somebody. Well, that's why the comic did sort of work. Gender swap can be great. But then the whole story is she Yeah, and it didn't really Yeah,I mentioned you felt like it didn't go super far. Yeah, it's like, well, we're gonna have a female Thor. Why? Yeah, good question. It's great to have that out later. Cool. Have a female Thor. But can we give her a good story? Instead of just being a female Thor and kind of a weak Thor story? Alright, you nerds? Can we get back? Yeah, definitely. Absolutely. So I would say I would totally recommend if anyone hasn't seen the rover, check it out. But more importantly, before watching the rover, if you haven't seen Mad Max, check that out. Because they're both Australian movies basically about revenge about men who've been torn down by the new world that they've entered into. They're both one I guess Mad Max is more about how he became the man he was. And this is much more about who is this man? And how did he become who he was? So the question is posed on I like opposite ends. It's good. Don't let anyone spoil it for you. So it like we just did. No, no, we haven't. So I can't wait to watch it. When I saw that. It was on Netflix. I put it on my queue immediately. I got it from the library, because I didn't like you said I didn't even know was on Netflix. And so I was like, Oh, I gotta get this movie. And I should pay for it.But I'm not going to yet. And then I kind of ran out of some time. So I needed to watch it in various other locations, and photos on Netflix so I could fit in all locations in all locations all the time. Just watch get the app now.You know, when you put it in Google the same thing. But I like apps.Who's good, who's gonna fault you? Apps are just lovely. Thanks so much for telling us.Don't let it alright, smartass aside, what did you just watch if you want to pay us for any of this stuff?Okay, well, originally I thought I'd be kind of clever and choose the movie high rise. Have you guys seen that one? I love that. And there's it's such a weird thing because something has happened and it all just takes place in a in a apartment complex. But I decided instead to go with a little movie from2002 called reign of fire a creature has been awakened that has lain dormant for millions of years.A species older than the dinosaurs, and more terrifying than anything we could have imagined. No one will protect them. We have to hang on once again. And one will lead them. There's nothing magical about it.They're made of flesh and blood. You take out their heart, you bring down the beach where they started in London.Vertical 100 yards closing fast Arsenal has been assembled, you're ready to rock and roll to take back Matthew McConaughey Christian Bale reign of fire good decision. How would you know you've never seen it?I haven't seen it either.Largely because and I think this will be your point. It when it came out. It was rated and still is rated? Well, I didn't realize you haven't seen it. So okay, so all the shit you are giving me about it is based on other people's opinions? No, no, it's based on your your smartass comments. Well, we only pick weird abstract ones that nobody's heard of, as opposed to this giant blockbuster release that everybody hated. So I can't fall, we would have kicked you out if you'd taken. So rapidfire The Rotten Tomatoes score from the critics is a measly 42% whereas the audience gives it a measly 49%.It had a box,a budget of $60 million.A box office of $82 million. So you know, just right there. Rob Bowman was the director. He's done a ton of genre television. He also directed a little movie called electro which you know and love Eric, your favorite.Oh, my goodness. Never seen it.Crazy.How? Listen to this cast, though. You guys. Christian Bale. Okay. Matthew McConaughey,Gerard Butler, and Isabella scopo. That was written by a ton of writers.Probably problem right there.Yeah, I mean, more quality was put in every new person was just adding to it. The only name and the last name on that is Matt Greenberg. He's the only one you recognize. He wrote the movies1408 Oh, and the new pet cemetery, which I thought was a massive pile of shit. I kind of like 1408. But I didn't bother the pet cemetery in mind that that's because John Cusack makes you like every movie. It's not a very good movie. So this one is kind of cool, because it's about these construction workers who awaken a dragon in this gigantic construction site as you do. And this Dragon comes up blasts everything and then through the credit sequence. We see a ton of newspapers that basically say that, you know, what are we seeing? And we see did they spend the newspaper spend? They did not do that. Do they fade in and fade out? Yes. Well, the credits are going on. And and it's basically we're seeing the world and because more and more dragons are showing up and they're burning everything. I love that. That sounds amazing.Well, the whole thing is this movie sounds amazing. And it's really dumb. But it's super entertaining. Oh, and Matthew McConaughey. He he fucking axes ass.Tears up the scenery. He's bald with a big bushy beard. And he's basically a futuristic dragon slayer. I think they see like a wizard or so after they've taken over the world, we flash forward 20years. Christian Bale and Dr.Butler have put together this small community in Ireland and that's where most of the film takes place is in Ireland. And they've taken over a castle of course, and they've got all these survivors there most notably a ton of children. They're trying to the other community that basically just stays out of the Dragons way.The Dragons burn everything and then they eat the ash. This is how they are sustaining themselves. They don't actually even care about humans, wow, they just want to burn the world and then they eat the ash. So makhana he shows up. He's an American soldier who's leading a group of American soldiers and he claims to have killed a dragon. And it says, I'm going to need more soldiers. So because we're going after him on children getting the car, we're going after the main Dragon, and he basically says, We've figured it all out.All the dragons you see are females. There's one male Dragon, we kill the one male dragon and the rest will die. It's like a vampire story. That was kinda Yeah. And the whole thing is that Connie's way of killing a dragon involves taking a helicopter into the air and then shooting these these paratroopers out or like stunt paratroopers who shoot after the dragon what? It's, it's fucking amazing. It looks amazing. It's just missing the rock. Yes, this would have been a rocker dragon. And then of course, things go awry, as they always do no plans and Christian Bale, who is basically a pacifist has to join these dragon slayers. And it gets a little silly, I guess. Bale as you know, is a bit of a a widow actor. Yeah. So he had lost a ton of weight because you wanted to look like a guy who had been starving.Wait a second, it gets better. He shows up on set and sees that Matthew McConaughey has bolt up.And they have a fight scene and he was like, fuck, I'm not going to like a 90 pound weakling against this guy that looks like the Hulk now. I'm Akana. He is a method actor and required everyone on set to call him by his character name. Even if you met him, say in the restaurant or the grocery store and you are not working. You had to refer to him by his characters.Or that about him. He's filling in.I think that we can look at everything he's done since then. And go yes, this man is crazy.kind of freaking terrifying. I love makhani so much. And the fact that he's insane just makes me love him. Batman, I just, I hope he does dress because if that's just who he is, as a human, I'm kind of worried. I think that he's got worried that Warlock and wizard blood in him and Tiger's blood or whatever that is, I think he's legitimately insane. I read a interview with Esquire or something like that with him, where the reporter went down and stayed for like three or four days and wrote this amazing article about him. And he sounds like somebody that that would be so much fun to do with for three or four days. And then get the fuck away. You're gonna die. He's gonna die. Right? I'm fairly convinced. I mean, we talked a little bit about actors, writers and how they might get a script and Tom Cruise. Clearly if you write a motorcycle scene and a running scene in, he's in there. I'm fairly certain with McConaughey they say well, I mean, there's a scene where you wear puka shells. All that all?Your hair? I'm gonna have to do tips. Are you ready? Well, he did a series of movies like mud and a couple other ones. That work just so incredible. Yeah, well, he just did a indie film that sounded amazing where he played like a burnout hippie who kind of getting screwed over by the world or something. I don't know. His character.Yeah. Oh, gosh. It sounded amazing. Well, the dragons in this look fucking amazing. Now I haven't seen Game of Thrones. These things are the coolest dragons you've seen since since the Varma Thrax pejorative and old Slayer. That's right. I said I had a hard time for geeks.Whatever.So that's, that's super cool. And it is pretty cool to see a dragon fighting a military helicopter. There is a bit of confusion when you realize that they're fighting these fire breathing dragons with fire and I'm kind of like, I feel like this is the one thing that is probably not a problem for them. But it appears to be in this film.So are they fighting him with like, are they actually spraying fire at them? Are they spraying bullets at them? Well, they've got bullets but the whole thing is they got to get something into this dragon's mouth to blow it up.Okay, you haven't made this clear? I don't want to make it here. I want you to watch this movie. I want you to give it a chance and go fuck that was actually pretty damn fun. Well, the cast members alone kind of make me go. Oh, well. Yeah. All right. Also consider this and2002 makhana he was the name Gerard Butler had done nothing. And Christian Bale hadn't been baptized so makhana which is the the selling point of this film back then which is really interesting to watch this and then go wow, there's three gigantic action stars in this and you know makhana he is kind of the least of them. Wow. The Fast and the Furious take Andre.Anyway, yeah, I love the movie.Still.Not sure I can say it's a great movie, but boy, is it fun. It looks really cool. They've got a really bad you know that I like Monster vision. But they've got a really chintzy version of it in this I'm like What? What happened here you guys this is literally just an effect you put over the footage you shot. Why is this look so shitty? Oh, we need we need a shot from the dragon. What do you got? I got this filter, go with it.It's not a good film, but it's a super enjoyable film. I think so. Yeah, I mean, a lot of times when we do this, so give you guys a little peek behind the curtain so you can see how the I've seen I don't know no other fudge is packed as I like to say, oh dear, and I will pick a movie and then I'll watch it and if I've seen it before, I just kind of skim it. Well, I sat down to watch this and I watched the entire thing made myself up frozen pizza and enjoyed the fuck out of this. That sounds like the perfect night. Frozen pizza and a dragon movie starring Matthew McConaughey.Yeah, I can't imagine a better way to go. I will tell you how I was dressed because it was very hot.I'm guessing the dragon visuals. Were not helping with that.Slay this dragon in that room.Anyway. So that was my pick. And that was all of our picks.Normally, Vanessa, I would say Hey, since you're new, you get to pick the next genre. But it's my turn, sir. So I get to pick the next genre. And next time we'll let you pick it. Okay, but that's fair. More my next sub genre I am picking time travel as our movies and travel. That's a huge range. Yeah, that's right there. Are you are you going to say don't pick certain ones anything on your list? Let's just say the Time Machine is probably out. Not even that fun to watch anyway. Doesn't the Guy Pearce? One. I actually never saw Star Trek for dad. It's bad.Yeah, no Star Trek for us.Oh, that would have been the perfect one.I'm actually wearing a star.Anyway, for sure. Thanks, everybody listening.
