Oh, sorry, did I break your concentration? Somewhere between science and superstition? sites to show you Strange Aeons. Welcome Strange Aeons radio. That's Eric over there. Hey, look, that's been s over there. Hello. I'm Kelly. I have more news on the neighbor saga. Oh my god, I need to know. Nice. Vanessa was, uh, you telling me that there might be a power struggle going on that had nothing to do with me was that you put that in mind. Okay. So you guys know that come up here. And sometimes there's like laundry detergent outside of their door and stuff like that. And they just left it out there for a couple of weeks. So finally, I was gonna throw it away. And then I saw Oh, there's still stuff in here. So I put it directly in front of their door. Oh, sure. And there, it sat for another week and a half, they would open their door, walk over it, and leave it there. And I was like, okay, so you know, that was a passive aggressive thing of me to do. But this seemed like it was also super passive aggressive, like, Fuck you, Kelly. You don't get to tell somebody else doing laundry here. And it wasn't them at all? Well, no, because then they did laundry, and left this stuff right there in front of their door. And I was like, What is going on here? And then I thought it was even asked, but somebody put it in my head. They're like, there may be a power struggle going on that has nothing to do with you, like between them. Because it's, you know, a guy and a girl. And I was like, Oh, I didn't even think of that. But regardless of that, you have come up and seen like stuff on that little shelf out there of garbage. VCRs I had to clean up a pick up a used mask that was there. Like, what the fuck, man. So I come out of the house yesterday, got on my door here and I see sitting on that bench thing. A empty carton of milk. So I grab it. And as I'm heading down, I get down to the bottom of the stairs. I open the door and he's coming in. So I just handed him the book. And I said, Hey, man, what's going on here? Why am I cleaning up your garbage? And he was he was very apologetic and and he seemed kind of stressed and everything and he said I'm sorry, man. When the cops came last night, they basically told me to just leave that there. And I didn't want to get into it. But he said they didn't they didn't do anything. And he said, okay, you know, that's fine. Except I don't care a be the laundry detergent has been sitting there for two weeks. So I'm not sure what the excuses for that. He said, Well, I'll get it. I'll get a tidy up. You know, they took they took my girlfriend away last night and all this stuff. And so apparently she was beating on him, I guess and she got shut up. Oh my god. That's just the worst part. I mean, I had been drinking a lot that night. But I heard none of this as I was just out apparently. How did you not know there were cops arresting somebody in your building. The only the only thing I touched in your defense is there is a long distance you've got such a narrow long place that from their place to your bedroom. Like if you'd gone to bed. I big chunk a space. That's true. But as we know sound travels strangely I can hear him drilling. No problem. I thought I'd her a fight but I didn't choose. Anyway, when you guys came in today, the car out there was running and he was in it. And he goes out and sits in his car a lot. But he's been there since this morning. And I might have to go and tap on the window and make sure he's alive. You might have to edit all this out if it turns out he's dead. Oh, geez. It's hard. Like I mean, you forget that people have their own huge inner struggles going on. And God knows what that that is going on in that apartment. That's true. Is he drilling in the middle of the night because somebody is telling him like, you know, he's worthless and if he doesn't finish this thing, you know, or is it that he's like, really on drugs are we who knows what's going on? It's just it's Heartbreaker weird. Yeah, but you know what? You know who's going through a lot of shit and their neighbors don't have to deal with this guy right here. Right here. That's exactly right. Yeah, cuz that's how I was raised. Yep. No, same. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Like I don't think excuses are good. It's just interest. I mean, it's nice to think about that. Everyone's got shit. I don't think your shit should ever overlap on somebody else's plate. There you go. Michael bronzer that was for you. Because he had reached out and told me about some weird neighbors. He had armed conflict. So I said, Oh, stay tuned. More, can you find out? Is there a way to find out like from like a police info board? or? Yeah. I'm sure there's some kind of police board that was you know, they won't say names or anything. But it'll say you know, such and such arrested for domestic abuse or whatever. So, yeah, and you know, I'm planning on moving and it's just like, I didn't want to make a make a big thing just before I moved. Because I felt like, well, what is that gonna do? That's just gonna stress everybody out. But, but he opened the door and I was holding his and it just kind of just kind of all came out. I'm glad that you talked to him, though. Because I think that's the you could go years thinking, you know, what's going on with somebody, right? And then having that even a little bit cleared up is really, it's nice, I guess. I mean, I look at it all as story fodder. So I sit at the bar, and I'm like, I want to hear about my fucking neighbors today. Well, weird shit. live in the dorms. One time I woke up to the sound of a unpleasant story of somebody screaming as they fell past my window. I was on the ninth floor. Oh my god. And so me and my roommate Lee at the time we got up and we're like, looking out side. And you could hear her rather unpleasant noise. But she lived. She managed to land a couple inches from a sprinkler and a couple inches from the cement sidewalk. Oh, my God. And live she didn't. The End story wasn't that was that she just fell. Okay, she's sitting in her window and just fell. She's fell out of her window. What floor? Was she on? At least there was 12 total. And so you know, you never know what your neighbors are up to until they go right past your window so well, so let's not discount the fact that these neighbors I'm talking about are living in the apartment where the guy died. No, that's true. So guy died. Yeah. Bad Mojo. Yeah. So there might be something going on in the possession. Yeah. Hey, story fodder. Like you go, yeah, the guy died in there. And I was the one who made the call because the place was starting to smell. And I was like, I don't know what's going on here. But probably somebody should check on this guy. He's there for a while. Yes, he was he had liquefy. You got to liquefied naper degree degrees outside. You know what this place is like when it's 90 outside? 140 in here and so yes. In the in the hot summer sun. I always hear about these stories, but never like directly. Yeah. Wow. That's a lot to take in. Yeah, so happy. Happy Sunday. Happy Thursday. Happy Wednesday. Wouldn't be funny if you do have to edit this entire story. Go down there and knock on the window and Lisa to take care of it. No. No, my God. I would like to think that, you know, not sadness, just naturally would have taken him. It's not that he did anything about it. You know? Yeah. Well, he just got real sad. Well, that makes him a broken heart. Yeah, such a happy better that way. It's more of a fairy tale version. Vanessa, I very rarely read current comic books. But I am reading the last Ronen are you? Oh, yes. I have not been reading although we know about it because I think there was a Kickstarter for this. Oh, really? I don't think so. It's coming out month by month right now. Okay, and it's on issue. Two or three isn't the canneries thing? No, no, this is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the future. Only one of them left. Oh, and he is out to avenge the death of his brother's wife super. It's really good. How are the two of us reading it? I literally went to a comic book store yesterday and they were like, totally like shut down COVID style and they were opening one day a week for three hours. And they just had bundles and about two bundles of other Ninja Turtles comics I hadn't come across. But not is that a get on this because the coolest part of this, Eastman and Laird doing it together? No. Got the story. And Eric, you know, there's like two pages in there that are clearly just his art, where it's a flashback. Oh, my God was like, oh, how cool. Then, it's just nice to know that Laird is involved again. Yeah, but I mean, like, it's always sad when you watch the documentaries. And it's like, and then they're broke up. Yeah. What is it? Eastman, who is really involved in the series? The Nickelodeon series? Yeah, yeah. Heavy Metal. He did a lot. Yeah, a lot of stuff. So what issue are they on? How far do I have to get totally to issues right? Oh, thank God. They're big, too. So it's just a very cool story. All right. I'm going to comic shop. Holy cannoli. We got the comic shop. Right. Exactly. I'm gonna go right there. I'm not even kidding. I cannot get behind on this stuff. Because I'll never find it. That's what happened with like, Wonder Woman dead earth or whatever. Right. I had to like specially hunt down issue. I think the re You're such a bitch. That was a cool series. It was good. Yeah. I noticed you put your computer away. But you're next. Yeah. But have you been watching? That's a great question. breaking out the hand computer instead? Yeah, the hand computer will let me know. Um, so I checked out a couple of these sort of action films that have been popping up on different on different streaming services. So I saw Tom Clancy's without remorse. Oh, is that good? Yeah. So the Amazon Amazon series does look good. It's setting something up clearly. Does that really filming setting something up? The series they did with? What's his name from the office? Right. So that was really good. I enjoyed that show. Okay, so that's cool. This is just a movie or is it a it's a movie? Yeah, it's a movie. It sets up a character who was in the military and involved in something that went tits up as it were. All of a sudden Russians were involved and turns out he was being lied to about all kinds of things and those in the Middle East and anyway, complete its mission goes home. And then of course, the Russians seemingly are taking revenge. And everybody in his unit is being killed off. But they don't get him. They get his eight month pregnant wife. Your immediate dead baby. Yeah, so then you get to watch him out for out for revenge and just incredible acting by. I'm forgetting his name. Michael B. Jordan. I was just gonna say he was in Black Panther. Right? That guy in Black Panther. I love Michael B. Jordan. He's amazing. And he's gorgeous, gorgeous, man. And yeah, it was fun. I'm really looking forward to seeing where they go with this. But it definitely felt like a it's a tom clancy joint. I mean, it's total. Anytime you've seen that Tom Clancy made into movie it's Yeah, that cool. That's when that on the list? Yeah. Oh, the one I watched was decidedly different than that. The arrow streaming service continues to deliver from called Chioma from 1976. The probably the biggest claim to fame to it is have Franco Nero in it. Who is in Django. Here's the original Django. Holy shit. This movie is funny. Oh my god, it is such a that could be Clint Eastwood playing that role kind of movie and has really he plays a character who's the as the 70s movie call him half breed. So he's a very, very, very blue eyed, half native white guy, so it's not the greatest casting. But you can tell because he has long hair. So that must be clear. But he Holy shit. I don't know if you've seen Franco Nero movies. I know I've seen one. But I can't remember he is on screen presence of power. Yeah, really good. And they've got great shootouts and family drama and problems with the because he's an adopted kid. And the dad seems to like the adopted kid or the other three sons. So they've got problems. And him and his dad are like the best shots in the area. And it's just fun and nails it and I liked it enough that I'd never seen Django summit. And that's also on our right now says, Let's watch Django. I like Chioma a lot more. I've never even heard of it. Yeah, Django is about three or four really, really good seats. And the rest of the movie is sorta nothing. It's just sort of there. But those two or three scenes are really really good. But and me Franco Nero, sort of like you watch a bad Clint Eastwood Western, it's still pretty good. Sure. And I think he's got a little bit of that, too. So those are really cool. Well, you guys know how much I love my shark movies. Oh, yeah. And there's a brand new shark movie, they had to rent. And imagine my surprise when I was pretty dang good. I personally shocked it's called Great White. And it's an Australian movie. And it's about these. This, this young couple who rent out their plane to take people to this, this island out in the middle of nowhere. And, of course, then there's this horrible accident, while they're investigating this boat that's out there half sunk, and they realize there's the shark thing going on. And they have to, they have to get going now, like, like all of these movies. It's, it's a little straining of credibility, because these sharks appear to have an agenda. They're like, really pissed at these particular people, sir, and, and they are just, they will kill to kill, you know, not to eat. So as soon as they're killing someone, they'll just move on to the next person. So that kind of, you know, serial killer sharks stuff that doesn't really work in nature that way, but I still loved every minute of it. The Sharks look pretty good. The acting was really good. And yeah, fun. Great. Wait. Oh my gosh, that's great. Have you you haven't played that shark video game yet have you? know, pretty fun, really dumb, but it is really a really dumb game now. It's, I can't remember what it's called. And I'm sure a lot of people are gonna yelling at the radio right now. But um, yeah, it's, you kind of have agenda, but you're a shark. You're just swimming around eating fish and like stuff. But then you kind of find out that your mom died through certain ways. And there's like, reality TV show that's trying to hunt you down. Like you can like eat them and like land on their boat and like eat the people and then swim back and then but that'll make more reality TV show people come up to try to hunt you and it's got a lot of dum dum stuff in there, but it's it's enjoyable. Sounds like my kind of thing. Yeah, no kidding. I think you'd have a great time. Well, my mom had a birthday. Oh, nice. Yes. It's very exciting. And so we were trying to figure out what to do because it's still COVID and she's still an older human beings. With her she is vaccinated. But um, so a movie had premiered on something HBO, probably I think it was called those who wish me dead. Yeah, that's HBO. Yeah. Starring Angelina Jolie. Jon bernthal. We had Aiden Gillen from the wire. Nicholas Hoult. So, you know, Tyler Perry's in it. So there's like a whole big cast of very famous people. And I was like, I don't know what this is gonna be. Like, it's basically a bunch of like forests, like they're on the move. No words, some forest people like people, you know, preventing forest fires slash like, what are they called? They fly in while there's a forest fire and they try to put it out. And Angelina Jolie has been sequestered to a watch tower for the summer to watch for the forest fires. And meanwhile, there's a kid whose dad is being hunted by people for some reason. And then they're trying to hunt the kid too, because they don't want the kids. I don't know. It's a very action II movie. None of these people should be in this movie. It's very COVID it's like everyone was bored. And I'm like, why is why is Nicholas Hoult here as like a pretty much silent like bad guy sidekick? Who just randomly tries to shoot at people and I was like, this is a bit small for Nicholas Hoult. Selina Jolie's like, I mean, great. She gets to be a badass action star, but it just feels like everybody's like, yeah, that sounds fun. I have nothing going on. Sure. I'll be in this movie. It just feels wildly like you would never expect this particular cast to be playing this. These specific roles except for Aiden Gillen who is great at playing bad guys. So please tell me that Tyler. Tyler Perry is playing his Medea care. Don't go smoke jumping. I don't remember who he is in this. I have to say I feel like a jerk but his name is in here. I just don't remember his character. This sounds like a pass on this one then. I don't know. I mean, it's fun. It's totally again. It's like it's just like the last one is an action film. It's a wild romp. You want to watch people run at people and people hide from people while there's like a giant forest fire encroaching? And that's always joyful. More importantly, how did mom like this? She had a great time. Oh, baby. That was very good. She loves action movies, though. Yeah, yeah. I wonder not surprised. No, our person that helps us with our taxes and various stuff around here. He used to be a forest fire. He didn't do the jump, smoke jumping, but he used to be used to fight forest fires. When he first moved out to Washington State. He was telling us some stories about like, when he was 717, he decided to hitchhike across the US and, and you know, stop wherever he was, and get a job. And we were just like, sitting there with our mouths hanging up and going God, I wish I had done anything when I was 17. He's a good guy. That's incredible. That's absolutely incredible. Now I'm going to look at look at him in a totally different light. She's got a lot of those kinds of stories, actually. But um, so no, I watched a very different film. Happy, fun. Chef. JOHN fabros. Movie, Chef. Oh. Which is from a while ago, yeah, a few years ago. Because apparently, he really got into cooking. He got into cooking. So I wanted to make a movie about that. So he could just probably, you know, learn because he's also the star. Yeah. So you could learn to do some of the stuff and I guess he did a lot of the stuff that's in there. And it is, like middag to turn to the end is just good time fun. I kept waiting for something to go wrong or something some new problem to happen, but basically goes through a whole lot of shit to the first half of the movie, and then spent the rest of the movie being happy and finally fell the city you live in Mississippi, it was like that was a lot of fun. Yeah, I thought it was cute. Yep. That sounds like a great movie right now. Right? rush out with your mom. I maybe I will. Well, how about we take a little break, guys. I'll go and check on my neighbor. Please. Please wait, here we go. And we'll talk workplace horror. When we asked Reebok to send us Terry Tate, some people thought we were crazy. But I'm a firm believer in paradigm breaking outside the box thinking. And since Terry has been with us, our productivity has gone up 46% we're getting more from our employees than ever before. You know, you need a cover sheet or your TPS reports. But what's really impressed me is how Terry's become part of the felcher family. He fits right in here. To be honest, I wish Reebok sent us 10 Terry tastes woman is daytime baby. We are back and this was my sub genre you guys I wanted to do workplace horror horror in the workplace. What am I going to call this office hoarders? I don't know what you guys are. So I don't know if that I don't want to borrow from my title. I was going to do the belko experiment. And I watched about 40 minutes of it and I was like god damn, I think I liked this when I first saw it and it was just so fucking mean spirited that I was not having a good time with it. And so I decided to go with something kind of similar but different. And that is me him being transformed Welcome to the home of towers and smart consulting GSE is a firm fueled by greed, duplicity. I'm gonna need some scouts. How are you doing? firing? I'm not leaving this building until I plead my case. Sure. Good luck with that. What's the hell is going on? saying hello to the ID seven virus. stress hormone levels rise causing inhibitions to drop basic instincts to rise to the surface. all traces of the virus should be eliminated in approximately eight hours. What do we suppose For the next eight hours try to remain calm. Hey, extreme measures right? I'm offering 150 grand for chose ad talking about murder here. You should be offering at least 450 Yup. He wants to do this the hard way. I just picked this up. Nice love this video. It's a good one from 2017 I could find no budget or box office. It is a shutter original. So that will be why there's no box office. The Rotten Tomatoes. The critics have this at 84% and the audience has it at 65% Ouch. I don't know why that's so weird. Because this is a good movie. Yeah. Is to be an audience favorite. Yeah. Weird. Directed by Joe Lynch, who directed wrong turn two nights of badass them and a couple of episodes of creep show and written by Matthias Caruso, who's done just a bunch of short films and one feature called brouhaha. It stars Steven yen. Who is Glenn on the walking dead and the voice of mark on invincible and semara weaving from the babysitter ready or not guns akimbo bill and Ted face the music and a bunch of other stuff. She is become kind of genre. Wayne? She's great. And we lucked out. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. So this movie opens with Steven yen, basically, kind of introducing us via voiceover to what is going on in the world right there. And there is a virus, a pandemic a bit called the ID seven virus or red eye virus has been spreading throughout the world. And it infects neural pathways, removing all inhibitions and integrity. And it kind of causes people to act out on their darkest impulses. So it's not lethal. Unless the person who has acting out on his darkest impulses wants to kill you. I guess it would be lethal. The first known case of murder was committed by a guy who stabbed a co worker and it was not deemed liable due to the influence of the virus. So, Derek, Steven yen, he works as a lawyer at this place towers and Smith consulting. That's the firm that handled that case. And we start off with him talking about how he began this career full of optimism and everything, but ended up backstabbing, cheating, and finding loophole after loophole in order to work his way up the corporate ladder and get a corner office. So right off the bat, he's, he's an asshole, but he's likable because he's telling you how much he hates, What an asshole he's become. So one morning goes into work and finds that his favorite mug is missing. And leads also within this furious client, which is Samira weavin, who needs more time on a loan, and he's unable to help her kind of willing to help her because he's still a bit of an asshole here at the beginning. But then, after discovering that a bungled legal case for this huge company has been pinned on him by his superior. He goes in and confronts her and finds his mug desk. And they both go up to the top to see the big boss. She wins him over very easily. And Derek is then laid off, he's given his notice. And we start seeing, it's almost like a zombie film and that we start seeing people kind of getting angry in the background and stuff like this. You realize as you're watching, oh, something's happening. He gets dragged down and he's he's got his box full of stuff and everything. He opens the door to leave and outside is a SWAT team with a bunch of guns on the doors and they're like, you guys are being quarantined. There's been an infection. And they dropped this big huge net basically over the building. And the thing about this virus is it generally burns itself out in like 24 hours, so they're told to just basically sit tight, everybody dotcom Lee, it's gonna be fine. immediately started hitting each other, fighting with each other. And if he gets grabbed, he goes you know, he's you can tell the people are infected because they have one red eye. This is an interesting thing to do, because it lets you know when someone's infected for the movie, but it is so uncomfortable looking that I just like got it really hate that everybody's got this one red eye in this movie, it's really disturbing Look, he decides he's gonna go up and talk to the top guy. And he commandeers an elevator and starts trying to make his way up there and gets caught very quickly and thrown into this room where he's beaten up a little bit. And he meets then some are weaving who has also been thrown in there. They both are infected, and they're both kind of fighting with each other. And they do fight with each other. They have a little fist fight and all this stuff. But then he he basically convinces her Hey, we can work together, get your loan figured out, we get my job back, and all it's gonna take is us beating our way through everybody. And, and they're both totally fine with us because they're both infected. And that's basically the rest of the movie is him. Kind of it's I mean, it's a super obvious metaphor. He is climbing his way to the top and backstabbing, literally backstabbing. And we're doing all of this horrible shit. And meeting up with all these people. And it's kind of got a video game feel to it, because he has to get to one boss who has a key card, which will get them up to the third floor. But then there's someone on that, that has a key card that can get them up to the top and so they have to like, beat these bosses Get it? And it's this, this movie would have been better called boss level. This one. Yeah. Yeah, I was thinking that exact same thing. But there's all this fun stuff going on. And the thing is, is, I mean, there's some cringy violence in this, like people getting hit with hammers in the face and all of this stuff. But it's handled so much differently than the belko experiment. Because you're really rooting for this guy. You feel like he's undergoing a, a character change, and you're starting to root for him, and he's being less of an asshole. He's actually looking out for someone else. The chemistry between him and Samarra weaving is fantastic. I mean, this is just a really gory, fun movie. And I saw it when it first came down. I remember liking it a lot. And now watching it after watching the belko experiment. I was like, wow, this movie is head and shoulders above that film. It's very similar premise, but I don't know there's just the the joy of filmmaking in this. And I feel like the writer who you know, only one other film. He he nailed this so spectacularly. And how was it that? Who did the belko experiment? Oh, why can't I think Zack know? His brother's name is? Yeah. Director guardians. The James Gunn. Yeah. James brothers, Zack. And that's what I was thinking. How did he who is a writer I love how did he miss so spectacularly on the belko experiment? It's very confusing. I almost did belko experiment for that exact reason, because I was really excited and then watch the trailer and decided not to. But yeah, like mayhem is, it's weird. It doesn't. It feels like How did this happen? Like, where did this come from? It is such a good, charming film. So well written so well paced, so well acted, it just feels like it came from the ether in some magical wizard when you deserve this kind of film. This was the first movie that I noticed there was a shutter exclusive. And I remember thinking, oh boy, this will be bad. Oh, and, and it was so good that I was like what's going on here. And so a shutter had gotten some kind of influx of cash and had decided we're going to go to these film markets. And we're going to become a distribution company as well. So they would go in and and actually spend some money on these things. And they're, you know, horror fans who were actually looking for, right, or as opposed to Well, this will sell because it's horror, right? So anyhow, I have just one little piece of trivia here and this really uncomfortable. I'll show you that there. There's a scene with two employees having sex in the background. Oh, by Oh, I think I and the two employees having sex. We're actually having sex on set. They are in a relationship, and they went for it. Oh, my authentic. Why not? I read this and now I kind of want to watch this scene again. It's like it's not as sexy as you think it is. Because I remember knowing before and watching and going I mean, it doesn't They could have been faking it. It's like, Well, yeah, I didn't feel like boy that is an authentic looking now. So let's say two people bump in. Yeah. And then finally, it was filmed in Belgrade, Serbia in March over 25 days as all one word. And when you think of it, that is pretty amazing because there's a lot of shit going on a lot of affects continuity alone that's in scene. Yeah. Yeah. Because both of them have a bunch of blood running down their face all the time. And I'm like, those just matches pretty well from shot to shot. Yeah. And all the physicality in that movie. Wow, there is so much. I mean, there's one scene where they just kind of run into this gang, and they just start swinging. She's got a nail gun. And he's got, he's got a wrench. And then they just go to town on everybody. And he just keeps seeing people get hit in the face with a wrench or a hammer. And it's like, Fuck, ouch. Oh, my God, and he gets stabbed. Like, wow, this is a brutal movie, but for some reason. Never as meanspirited is no go. Wow. Just making me very happy. I didn't watch belko so for my tech, I actually I was so excited because I forgot how much I wanted to see this movie until I was looking for films and came across the trailer for this and was like, Oh my God, I've wanted to watch this for ever. So I went with the 1997 movie nightwatch I think the best attitude to take is that you'll have plenty of quiet time to study. Assuming the idea that doesn't bother you some people it bothers me a longer night. They tell you sometimes East comes in but apart from that issues you as a full time student needed for the night time job. How can you give away all your nights without talking to me? Test testing myself? You don't think it's weird? I have a pretty high tolerance that sort of thing. But he just accepted a 17 year old girl was found dead this evening. was many weeks and six in the last two months. I saw her in the hallway. Watching Martin Bell, a series of murders Your dad Your dad with differences when someone does have invaded his life. interrogated letters are well beyond the need to justify what they do. In the mind of the police tell me why you did the rounds last night. Of course. Why is it dead girl tells me you're the one that's been in the prime suspect. They know who it is. They have a suspected me. Boy they got the wrong guy. Martin is not a murderer. It This is what I think there's someone very dangerous standing right behind you in the dark breathing down here. Are you still going to maintain your innocence? Watch. I like this one. I do too. This is the Russian film right? No, this is a Ewan McGregor. Ewan McGregor movie. Oh, I don't know this one though. Yeah, it does not have the space between night and watch. I don't know if that makes it different from the Russian one or not? Yeah, no, it's it's interesting. In that it, oh my god. Anyway, well, just tell us about the movie. Who wrote it? who directed it? So this one has a Rotten Tomato score actually really low 28% critics and 48% audience. Critics, from what I could see on Rotten Tomatoes basically said it wasn't as good as the original. It is based off of a Danish film called not to forgotten not to forgotten. And they were down on it because of its lack of success. And I was like, that's a very lazy Critical response. No, I was not a good movie because it didn't make much money. Wow. Okay. In that day. The budget for this movie was 10 million box office 1.30. Yeah, I is directed and written by all born Adele, who had actually directed and written the 94 Danish version. It was Co written by Steven Soderbergh. Oh, yeah, she's, um, this firm is kind of crazy. So for example, we have Ewan McGregor, Lauren Graham, Patricia Arquette, and a very baby looking Josh Brolin sitting around hanging out together. As for friends, watching the TV ad, this is the start. And you see Nick naughty show up? Well, yeah, the cast for This is nuts. And that it also has Lani Chapman broad drif a couple other smaller names like Alex huruma Xay, who is in Kindergarten Cop and the haunting, but we all kind of know these other these other people. But it's just weird to see. I mean, you didn't McGregor was definitely famous at this point. But Josh Brolin is just like the buddy, but he's such a powerful actor. It's insane. And then Lauren Graham, it's like, she's, she's, she's like the Highlander. She's not looking any different. Every time. He heard anything. It is like I've seen her all the way through Gilmore Girls. I've seen her like advertisements for more recent stuff. She looks the same in every single she looks. Not super young. Not super old. Definitely gorgeous, good jeans. Absolutely. The plot is a law student takes a job as a night watchman to pay some bills and give him some time to study. He's got a really pushy, distracting BFF which is Josh Brolin. And, of course, things go kind of wrong, as you would hope on a horror film. Um, first day on the job, Lonnie Chapman shows him around. He's a retiring old nightwatchman, he won't really say why he's retiring. He just keeps looking at him and saying, well, they told you why I was retiring, didn't they, and then just keeps going. And there, he's showing him around the building that he's going to be keeping an eye on. And the The main thing is, it's a mortuary. It's got a area where they keep all the dead bodies. There's also a room of formaldehyde that you don't want to look into, apparently. And it's kind of a lot of like kind of rooms filled with horrors. And his job is every night at a certain time, he's going to have to walk through each of these rooms, check them basically walk to the end and back and lock it up. Make sure it's all safe, safe and tight. But it's really not that hard of a job because the rest of the time he can just sit there and study except for this place is hella creepy. Now, it really sets things up immediately that way, when Lonnie Chapman is showing him around, it feels like you're watching a David Lynch film, like everything feels very straightforward what he's saying very important, but also makes no sense. Like he keeps saying things like you're going to need a radio and he says it over and over again. He's like, you got a radio right? You're going to need a radio cuz he's like losing touch. She's older guy doesn't quite remember what's going on. And, you know, he's like, Oh, really bad things happened here. And there's a picture behind on a bulletin board inside the Office of this guy leaning against a wall, and you're McGregor's. Like, so who was that? He's like, some guy on death row. I don't know. It's been here since I started. And there's just this constant dialogue of like hinting at something strange and dark and deep, but we just don't know what the hell it is. And Ewan McGregor isn't the kind of guy who you're going to instantly find out with because he's very like pompous like, thinks he's super fucking cool thinks he's like above it all kind of guy. So everything starts to take a twist when a prostitute is brought in in the middle of the night, to be taken down to the morgue and a detective on the case played by Nick nulty. as Detective crais shows up and also kind of shows him the ropes a little bit more properly than the nightwatchman did. He explains to him kind of what's going on how things work around here. And the case that this prostitutes involved in apparently there's a serial killer, taking out prostitutes, pretending it like basically hiring them to pretend that they're dead, and then actually killing them and carving out their eyes. So that's this guy's Mo. McNulty is super nice in a way that no one else has been to Ewan McGregor's character, Martin Bell's just kind of helping him out a little bit really taking him under his wing and saying, okay, kid, don't worry about it. It's not a hard job. Don't worry about this and that you'll be fine. Meanwhile, things start to get a little strange. His best friend James, who's played by Brolin begins to act really weird. He starts off by playing a prank on martin pretending to be a body that comes to life so breaks into the morgue sneaks past and goes down. And then like there's a there's these pull cords over each of the dead bodies so that if somebody were you know, actually Live, they could pull it in a light would go off, and he'd have to go down and check it out. So there's a lot of creepy moments of him, like being worried this thing is gonna go off at all times. And then like other things happen, like his alarm goes off telling him, he needs to like go and check on the bodies. And he's like, Okay, and so the light actually goes off. And he's like, Oh, what? And of course, it's his friend playing a prank on him. So you're like, Okay, that's a little bit strange. Then his friend also starts this bar fight. They're both like academic, academic kids. So they're very smart, a little too smart, for their own good. And like his friend, like starts a fight with these two huge, very basic thug looking dudes by basically calling them Neanderthals and asking when their hair fell out, and all of this kind of ridiculous stuff and and then confessing, after they leave the bar, that he met this prostitute, and he paid her just to watch her do very random things. He was like, it was fascinating. I would tell her go stand over there, she goes, stand over there, tell her come over here, she'd come over there. And you ended up sleeping with her. So James is going through this kind of weird moment in life where he's acting out in bizarre ways. And it only gets worse when he puts his friend Martin on a blind date with a prostitute named Joyce, and then interrupts their date by sitting down and making Joyce do weird things and saying, I will give you $50 if you drink this drink, and she goes, Okay, and then he pours it to the very, very top, and then lifts the finger and starts forcing her to drink faster and faster. So James is doing some weird shit and then trying to get her to give his buddy, you McGregor a handjob at the table. And then he says, I I'll give you 150 bucks. That's my all my money I've got on me today, if you can tell me that you love me, but mean it. And this poor? I mean, this poor prostitute is just empty. And she isn't she's barely there at all, as it is, she is only been giving one word answers. And so she tries and tries and tries is really an upsetting scene where he's just like, No, I don't believe you know, I don't believe you. And then in the end, he doesn't give her the cash. She says she can do and she's like, sobbing. It's really rough. So of course, you know, you start to wonder James knows the layout of this place, and seems to be messing with some prostitutes. Maybe there's something going on here. But we also started to see that there might be an implication that you and mckercher might be behind these prostitute killings, they start to find pieces of his DNA around the body of one of the prostitutes, is sexually assaulted and moved to another place. And they think that maybe he's involved. There was a previous nightwatchman who had this same problem where Apparently, it been sexually assaulting the dead bodies. And the prostitute from this dinner, gets in contact with his girlfriend and says, you have to ask him to stop doing this in his girlfriend's like, What? What are you talking about? She and she says, he's making me play dead while he's hiring me and making me play dead. So obviously, somebody is trying to set him up for the fall of this serial killer. And we don't know who it could be so many people. I mean, obviously, his best friend is potentially behind it. But then we also have Brad dourif. Who's this kind of assholey like head mortician who comes in anytime something goes wrong. So when the light goes off, he's supposed to call like the the kind of doctors to come in and check in on this body and Brad dourif shows up. And he's like, Oh, sorry. Yeah, false alarm and Brad drops like what the fuck, I just got here. I'm going to fight fire you if you do this shit again. I'm it's weird to see him has kind of straight laced, but they also give him like this drug addiction. So he's like, Hey, man, are you a fan of like the Xen family? And he's like, what do you mean the Xen family and he lists all these drugs that end with Xen. He's like, I will give you one right now if you calm the fuck down. So there's Broderick who, you know, is trying to get him fired, and it's like, okay, maybe he knows everything. He's really fucking weird. But the evidence is piling up further and further against Martin, as we try to figure it out. And then, of course, tension builds, and we end up in this sort of amazing final act of twists and turns. And final killer versus nonprofessional hero detective story. This film was I really liked it. I had no idea who did it and I just had all the way through going. Movies. This person, maybe it's this person, I actually put a monetary At the start of this movie, I bet it's gonna be Brad dourif because why else would Brad derf be in this movie? Angelica he's fun casting. Oh my gosh, totally. And like, you know, and I don't know how well Brad nerve was known at that point. I just don't know his career well enough. So I was just like, maybe like he wasn't a big enough actors, but people didn't realize he's always bad one. It has such a great cast Brolin is kind of stunning in this film, he plays this fine line, where you can see him as potentially a serial killer, or potentially a lost college kid, or potentially, just the fun best friend who goes a little too far sometimes. And it's such a fine line, but he just dances it like nobody's business. Ewan McGregor is great as a cocky asshole. He's constantly like working and being really stressed out and freaked out is it's so dark. And there are these big trees outside of the building. And they're wrapped in plastic, like black plastic. So it's this at nighttime, you constantly see through the windows is flapping black plastic in the wind. And it's like you can see shapes in it sometimes. And they do such a good job of that mindset that maybe Kelly you're even familiar with. Having seen strange things down the street. It reminded me so much of that, where it's just like, what is this? What is this? Oh my god. And there's this constant play of like paranoia and like just fear of what's going on in the evening. So that's really done. Well. There's a really cool moment where we have you McGregor confronting James Brolin in a laundry mat, and I noticed all of the washing machines were going behind him and they all had read stuff in it. It was like read clothing and read towels, every single one. So it was just bouncing red, like flying around behind him. I was like, wow, that's like a weird detail. But so cool. Um, there's also this other just nice details. There's moths that are in the light above. Ewan McGregor like in his little office. And as the movie goes, they become a metaphor for what's going on with him. Interesting. Yeah. So he gets like further and further entangled. And then at one point, he looks up and they're all dead. And you're like, oh, man shits gonna go. Just a lot of really genuinely creepy, nice moments. disliked. There's a couple of things that don't pay off that whole radio joke at the start with Lonnie Chapman where he's like, you got to have a radio son, you need to get a break. He never has one. And I'm like, Why? Why did you do this? I feel like it was such a lead up for nothing. Um, the ending feels super abrupt and a little bit strange. I'm not entirely sure it feels like there's supposed to be some meaning behind it. But I'm not sure what that meaning is. People, we have to stop making people chop off fingers to get out of handcuffs. I'm going to put in this special request. Really not anymore. Because I'm really done saying I just cannot handle this again. And I was just like, as soon as there was a moment and I was like, No, no, no. Okay, it's happening. It's happening. That's awesome. Also, Lauren Graham in this movie, she's super underused. And she just kind of becomes this character of the girlfriend who gets cheated on but keeps dating Josh Brolin it's weird role and she's just a way that heavier hitter than that, and at times, it becomes super melodramatic. So a little bit of trivia about this foam. After the knots the gotten found. The original Danish film found critical acclaim and 94 director or born Adele was hired by Dimension Films could purchase the rights to come to the US to remake the film. It was intended to be the first of three films bordel Warner doll would direct for Miramax obviously. I don't believe that happened. nightwatch took a year to complete due to a series of test screenings and reshoots, Miramax ordered changes made by Miramax to the finished cut included reducing the role of James's girlfriend Maria, which is Lauren Graham, and adding a more satisfying final scene quote unquote. Born Adele went on to state that the actual shooting of nightwatch was terrific. Everything was totally wonderful and I was free to do as I pleased, but everything suddenly became extremely complicated during the post production phase. The CO writer I believe Steven Soderbergh, as his name, described it as himself as having to sanitize the original 1994 script. For example, the Danish version, there was a scene at the scene at the restaurant with the prostitute on he's actually supposed to get a blowjob instead of a handjob. They also added weird American pop culture references At one point, they say something like, it's just like one of those movies on the USA Network where the hero sees something weird and no one will believe him. And at that moment, I just was like, why did they just reference the USA Network for no apparent reason whatsoever? It sounds like native advertising to me. Really does. It was very strange. Soderbergh himself noted his frustrations that how nearly a year after shooting had begun, he was being forced to provide new script pages for reshoots, there were going to be detrimental to the quality of the film, lots and lots and lots of re shoots. In the United States. nightwatch was originally scheduled to come out in the fall of 96. Due to the extended post production it was pushed back to several dates, including Spring Summer of 97 and October 97, as suggested by the film's copyright year, before eventually getting to theaters April 98. It was claimed that October 97 really did really state was cancelled to avoid competition with another Ewan McGregor film, a lifeless ordinary that really said same month. Nick nanti said of nightwatch as the studio got it, they realized that they had a European paste film and they kept hacking at it and hacking at it. Ewan McGregor similarly remarked at the time that this was the perfect example of a film they would not leave alone, there was constant reshoots, including the ending, and they took all the interesting stuff out making it bland. The original concept was the reason I accepted it in the first place. And I had a massive, I had massive strands of the character removed, which is insulting. In 2019. McGregor again, spoke out against mirova axes production interference on the watch, claiming Harvey Weinstein ruined that film, and that Weinstein made us reshoot everything that was interesting about the film was replaced. For all of that, because in between the rotten tomatoes score, and different you know, the different stories of how it was reshaped and remodeled and redone, you would think this film sucks, was actually pretty good. Like I as much as people, you know, say that it would have been great to see what the original version of this was, and maybe just seeing the Danish version is probably the ticket to that. Yeah, I think it's a really good, really good film that ages extremely well. Two questions. Yes. Does this all take place over one night? It does not. Okay. It's over like weeks and weeks. Okay, good. Because it's like, boy, this sounds like an awful lot of shit. No, no, it's really funny. So all the scary moments you see with Ewan McGregor where he's, like, petrified in his office. They then overlap with him hanging out with his friends like that next day being like, No, I wasn't scared. Oh, yeah. Like they showed me this dead prostitute. It's no big deal, though. I mean, it's just death. Right? That's supernatural. And you see, his eyes are like saucers. He like can't breathe. And they just keep doing that over and over again. So there's this there's a really good play with like, time It feels it feels like it was pretty well. And then what did you watch it on? Oh, I actually paid the $4 Oh, no, I didn't. I'm sorry. I watched it for free on Plex. Don't do that. Oh, hey, the $4 for Amazon for the love of God. There were so many ads. It was like every five minutes is Yeah. And I felt committed. I wanted to stop about halfway through and just watch it properly. But I just had a really far. You sold me on this one. I've never seen it. So check it out. Check it out. I remember it is one of those you know, Ewan McGregor things that I saw shallow grave is like I must watch all his movies, right? It's pretty good. My title is less friendly to the general posting. I watched 2020s But boy, what do you do? Detective? You look every detective ever. Oh, yes. Oh, just get the greasy hair and the the earring. Looks good. You look good. What about you? What will you do? tragedy strikes pretty good county today as law enforcement have yet to make any missing child advantage this morning. So you're asking me to go off this theory you got about a white married male who happens to be a father living in the suburbs in pretty big County, who also happens to be your age and monster objects, animals and children. Then he somehow digest them. And he does this and sprays almost in serial killer fashion. I don't know if I like the idea of workplace horror on this one. This I've never even heard of this. Well, it's Rotten Tomatoes, scar critics it's 70 audience at 64 Island budgeted estimation 150,000 you know that's an estimation. Wow. Box Office. No friggin idea. Yeah. 2020. So, the director by Tara Tyler koryak, who's most known for a series called tiny cinema TV, which is like 83 episodes. It's like a episodic comedy skit show or something I'm not sure. And something called the pocket tears. He's also the writer, which, with his writing partner, Ryan, coach, they both written almost everything together. At say, lots of shorts, directors films. And that also holds true for the actors. That Tyler is one of the lead actors so the director plays the lead detective in the movie. And there's Shelby dasch who has been in most of Tyler's movies, but also in Vampire Diaries. dot dot dot for real now and though question mark noises women wake when eating cake. Okay, and Brad Potts, Susan barely love a bear mauling loves story musical. Sorry, that's a lot to take pics about my date on it. And circus of the dead and Puppet Master 10 axis rising. But there's 10 hours at least. Wow. This presented by epic pictures logo comes along. See this one a lot. So it starts off. My first thought the first shot like whoa, this is a lot more low budget than I thought. Which is weird because the rest of the movie looks fantastic. But this first shot just looks bad. But it's the he's at work. Doing it work for a roofing company that starts their day every morning with a rap cheer where they all get together and rap about the day's work. Oh my god, either. If you ever worked in a place that does that. Oh my god, really weird. And it really doesn't work at all. So in our lead guy here has to go in and chip and get the old finger up the butt check. And when he goes into the doctor, the doctor seems to leave it there for too long, but chip doesn't seem to mind. Wow. Yes, I said that a lot during this. Oh my god. And of course you helped me a movie. He doesn't have a happy marriage. Wondering if his wife's having an affair. She has no interest in helping with his new fetish. Jesus, but boy is he interested in continuing his new fetish. And it's implied but stuff because of the doctor this Yeah. Okay. And it escalates quickly, because the family dog disappears. That's complex. Yes. And then he goes to a park sees a lady playing with a kid. Next scene, the police here at the door asking what he was doing in the park? Because there's a missing child. Why? The implication is that he's sticking all this stuff up his butt. Yes. Okay. Oh, yeah, it's, I know what that means. My next line here the magic in this film seems to be the guy can stick anything up his button. little weird credits roll 13 minutes into the movie. They're really long. But this is when Tyler the copy introduced is introduced in his story. Man, he's added At a meeting and the chip the chip chip is turns out to be a sponsor for is a chip aka bud partner right? They got to dig out to a dinner afterwards and the cop apparently loves hot sauce I'm not sure why this is in the film but he like layers and stuff with hot sauce. And that's development There you go. The movie starts off feeling almost like a strange alternative to that film I like last year with a swallow. Yeah, by the end of the movie. No, definitely not that because it had early on it has that same feeling of somebody trying to find something going right in their world when their job sucks and their marriage sucks and his butts happy he's back at work but the boss is upset because a an achievement plaque has gone missing. Oh my god. No and and now a tennis shoe and a weird scene to the light bulb. All of this with the exception of the light bulb is played off screen you don't really get like really? What? What is that really what's going on this movie. So the film deals a lot with obsession so they show the cop also being kind of an obsessive except his obsession is with busting people big a cop. But the the job has a Bring Your Child to Work Day. And so we get a shot of one of the chuck they decided to to play hide and seek at work. And one of the children. He see a guy working with chip working at his desk and suddenly there's a kid underneath his desk. The next scene is him erasing videotapes. Then I wrote at this point, it sure seems like he might be sticking kids up his butt. However, it still feels like really, is that really what's going on? So you're still not entirely certain? Here's a great breakdown of the story by the ADA cops, Chief. So this is this whole line is in the movie. So you're asking me to go off this theory you got about a white married male who happens to be a father living in the sub term suburbs, who also happens to be your a sponsor, which I might add has been secretly running around cramming objects, animals and children up his asshole. Then he somehow digests them. And he does this in sprees, almost in a serial killer fashion. Is that about it? Yes, that's exactly it. So the cop joins family for dinner. And for some reason. Well, okay, watch after the watching movies done. I know it happens. But it works rough in the movie, where he's got the, he's got like a three quarter inch disk of the video, the hard plastic ones, I used to have four of the move of the footage from work. And he's trying to find a place to hide it. So I'm obviously thinking but there's a really obvious shoe location. But for some reason, he doesn't do that. And later on in the movie, I find out why he didn't do that. But the cop finds that desk in the bathroom. Because the cop had to take a dump cost both ways now. Then the story goes back and forth continues there, say a children's birthday. And it's a laser tag game. It's actually an incredibly well, shot scene feels almost like a climax of the movie with all the stuff that's going on. Not all people running down, but it's not. So if you're intrigued by this film, because I got to talk about what's really going on. At one point, the cop it looks like cops gonna bust him and he runs away and you get a objects in mirror shot of the guy bending over opening his butt cheeks. And it's like this sound of wind starting to pull the cop. He's got it. He's got a black hole in his ass basically. Yes. Wow. And so, so the cop gets pulled into his butt. Okay, the child that was in the park was his child. And the kid from the office is there too. So it's like a little world inside is but the dog is alive to see inside his butt. So just like blacking that, or no, it's really gross. It's kind of reddish and wet looking. And they did some kind of a effect over the top that makes it sort of look like you know how when it's really hot outside and you see the Mirage look from a distance sort of looks like that to imply that it's really hot and stinky in there. Wow. And they have a scary moment when he farts which is actually quite hilarious and the way it works out but the cops figure some stuff out and well it just goes from there. But let me tell you the end of this movie is so sweet and so full of hope. art that it makes. I'm watching this movie. It's fine. It's fine. It's funny. It's weird. It's bizarre, but the ending is so heartfelt and so sincere, that it paints the rest of the movie as being far better than I think it really is. So it was it was good. We got some trivia notes. Cuz you know, I don't think I'd need to go deeply into this story. I was kind of expecting the movie, you know, my low. Yes, we've got that. But creature. I was expecting something like that. But it's actually a much subtler film. Despite everything I said, about obsessions and works well. It was john waters favorite 2020 film, it tells you a lot about it right there and sound like the john waters. The hairspray guy here guys, then all those sweet little family movies. There's a lot of reviews, say comparing it to the concept of a serial killer movie, which I think is an incredibly lazy review, in that there's a cop investigating something weird disappearances. But there's no deaths. There's no real. Everybody's just missing. So I was like, No, I don't I don't see that at all. premiere two, four sold out screenings at Fantastic Fest in Austin. And it was actually based on want to tiny cinemas original comedy sketches. I like the consensus that was listed in Rotten Tomatoes instead of a gross out gag fest. But boy is a surprisingly tender Bizarro comedy. That works best because it plays the strangeness so straight. So Wow, office high jinks ensue What did you watch this on? Prime amazon prime. So you don't have to pay to rent. Well, that's good. Yeah. Good viewing your future. Haha. I sold Yeah, this one right. Ah, hi. y'all gotta got right and do sounds very intriguing. I was I yeah, I was pretty surprised. Yeah, I mean that. But I have sticking things up my butt. I think this would be the movie for me. But it's just not working. There's something about it. That just isn't the best selling. selling point to me. I can't quite say what it is. But just put your finger there. I can't put my finger. It's right on the tip of my tongue. Eric, yes, I'm horrified that you have the next sub genre. Well, I'm inspired by but we're, we're faces. It's hard. This is you know, that's like the title come first for a movie. I feel like now we need to check that is the title. But not this. We're looking at the idea of knockoff movies. Not sequels, not reimaginings or remake kings. But that big movie comes out and suddenly you see 40 movies like like transformers and trans morphers. The final version there. So make sense? Yeah. Yeah. And I like to use the asylum collection. So there you go. Speaking of that, we talked about army the dead last week. Did Did anybody notice the very blatant aliens stuff going on in that movie? I mean, some of the characters looked exactly like Why can't I think that? Xenomorphs? No, no, no, no, no. The the crew that he brings in, they were so cookie cutter alien Marines. Yeah, I can see that. Yeah, including the one guy who sent in as a corporate guy. And yeah. Wow, I feel like he really wanted to make a aliens movie. And I think my favorite part is when they get to that when they actually get to the What's it called? Safe, safe. Brain do better when they get to the safe and you've got the German kid who's like the safe expert. And they look down at the the bodies that all the other people who've tried to get in and it's like them, yeah. infinite loop of trying over and over again, to get it safe. And just failing. I was like, What if it is? That's crazy. What if they all are when they finally got to the safe? And he's doing all this stuff? I was like, why can't the guy who owned the safe and sent them on this? Just give them the combo to get into the safe? Oh my god. Why not? That's a great question. Well, then you would have the cool German kid. Thank you. Go Yeah. Okay, so that is the show. Thanks, Eric for that. Wonderful. I'm glad to end it that way. Oh my god. And many thanks to everyone who's out there liking and sharing who's participating in the value for value method and all of this stuff. We love everybody so much and yes, can't can't say thank you enough times. And with apologies to Vanessa's mother for my movie this oh my god, make sure to share this with your family. I it's funny because so many of my relatives have gotten sucked in and I'm like, I'm not censoring anything that I say I'm just aware, right? I'm just very aware now. Right? Well, I'm sure she's gonna have a talking to you about who you hang out. Oh, she asks about you guys. Don't worry. We're there. Oh, good night. Okay, so that is the show. We'll be back in one week. And we are talking knockoffs off Yeah. All right, see you.
