[01:00:00:04 - 01:00:08:14]
I knew it was going to get really, really toasty. Oh, I'm sorry. Did I break your concentration?

[01:00:13:04 - 01:00:16:05]
 Somewhere between science and superstition.

[01:00:21:05 - 01:00:24:10]
We have such sites to show you.

[01:00:31:04 - 01:00:33:21]
 Strange Eons.

[01:00:34:23 - 01:00:38:22]
Welcome to Strange Eons Radio. That is Eric down there somewhere. Hello.

[01:00:39:23 - 01:00:51:09]
And that is Vanessa over there somewhere. Hello. And I am Kelly. You guys may not realize it if you don't watch the video, but we are recording by Zoom today.

[01:00:53:03 - 01:01:12:08]
I'm not sure exactly why we have decided to do this, except I'm kind of glad because it's 9,000 degrees in my house and bringing in two more bodies that are 96 degrees plus each would really piss me off. Yeah, it would be too much heat in one space. So that alone is a good reason.

[01:01:13:13 - 01:01:39:16]
I think the reason we're not meeting today is because I'm too pregnant and no, I'm not getting in a car. Pregnant drive for a long time. I don't want to. I want to sit in a car for two hours while I'm this pregnant right now. So I'm curious to see how Vanessa is going to be moving her head around to try and get out of the sunbeam that's blasting through her window. Yeah, it's yeah, I know. I'm going to slowly evade. Maybe I can move my camera with me. There we go.

[01:01:40:20 - 01:01:46:14]
I'm just like decking from it because it's yeah, the sunset is coming for my face right now.

[01:01:48:12 - 01:01:51:18]
We are in the middle of a heat advisory.

[01:01:52:21 - 01:02:07:09]
I don't know if you guys looked at your temperature today. Mine got up to 93 is what I saw as I was driving. I have not been watching, but yeah, I knew it was going to get really, really toasty. Only 91 here.

[01:02:09:10 - 01:02:40:17]
Well, and right now, I think it's only 83 up here, but it's still, you know, the sun has been blasting through my windows all day. So it's hotter than that in the house and the audacity that I don't know if you get those alerts from Puget Sound Energy where they're like, hey, if you want to save some money, why don't you turn off all your electricity for the following hours? And today it's from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. And I was like, I will not be participating. I'm going to get every single fan on in my house. Thank you very much. Yeah, it's like a four time choice.

[01:02:41:20 - 01:02:52:13]
It's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I'm like, yeah, OK, yeah, I guess now would be a great day for you guys to save some cash. But I don't have any sympathy for Puget Sound Energy. They are the worst.

[01:02:53:20 - 01:03:58:18]
I know, like now forget it. Absolutely forget it. They really are the worst. You know, I so when it's snowing, I'm just going to say my echo. I ask my echo every morning when when I'm getting ready for work, you know, what is the forecast? And she then tells me what's going to go on. And when we're in snow season, I always ask, will it snow today? Well, she has got that in her head so that like when I ask this morning, what is going to be and every morning now, she's first off, she starts by saying, well, which I think is a little odd. And then she says it's 59 degrees right now. Feels like 65 going to be a high of 90 today. No rain or snow in the forecast. And I finally said, why do you keep telling me I'm having conversations with my echo now. So why do you keep telling me there's not going to be snow? And she says, Kelly, I know how much you enjoy the snow.

[01:04:01:20 - 01:04:17:04]
That's not OK. That's not. But also, that's not that's not true. So I told her, I said, I don't enjoy the snow. I just need to know if the snow is going to happen when I'm heading to work. Oh, my God. So, yeah, we have a we have a relationship, her and I.

[01:04:18:18 - 01:04:20:06]
 Language is a beautiful thing.

[01:04:21:07 - 01:04:46:06]
It really is. You know, what I wish I was doing right now was sitting in a movie theater with a sea blessing. But I I have seen some cool stuff. And one of the things I saw was Toy Story Five. Oh, my God. You thought I was right. Yeah, I think I've seen four yet. I definitely see you are. Well, you're an idiot. Toy Story Four is amazing.

[01:04:48:00 - 01:04:52:20]
Here's the thing. I wouldn't say you have to rush out for Toy Story Five. Unfortunately, that's too bad.

[01:04:54:10 - 01:05:08:20]
That's going to happen eventually. Yeah, I mean, you know, always been very dependable as a franchise. And this one did not quite hit with me. It was still fine. I'm sure, you know, kids who love.

[01:05:10:03 - 01:05:19:23]
Buzz and Woody and all that, they're going to be fine with it. But I was noticing a little a little wrinkles around the eyes in this particular franchise.

[01:05:22:14 - 01:05:28:01]
But there's still more money to be had. I actually heard Moana was really good. I have not seen it, but

[01:05:29:09 - 01:05:57:21]
we made the live action one. Well, God, all I heard was how horrible it was. Right now, I heard from a film review where I follow that it was like weirdly good and they were totally prepared to hate on it. And they were like, but if you love the rock, which no one here possibly could. So I heard actually some one of the viewers I read said that it was the best action adaptation Disney has done. Wow.

[01:05:59:00 - 01:06:02:16]
Well, it's written by a Lin Manuel Miranda or whatever.

[01:06:03:23 - 01:06:13:18]
Written by what? It's written by is it Lin Manuel Miranda's the guy who did Hamilton. Right. So the rock wraps.

[01:06:15:15 - 01:06:17:17]
Well, I would pay to see.

[01:06:19:23 - 01:07:52:23]
I'm going to I'm probably going to not see that in the theaters and maybe not see it at all. I don't know that I've even seen the original of that, but this live action stuff is getting out of hand. Yeah. Yeah. Wait for the new Toy Story 6 live action. You know, the the animation in this has become so realistic looking that, you know, there there scenes where I was like, oh, is this part live action? And then the kids would get out of a bus or something. I was like, nope, those are digital kids. OK. But and that's that's the problem with all of these live action Disney movies. They're just cartoons. You know, the the jungle book. Yeah. That was a cartoon. Yeah. There was no actual. Yeah. But there's bears and all that stuff. Yeah. It's very weird. And I will say like the Toy Story thing and it followed itself all the way to Target because I went past the oil aisle this morning and there was like a woody thing like statue guy in a box and his press his little badge. So I pressed it and his face like his eyes got like open in a creepy animatronic way and he starts talking, but he doesn't have like wrinkles or joints. And he's like, and it was like, this is the the shit of nightmares. I I was just I averted his gaze by walking around the side of the box. And he was like, please, please don't notice that I exist. Oh, thing from hell.

[01:07:54:06 - 01:08:27:07]
There's a snake in my boot. It was horrible. It was horrible. The way he talked, the way he looked, everything about it. I was like, this is oh, this is so not OK. Him riding a Roomba would be the end of me. See, those are the kind of things you need to grab. You need to pick one of those up and then just put it away because that's the thing that's not going to sell very well and it's going to be worth something. It was only I think it was like 35 bucks or something. I was like surprised at how cheap it was considering how well made it was.

[01:08:28:19 - 01:09:59:05]
You know, this the storyline of this one is that kids aren't playing with their toys anymore. They're all on screens and devices and all that stuff. So I do think it's funny that they have decided that AI Woody for your kid is the way to promote this movie. Anyway, Tony Story five still in theaters. Yes. Well, I went and saw. Well, I streamed The Furious. Was it Kelly? Were you the one who recommended it or was it Eric? I think we both saw it. Yeah. We both loved it. That is like the perfect Father's Day movie. I will say that movie. It was great. It was like absolutely incredible. It has actually one of the stunt performers from Paper Tigers. He plays the big like dumb son that he's so like athletic. And also he reminded me a lot of Channing Tatum and White House Down where he was just moving way too quickly. And he had this almost sort of gorilla style of fighting as in like actual gorilla, not like in the woods going to get you. Well, I guess the animal, the animal gorilla style of fighting. And it was so cool and so incredible looking. And yeah, I just I absolutely adored this film. I thought it moved really quickly. It was just stunning to look at the children. You know, I didn't I didn't have to cry a bunch, which is great.

[01:10:00:07 - 01:10:18:11]
Aside from they were probably all tortured and treated horrific horrifically before the movie started. But other than that, we'll just pretend like that's not the case. So what what is that streaming on? Oh, I think I paid for a rental. So rental. Okay. Yeah, I think so. I think lots of places.

[01:10:19:17 - 01:10:42:20]
Yeah, that's that's it's so good. I really want people to see that. I agree. I think if anybody likes martial arts movie at movies, action movies, this is one that you absolutely have to watch this year. I think I read somewhere that they spent three or four times as much time just choreographing fights and having fun than they did actually shooting the movie,

[01:10:44:00 - 01:11:09:05]
which shows. Yes. Wow. What threw me off, though, is it being in English? Because I just did not I just kept thinking, oh, I've got the wrong audio on. And then realizing, oh, no, that it's not only were they making it in English, they made one of the guys mute so that he had to not ever speak because he couldn't speak good English. And therefore, it was really cool.

[01:11:14:00 - 01:11:16:08]
I mean, well, I saw one that's still in theaters, I think.

[01:11:17:21 - 01:11:23:01]
But evil dead burn. I know was in line for the first night of this one.

[01:11:24:23 - 01:11:31:09]
How was it, Eric? I was directed by the guy who did what was it, arachnophobia or not? The right.

[01:11:32:21 - 01:12:10:06]
Yeah. Yeah. The right. No, we had the French spider. Yeah. The French spider movie that was on shutter. Overall, I liked it. It suffered from a little bit of the modern need to have deep, aggressively depressing family drama. Mm hmm. But overall, I thought it was fine. You know, a lot of the lot of this stuff I've seen of people against it seems like they probably started watching evil dead with army of darkness or maybe evil dead, too. And they associate with pure humor and Bruce Campbell.

[01:12:11:09 - 01:12:23:16]
And which I think for a long time, that's what it was. But I think it's going beyond that. I think they're starting to do interesting new things and opening up the world to what deadites can be.

[01:12:25:21 - 01:12:35:00]
I think I like I like the last one a little more, but I think this one was an interesting progression and Jesus, is it violent? Oh, my God.

[01:12:36:10 - 01:13:14:21]
Yeah, I I liked it also not as much as the last one, but I'm hearing everybody say, you know, oh, this one was 10 times better than the last one, which sucked. I was like, oh, I really like the last one. Yeah. So that's the building one, right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's really good. Here's my complaint about this. If you're going to give me an evil dead dog, I want that fucking dog to do something awesome. And they, you know, they infect the dog and then the dog just sits there with his glowing eyes for one scene. And that was pretty much it. I was like, this is bullshit.

[01:13:16:12 - 01:13:22:23]
So I've noticed recently, you know, for years, filmmakers kind of straight away from hurting animals.

[01:13:24:09 - 01:13:25:02]
 That is over.

[01:13:26:21 - 01:14:10:04]
Well, a lot of animal attacks and movies I've seen. I think it's still pretty, you know, I think it's still pretty safe to see an animal not getting hurt. I don't think many filmmakers like doing that because still so many filmgoers don't like seeing that. I don't like seeing that either. But if they had turned the dog into a monster and then we got to see, you know, something happened to him, I would have been fine. He does get, you know, he does get stabbed a lot, which is what turns him into the evil dead dog. So that was kind of hard. Yeah. But yeah, I think that's I think that's in theaters for like one more week as well.

[01:14:11:09 - 01:14:17:01]
So by the time you're listening to this, it's probably out of the. Yeah, that's the release. Yeah.

[01:14:18:02 - 01:15:57:01]
And that's the release window still is is 21 days. So so fucking shitty. Vanessa, I know you're going to run out and see that immediately. I will probably never see this movie ever. And that's fine with me. There are a lot of movies out there. I can I can accept myself for who I am and who I am is not a fan of the direction of the evil dead movies. And sure. Okay. No, I'm watching this thing. This is really fucking cool. And I want to tell everybody about it, but it's impossible to see right now unless you are not in the United States or you use a VPN to watch your streaming services. So you can find this on HBO in Australia and in, I think, British HBO and on something which is here available in the U.S., but I don't use that. Anyway, what I'm talking about is a series called The Killings at Parrish Station. And it is a TV show that is right up all of our alleys. It starts with a very bizarre series of murders at this at this station in somewhere in the outback or in the middle of nowhere. And it's got one of the huge dishes that's pointing up to the stars. And something has gone and driven the people there crazy. And the police show up and something happens.

[01:15:58:10 - 01:17:05:12]
So that that happens in 1987. Something happens to the lead detective who was a woman so that when we meet her again in 2024, she is in an asylum basically. And they are coming to talk to her because another series of the exact same kind of murders is happening in the city in Melbourne now. And the thing is, this thing is just dripping with season one of True Detective. It just feels like, you know, there's there's obviously some kind of very strange cosmic horror thing going on in the background of this. And I'm just like, well, on episode two, I'm like, boy, this is so good. I hope it doesn't shit the bed. But it's been out for a year over there. So I, you know, hopefully we'll get it over here sometime soon. Anyway, keep an eye out for it. It is called The Killings at Parrish Station. Oh, that sounds incredible. Show up as the killings in New York subway or something is a US remake of a British show.

[01:17:06:18 - 01:17:07:03]
 That's up.

[01:17:08:15 - 01:17:32:17]
Yeah, no kidding. Yeah, yeah, that looks super awesome. So the station is it like is it like a train station or a like what? No, it's one of those research stations. You know, it's got a huge satellite pointing up to the sky to the stars. Nice. Okay, cool. I'll definitely have to check that out if it ever shows up for streaming.

[01:17:34:00 - 01:18:40:16]
In the meantime, I'm still catching up and finally watched Ready or Not To. Um, Elijah Wood was such a delight in that movie. Oh my gosh. And what a great what a great addition to the lore to with him as basically the devil's lawyer. The devil's lawyer. He was just so good. I just really enjoyed that character. Having a bunch of other family members sort of against Samara Weaving and Catherine Newton was, you know, it was fun. I thought that they were really well cast as sisters. I think they did a great job as looking like and acting like they had some kind of connection. I think maybe the plot was a little over written for like whatever was going on with them. But yeah, it was it was a lot of fun. Um, I guess I probably could have spent more time with them playing the game before it becomes like a we've outsmarted you and now we're going to do this and then we're going to do that. And you know, it was it was good, but it was it was a little clunky in places, I think.

[01:18:42:12 - 01:18:59:21]
I love the addition of Sarah Michelle Geller. I'm not sure why we couldn't just get her live or real life husband in the role of her husband. I would have loved that. Well, this her twin brother was the guy. Oh, that's right. It wasn't.

[01:19:01:02 - 01:19:03:19]
Just felt a little felt a little weird.

[01:19:04:21 - 01:19:22:14]
And then that ending was pretty definitive. I was like, well, I don't think we're getting a part three. I can't imagine. I mean, I didn't think we were going to get a part two. But yeah, probably the third, the final chapter. Part.

[01:19:25:08 - 01:19:26:19]
Is that streaming for free now?

[01:19:27:22 - 01:19:34:13]
It is on Hulu. So, yes, you can finally finally check it out for free.

[01:19:35:15 - 01:19:36:00]
 Nice.

[01:19:37:07 - 01:19:52:03]
Well, in an unusual twist, I'm the one who's seen the stuff in the theater. Whoa, whoa. With the movie of the year so far, it seems in many ways, The Odyssey. Yeah.

[01:19:53:11 - 01:20:11:13]
Part of what was interesting in trying to get to see this, because I did want to do the IMAX. Originally, I was looking at Cinerama, but there was like one showing a day. Yeah. Seven p.m. Insane. That's interesting. Yes, I can't figure that one out, but we don't even have a real IMAX anymore, right?

[01:20:12:17 - 01:20:19:20]
Not the full one. I mean, boy, what a time for the Seattle Center to decide we're not going to show movies in IMAX anymore. They would have made a friggin mint.

[01:20:21:09 - 01:21:40:01]
The Seattle Center is showing. I'm confused by it because they are Pacific Science Center is showing it, though. Oh, I mean, yeah, I didn't see the. Yeah. So this is what my husband said to me as well. He was like, Oh, they're only showing weird documentaries. So I went to their website. Their website is a piece of crap and you have to go and click like a specific button. And then it shows you the normal films they're showing. But it's like it's not obvious to get to. So maybe maybe it is playing. I haven't been to it since it's been revamped. So I don't know if there's an issue with it or not. But that's they said they're going to stop showing regular films, but I don't know what the time frame was for that. Anyways, so I eventually settled. I did get an IMAX at least. And I kept looking and looking and they are. Hacked. Yeah. So I ended up finally going to an 825 a.m. Screening. Nice. And it was also packed. Yeah, there was a couple hundred people in it's a big theater. A couple hundred people in there watching is going. Damn, it was weird walking into the theater at eight o'clock and there's dozens of people walking all over the place like this is cool.

[01:21:41:06 - 01:21:41:18]
 So.

[01:21:43:01 - 01:21:45:04]
So I think it's going to continue to do well.

[01:21:46:11 - 01:22:11:20]
Yeah, especially when you like you said there's only so many places to see it. Yeah. Well, it's playing at other theaters too. So it's not just not just not am I. Yeah, you can see it in other formats. Did you like it, Eric? I thought it was freaking amazing. Absolutely fantastic. I actually have never read The Odyssey or The Iliad.

[01:22:13:05 - 01:22:34:16]
Or if I did, I was a junior high or something. So I remember it. So I mean, you always kind of know that you know this story because you've lived in this world. You've gone to school and stuff. So you kind of know a lot of the names and you know a lot of the story, you know, the Cyclops and you know, things like that.

[01:22:35:19 - 01:22:43:21]
But it's such an epic tale. I'm a little surprised it was under three hours. Not by much.

[01:22:45:03 - 01:22:58:06]
But like a few minutes. I figured it was going to be a three and a half hour film at least. But I thought the progression of stuff and the things like that and

[01:23:00:08 - 01:23:01:21]
doing so much of it real.

[01:23:03:06 - 01:23:09:00]
The Cyclops and the boats and all that stuff. I saw the Avengers new trailer. I'm going.

[01:23:11:08 - 01:23:18:16]
Doesn't quite work as well as it did 20 years ago anymore. We're just sitting in a green screen and we're recreating everything for

[01:23:19:18 - 01:23:22:14]
about a hundred million dollars more than he spent on The Odyssey.

[01:23:23:15 - 01:23:25:18]
Marvel movies are insanely expensive now.

[01:23:27:00 - 01:23:41:22]
Yeah, that's because there's 20 A-listers in them. Yeah. So that's true. This was, there wasn't a lot of people that were A-listers in this. You had Matt and then.

[01:23:43:06 - 01:23:46:06]
Tom Holland. Tom Holland. Robert Pattinson. And Deja.

[01:23:47:15 - 01:23:49:15]
 Robert Pattinson was great.

[01:23:50:21 - 01:23:55:00]
I thought Tom Holland, he was a little miscast.

[01:23:57:09 - 01:24:41:19]
And to be honest, I thought Matt Damon was a little miscast if we were going to actually tell the story of The Odyssey. I hate to say it. I would have put Ben Affleck in that role because the story of The Odyssey is not this story of a man with PTSD and all that. It's a man who, who's hubris gets him into trouble and they cut that stuff out of this version. So like when he, when he goes and shoots the Cyclops after they've escaped in the story, he basically says, hey, tell him Odysseus was here. You fucking asshole. And that's how the gods all find out that this guy is doing this. And that's why they kind of punish him for all of this.

[01:24:43:19 - 01:25:19:17]
But for, for this story that he wanted to tell about a man who was tired of war, you know, the Matt did a really good job. I thought it was really, really good. Also Tom Holland, I thought was miscast, but I am going to blame that on fucking Nolan for, I don't know if he wrote it this way or he allowed him to call his, his mom and dad, mom and dad, you know, every time he said dad's coming back. I was like, fucking that word is only a couple hundred years old. Yeah.

[01:25:20:23 - 01:25:36:08]
And same thing with mom, you know, mother and father is how we should have spoken back that it had just, it just drew me out of the movie every time he said it. And he said it enough times. And I was like, why, why was this the choice that, you know, my dad's coming back?

[01:25:37:11 - 01:25:41:17]
So I, especially for a 35 year old man to be saying,

[01:25:43:12 - 01:25:49:23]
I guess it's the, the reworking of a film of a, well, of an imaginary story

[01:25:52:00 - 01:25:56:12]
in which the whole lot of people aren't Greek and a whole lot of people aren't.

[01:25:58:22 - 01:26:29:01]
Nobody, yeah. The accents changing and all that stuff. And I mean, different people, not the, not the individuals. It wasn't like a Q and a reason Dracula or anything. Oh, yeah. The actors not being Greek. Yeah. So I, that didn't bother me. I just went with what he had created and what was going forward. So all the things that people were losing their minds about before they saw it, like everybody does on every casting decision anymore. Yeah. Didn't bother me at all.

[01:26:31:07 - 01:27:07:07]
The little surprise it's in, Diya getting some shit because I thought she was quite good. I thought everyone was, was really good. Um, Charlize Theron, I thought was a little, for whatever reason, understated. I was like, I want a little bit more out of her because we know what she can do. Yeah. Robert Pattinson in a villainous turn, I was like, this is the rules. This guy is supposed to be playing because I do think he's a handsome guy, but he's handsome in a very cruel way. Yeah. Especially as he's aged, he's more into that.

[01:27:08:19 - 01:27:11:07]
Yeah. Christopher Lee kind of good books.

[01:27:12:12 - 01:27:16:00]
So he, but I thought he was really well cast.

[01:27:18:05 - 01:27:26:14]
I'm blanking on the name of the blind servant, um, who was an actor I absolutely hate and thought was brilliant in this. Oh, I thought this was in The Hulk.

[01:27:28:03 - 01:27:46:21]
No, not The Hulk. Um, he was in To Wong Fu and he was in Spawn as the Clown. Um, let's see. John Legazima? There you go. Thank you. John Legazima.

[01:27:50:23 - 01:27:52:11]
 You may, you may use.

[01:27:55:06 - 01:27:55:19]
 Yeah.

[01:27:58:04 - 01:28:20:00]
Well, I'm excited to get to see it. I'm trying to see if I can get to it this weekend and get to one of the other center almost screenings because I really want some chocolate popcorn. The that's kind of driving the whole like what theater I'm going to go to. The, the giant image and partially the way he shot and we're on.

[01:28:21:01 - 01:28:46:17]
I don't know how this movie is cut down to a smaller frame in some of the scenes. But the, and, but this, and the sound was damn rattling the seat kind of stuff. It was, I saw some comment on it where somebody was like, I don't care. I'm just going to watch it on my phone. It's just a movie. And I just want the story. That's fine. You can get that by watching on the phone, but let me tell you, you will get a lot more.

[01:28:47:21 - 01:28:51:23]
If you're able to go out and check it out on a giant screen, which I know there aren't a lot.

[01:28:53:00 - 01:30:32:10]
There's about 41 screens. I can actually show it in full 70 millimeter meters or something. Well, not everybody cares that much, but like seeing Dune in like an IMAX screening with the amazing sound design, I was like, I don't think I, it's not the same movie without the way that the music is like vibrating through your bones. There's just something about it that some, some movies, if you can see them big, it's worth it. Yeah. Did you see that the hashtag as Nolan intended was trending and it was always, it was all these pictures of people watching the Odyssey on like the screen of their, their refrigerator or, you know, you know, on shit like that. And I thought that was pretty funny. I was kind of, I think Christopher Nolan is an amazingly talented director and actually a little more after seeing it than I did before. So I was kind of, maybe I'll see it, but then I saw an interview with him and his love of film and the idea of what he's doing and the way he makes it and how much it matters to him and how interested he is to be, for lack of a better term, an artier of filmmaking was like, his passion was so strong and so interesting gone. Okay. I got to see this as close to I can get away with.

[01:30:34:18 - 01:30:37:06]
Yeah. It's, I mean, it's definitely a spectacle in it.

[01:30:38:14 - 01:31:29:09]
It certainly is going to bump him up in the level of, of his quote. I'm guessing now that he is open even bigger than Batman begins with this. Yeah. I'm pretty stoked about it too, because I feel like the last movie with Tenet, he was so misserved because it came out during COVID and it just was such a weird, like film and it just really like bombed in so many ways. Was that Tenet? It, Oppenheimer as well though. Yeah. Oh, I guess he did have Oppenheimer after and that did really, really well. You're right. You're right. So he has had a little time to build up his reputation, but I just, yeah, I really like him a lot. I, not every film has resonated with me like completely, but I like that he swings big and hard.

[01:31:30:19 - 01:31:43:12]
Yeah. That's, you know, I did not know an IMAX camera, 70 millimeter camera. That's three minutes of film, her cartridge. Oh, yeah.

[01:31:45:18 - 01:32:00:10]
I remember hearing something from Tom Holland talking about like how weird it was to have to film these like bite size scenes. Like, okay, we're done next. Next we're going to load it back up again. Like, Oh, okay. Wow.

[01:32:02:20 - 01:32:08:13]
Well, okay. That's the Odyssey still in theaters, obviously, and probably going to be for the next three months.

[01:32:09:21 - 01:33:27:16]
We'll push back a little bit on your, on your doomsday trailer thing. I thought that looked like a lot of fun. And I got almost a little misty eyed when we saw Steve Rogers holding Thor's hammer. I was like, what? Okay. Fuck. Yes. I'll go with the idea of like, you know, the one guy with the iPhone comment. This looks like it could be a really neat movie, but there's just scenes and shots. I'm going, man, I hope this isn't the final effects shot. It's just, you know, the trailer came out before they could complete some of this background or something. Cause it just had some weird looks, but now the movie looks pretty damn fun. Yeah. I think it's going to be really fun. And I think that, um, there's an interesting choice in there by having a lot of X-Men and zero Eternals. I think my theory with the expense stuff is that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are going to die real soon. So if you want to use them, you better fucking use them now. Like now the Eternals kind of flopped as if the Eternals, well, they're just as characters way too OP for any situations. Like they're literally gods. It's like the cosmic Marvel. Like, I don't know how this meshes with the rest of the stuff.

[01:33:29:02 - 01:33:34:05]
It was a strange choice to put them in the Marvel universe and then, and then just go,

[01:33:35:15 - 01:33:36:01]
 get out.

[01:33:37:16 - 01:33:39:17]
Whoops, the noodle. Don't worry about it.

[01:33:41:02 - 01:33:44:21]
Just, hmm. I guess we made a mistake there.

[01:33:46:16 - 01:33:56:02]
Well, why don't we take a little break guys? When we come back, we are still on our Mad Maxathon and we'll be talking about Fury Road.

[01:34:32:07 - 01:34:34:05]
 And we are back gang.

[01:34:35:20 - 01:34:48:08]
We're on movie four of the Mad Maxathon Fury Road. I swear to God, I did not plan it so that I got the best movie of the series, but you did. I got the best movie of the series.

[01:34:51:04 - 01:34:56:06]
We were talking about Fury Road 2015 directed by George Miller.

[01:34:59:22 - 01:35:06:02]
In this wasteland, I'm the one who runs for both the living and the dead.

[01:35:07:10 - 01:35:09:22]
A man who reduced to a single instinct.

[01:35:14:01 - 01:35:14:15]
 So, survive.

[01:35:19:06 - 01:35:21:13]
 It is by my hand.

[01:35:24:12 - 01:35:33:04]
You will rise from the ashes of this world.

[01:35:38:13 - 01:35:44:00]
We are not things. We are not things. Where is she taking them?

[01:35:56:08 - 01:35:59:03]
I want them back. They're my property.

[01:36:04:01 - 01:36:06:12]
Oh, what a day. What a lovely day.

[01:36:08:12 - 01:36:12:17]
Want to get through this? Let's go.

[01:36:34:21 - 01:36:40:00]
As the world fell, each of us in our own way was broken.

[01:36:41:12 - 01:36:43:19]
It was hard to know who was more crazy.

[01:36:46:18 - 01:36:49:21]
 Me or everyone else.

[01:37:20:19 - 01:37:28:08]
Written by George Miller and Brandon McCarthy who wrote three episodes of something called "Reboot."

[01:37:31:03 - 01:38:10:23]
And then he's an art director of some renown. Also Nick Lathuras who wrote "This, Then Furiosa, Mad Max, and Then the New One That Still Not Out, Mad Max a Wasteland." Written by the same screenwriter. Starring Tom Hardy as, literally as Max Rakatansky, putting to rest the theory that he is not Max. As soon as the credits roll it says "Tom Hardy as Max Rakatansky." I was like, okay, so this is a reboot. It's pretty hard on your boot actually.

[01:38:13:06 - 01:38:19:18]
You know, if you like Tom Hardy, you've probably seen him in Venom, Peaky Blinders, Inception. He was Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.

[01:38:20:18 - 01:38:28:19]
Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa. You may know her as possibly the most beautiful woman on the planet.

[01:38:30:02 - 01:38:33:18]
She was in Children of the Corn 3, Urban Harvest.

[01:38:35:14 - 01:39:09:22]
The Devil's Advocate, Monster, Prometheus, Atomic Blonde, and a ton of other movies. Nicholas Holt, who always surprises me that he's in this because he's unrecognizable. Completely shocking. I was like, oh my God, that's right. Nicholas Holt was in this movie. Yeah, he was Hank McCoy in the X-Men films. He was in Warm Bodies, The Menu, Renfield, Masperatu, and he is playing Lex Luthor in the new Superman movies. And also in this is Hugh Kiesburne, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keogh, and a cast of what appears to be thousands.

[01:39:11:01 - 01:39:50:10]
A lot of human beings in this movie. They just scooped up Australia and went, all right, everybody, it's time. A Mad Max movie is happening. Everybody show up way up here. If I know we were going to be doing this by Zoom, I would have made these words bigger on this page. So right off the bat, you can tell there's a pretty solid reboot of the Mad Max saga. It starts with a very long shot of Earth that zooms into Australia for the first time, getting that down. And we start getting the news reports and images of nuclear holocaust. The world has become a desert wasteland and civilization has completely collapsed.

[01:39:51:20 - 01:40:28:13]
When we meet Max, he is in, you know, you can't even call it the wasteland now. He's just in a desert with weird cliffs and canyons and stuff like that. This would be even further along than Thunderdome would have been because there's almost no roads or anything left anymore. Right. So he's also when we meet him dealing with some pretty heavy PTSD because throughout the movie, he gets flashbacks of a young girl that we think might be his daughter we failed to save and an old woman who might be part of a group of people he was supposed to help at one point.

[01:40:30:09 - 01:41:03:20]
The other thing is that as we go through this movie, the cars are even older than the cars that were in Mad Max. They're from the fifties and everything. But the technology of the wasteland fortresses are further along than we have right now. So however this worked out, I don't know, it's just some kind of magical, you know, apocalyptic wasteland that just looks really cool. And he went, what if this cool thing was doing this cool thing in this movie? Yes, that's basically all this is.

[01:41:06:13 - 01:41:20:11]
Max is basically immediately set upon and captured by the war boys and his cars flipped and pretty much demolished. And I remember seeing this in the theater and going, that's all we get to see the fucking car. God damn it. This movie is going to suck.

[01:41:21:16 - 01:41:34:20]
I also had that moment. I read watching it going. Are you kidding me? We finally got this goddamn car back and now it's gone already. Thanks. Yeah. Yeah. Spoiler alert. This movie does not suck.

[01:41:37:05 - 01:41:57:13]
Max is brought back to the Citadel, one of the fortresses of the wasteland, one of the three fortresses of the wasteland. What's going on here is so far advanced that the water production there is is off the charts. I'm not sure where they are getting this water or how they are making this water, but they have it.

[01:41:58:19 - 01:42:15:00]
It's obviously not coming. So so the Citadel is a huge tower. Think of like Devil's Tower, right? And the water comes from the top of it. They're pumping the water up to that cliff and then reading it down in little bits and drabs on the people below.

[01:42:16:18 - 01:42:50:06]
So, yeah, not very efficient, but sure looks wild. It is not efficient. It just really shows you what an asshole and Morton Joe is who runs the Citadel. He parses out the water very sparingly to the four survivors who are barely living at the base of the Citadel at the Citadel. Max's hair is shaped and his vital information is tattooed on his back, his blood type, that kind of stuff. They label him as a road warrior. I don't know if you saw that in his tattoo. And I thought that was amazing. It went by really quickly. I was trying to I was like, oh, what does it say?

[01:42:51:14 - 01:43:16:06]
Well, and the big thing they want to show you is that he is a type O blood donor. So he's a universal blood donor, which becomes important. But as it starts, he is basically imprisoned. And for the purposes of this story, he will be used as a blood bag is what they call him for a sick war boy called Nux.

[01:43:17:12 - 01:43:30:13]
We're also introduced to him. Period. Imperator Furiosa, who is one of Joe's lieutenants. We know she's badass because her hair is shaped bald. She's got engine grease over half of her face and she has one super cool mechanical arm.

[01:43:32:02 - 01:44:13:12]
She is being sent in her war rig, which is an armored semi truck that trades produce and water for petrol and ammunition with the other two fortresses of the wasteland. But she has got something up her sleeve, gang, because she's acting a little cagey when we meet her. And as she drives off, she's got all of her entourage, the war boys and everything that are supposed to be protecting her. She she goes off the road that they have and nobody seems to know what she's doing, but she's in charge. So they come up and they're like, hey, boss, we got new orders or something. She's just like giving them looks and they're like, all right, do whatever she says. So that's kind of fun.

[01:44:18:04 - 01:44:37:06]
But what what a more Joe realizes when she goes off route is something is up. And so he runs down and finds out that his five brides, his five wives have been kidnapped by her basically. And this is the real story. It's just Joe leading his entire army in pursuit of Furiosa.

[01:44:38:06 - 01:44:44:12]
And then he calls on the aid of nearby Gastown and the bullet farm, which are the other two fortresses.

[01:44:46:11 - 01:44:51:23]
Nux joins this pursuit with Max strapped to the front of his car to continue supplying blood.

[01:44:53:06 - 01:45:10:07]
The art design of this film is fucking amazing. These cars are so cool looking. They're so far removed from even the Road Warrior cars. They've got Volkswagen bugs with huge spikes sticking out of them. You know, they look like weird fucking animals and cars that eat Paris.

[01:45:11:15 - 01:45:23:17]
An homage to that movie. A Australian film. And Morton Joe's Cadillac is like a double decker Cadillac with gigantic. It's just amazing.

[01:45:25:02 - 01:45:37:12]
And then we just get amazing stunt after stunt with these vehicles and Furiosa's war rig. And that's before we even get to the post-apocalyptic lightning filled sandstorm, which is the climax of the first chase.

[01:45:38:12 - 01:47:04:00]
Max is caught up in the storm also, but he manages to finally free himself and get to the point where he is facing Furiosa. This is a fair amount into the movie, and we haven't really been even able to see Max's face very well because he's wearing a cage. So it's pretty wild that the lead character is covered up for much of the movie. But it doesn't matter because he also only says about six words of dialogue in this film. Furiosa says anything throughout the film, and it's really wild. I know you're about to jump into it, but that first fistfight with Furiosa and Max is so well choreographed between utilizing the fact that he has a cage on his face. With a chain attached to it. Yeah, with a chain and a door and a kid attached to it. And he's fighting. And every time she just whomps him so hard, it's like, oh, he's not out because he's got a cage around his face. You're like, oh, OK, that's good writing. It really is. I mean, when you take into account, this is already about 40 minutes into the film when this happens. And you're not bothered that Max has been a prisoner most of this time and tied to the front of a car because there's so much action going on. Still feels very Road Warrior movie. Yeah, for sure.

[01:47:06:14 - 01:47:17:15]
So he does finally get a freeze himself of this cage and he's kind of forced into joining up with Furiosa and the fleeing wives because otherwise he's going to land in the middle of the army of vehicles that is chasing her.

[01:47:19:09 - 01:47:23:16]
So he helps them, gets into the truck with them and he's driving for them and everything.

[01:47:24:21 - 01:47:37:12]
From here, we get into another big set piece in the form of a chase scene that is really just as thrilling as the first one with motorcycles and men on poles and parachutes on cables that they're pulling behind them.

[01:47:38:13 - 01:47:55:15]
They're throwing Molotov cocktails on top of the war rig and all that. It's it's it's so cool and everything there, but there's so much happening. There's really not a lot of time to think, boy, the plot of this movie is razor fucking thin.

[01:47:57:23 - 01:48:00:07]
They really don't care that much about the story.

[01:48:02:01 - 01:48:12:12]
It's all about the chases. It really is. And then, of course, this chase ends with the unfortunate death of one of the wives who was pregnant with a Mordenjoes child.

[01:48:14:07 - 01:48:24:19]
Furiosa explains some acts that they are escaping to the Green Place, which I like to think is from Beyond Thunderdome, where all the kids were. I know. It kind of feels like it.

[01:48:26:10 - 01:48:30:04]
Although, of course, once we get into the next movie, we find out that's not it. Anyway.

[01:48:33:19 - 01:48:42:04]
Furiosa has come. That was the land that she came from when she was a child. But they also find out that Nux has managed to sneak aboard the war rig.

[01:48:43:12 - 01:49:32:09]
But he is distraught over his failure to stop them and kill Max. And this seems to be enough to switch him over to their side when one of the brides shows him like the smallest amount of kindness. So the thing with these war boys is they are ready to die at a moment's notice for a Mordenjoes. There's just like I said, the movie, the plot is razor thin, but the set pieces are just fucking gorgeous. They have a night scene where they are stuck in the mud and it is shot day for night. And if you know that, you can absolutely tell it shot day for night because all he did was was put a blue filter over it and bump up the shot. And then they just shot in the middle of the day and it looks amazing.

[01:49:34:12 - 01:50:44:08]
You know, one time that you can tell there is a little bit of digital work, though, because every once in a while the camera pans up a little bit. You can see stars in the sky. So they obviously did some kind of stuff like that. But it reminds me of this one time I was teased mercilessly in some Facebook film group when they were all discussing what the best day for night options were. And I suggested this film and everyone was like, that doesn't look anything like nighttime. I'm like, you guys are a bunch of fucking assholes. I thought I was sitting here with artists. Jesus Christ. You want it to look like nighttime? Well, then nobody's going to be able to see anything. You fucking kidding. I would have gone with the opening of the fog, which is the worst. It's a terrible day for night. OK, anyway, they finally were scenario with where they meet a woman and find out that the green place is basically long gone. They pass it on the way there. And it was a swamp with another really cool thing of like these fucking people on still arms and legs. And it's just super creepy looking. Remind me a lot of like the dark tower or not that tower of the dark crystal. Oh, that is creepy critters. Yeah.

[01:50:46:13 - 01:51:00:05]
So anyhow, with the green place no longer an option, they decide they're going to switch to motorcycles and drive as far as they can in the hopes of finding their home. They offer Max a chance to come with them and he decides to stay behind. That's a pretty big deal.

[01:51:02:15 - 01:51:14:15]
The fact that, you know, Max comes into this as an antagonist to them. And by this time, they're just like, you know, you can come with us. You can come with us. You can come with us. You can come with us. You can come with us. You can come with us. And he's he's so broken that he's like, no, thanks.

[01:51:16:14 - 01:51:27:18]
But he then has another one of his PTSD visions of the child he failed to save again. And it comes to the conclusion that the only green place that counts as home is the Citadel, where they had all just escaped from.

[01:51:33:09 - 01:51:42:07]
And he said, everybody, come help me do this so they can get back to the Citadel before him. The thought is they can take it over and defend it from him.

[01:51:45:16 - 01:52:43:04]
With very little trouble, he convinces them to do a complete 180 and head back exactly the way they came. Surprising Joe and his army, busting through, killing Joe and getting to the Citadel. In this time, Nux has managed to sacrifice himself to block the way for the group. Furiosa is critically wounded and Max is able, as a universal blood donor, which we found out earlier, to transfuse his blood to her and help her survive her injuries. Now, he does this himself. We don't know how he has this kind of knowledge. They are suggesting that he was a police officer, but we are so far removed from whatever society could have been back then that he is not old enough to be. I know, it's wild. It's weird. I don't know quite how they're trying to staple this story into the previous acts. It just looks good. You're absolutely right. He was like, you know, nobody's going to really care about this. Tales of Max.

[01:52:45:02 - 01:52:50:02]
Yeah, 10 years in the future, some nerds are going to be discussing this on our podcast and they're going to go, wait, this doesn't make sense.

[01:52:51:04 - 01:53:44:04]
They end up back at the Citadel. The impoverished citizens are overjoyed at the site of Joe's corpse. Furiosa is cheered by the people and welcomed back to by the war boys. And Max disappears in the crowd, but not before letting Furiosa know that he approves of everything that has happened with a small nod. That'll be big. Yeah. Now, if they hadn't introduced him in the trailer as Max Rakotansky, he doesn't tell her his name through the entire movie until he's saving her and trying to keep her alive. And he tells her, Max, my name is Max, which you realize what a big thing for him to kind of let somebody into his world. And if they hadn't introduced him as Max Rakotansky, then it makes complete sense that he could have been the the feral kid from the Road Warrior because it's almost like he decides his name is Max. Right then.

[01:53:45:17 - 01:54:25:16]
So they kind of have this weird like romance thing. They don't. They don't. And I'm really appreciative. But there's a few moments where he's like holding Furiosa's head and you're like, there's this weird connection that just suddenly exists that I was like, I don't. I didn't really read this developing into whatever this is right now, but I'm glad that I'm glad they didn't kiss and I'm glad they were still like, at the same time, warrior to warrior survivor to survivor thinking, you know, they've been through so much in the last two and a half hours that

[01:54:27:07 - 01:57:39:20]
a real a real affection has grown between them because they're they're very worried when either of them are. And it's hard, you know, so I didn't mind that so much and I and I like it because it shows I mean, we know because of his flashbacks that he is someone who has tried to help people before and failed. Yeah. But holy shit. What a fucking movie. I mean, watch this again. And I was like, wow. And I can't believe, you know, watching it on my new TV with color and all that stuff. I was like, can't believe there are people are like, you got it. You got to watch it in black and chrome, the black and chrome version. If you miss all of this gorgeous scenery and the one of the best parts to me is during that lightning storm where when they're in the in the big, big storm and every time the lightning flashes, it goes fully black and white. And then when it comes back, it's color and the way they play with that, you would completely miss it in the Chrome edition. Like it's so cool looking. My biggest disappointment with that was as stylized as the color is and it's cranked up. The the black and white just looks like a black and white movie. You know, I thought when it said chrome and all that, that the the white would almost be silver and the black would be crushed black. And it would just that stylistically, it's just a black and white movie. So I thought the color all the way. So I am so glad this is one of those sauna theater films because it is epic. And it's you know, it's one of those few moments where a director who starts with a nothing budget is given, you know, many, many years later, a huge budget and it so pays off. And that's so rare to be like this person who basically just made a movie for some beers is now got millions and millions of dollars behind him. And he's using every penny so well. Yeah, not only that, but you mentioned that, you know, we've talked about how he paid some of the actors or some of the stunt people in beers and stuff like that. Max Mel Gibson only got $10,000 for that first movie. And the guy who's playing a Morton Joe was the toe cutter in that first movie. So he's still, you know, recycling some of his actors and that that's kind of neat. I remember loving this movie when I saw it in the theater. And but I also remember my great being Jesus Christ, you know, they basically it's just a chase to one point and then a chase back to the beginning. Yeah, but on this watch, watching it with a more critical eye, you realize that there is a ton of story going on and it is all between Max and Furiosa. The story is not anything that's going on in the outside. It's all there in the cabin of the truck as as they're connecting and all this stuff. And this time I was just like, holy shit. I mean, Charlize Sanon is just fucking killing it in every frame of this movie. She is asking her ass off. And I got to admit, Tom Hardy, I love him as an actor, but I always have to like,

[01:57:41:21 - 01:59:01:02]
qualify that statement is like, you know, I I didn't love him in this. His his twitchy Max is not my favorite kind of Max and the fact that he's got six lines of dialogue and that he's that he's so broken. You know, he's decided to play it with a with a kind of kind of weird, you know, I'm out of it. Yeah, I think that that was my least favorite part of the movie was like his flashbacks, because they're all like, like, was it like Smash Zoom style, like weird flashbacks, film, they don't really add much to me. And it just feels irritating every time it happens. And it happens so much. So it really doesn't. I think it detracts from that character for me. There's there's one brilliant use of it. And I think the other ones have to happen to show that he is affected by these things, because at one point during a big fight, he has a sudden flashback, and he puts his hand up because he's scared of the flashback. And that's right, as somebody has shot an arrow at him, and it goes through his hand and into his head a little bit. He has to actually pull his hand off of his head. Yeah.

[01:59:02:07 - 01:59:14:12]
There's also the movie comes with its own soundtrack truck. That's really bad. The dude for you. So cool. Also, I don't know if you guys notice this.

[01:59:15:15 - 01:59:31:17]
The narration at the beginning is Max, which this is the only film that that has happened. Max. Oh, that's true. Yeah. I live to other people. Yeah. So, OK, you guys ready for some of this trivia? Yeah.

[01:59:33:09 - 01:59:57:12]
Over 80 percent of the effects seen in the film are practical effects, including stunts, makeup and sets. CGI was used sparingly mainly to enhance the landscape, remove stunt rigging and for Furiosa's left arm, which is a mechanical prosthetic that doesn't make a ton of sense because the fingers move. And you're like, how is she controlling that hand? But I'm fine with it.

[02:00:00:05 - 02:00:04:16]
The gesture made by the war boys when they mesh their fingers together.

[02:00:07:00 - 02:00:09:09]
That's the that's the sign of the V8.

[02:00:10:09 - 02:00:12:21]
 That's a V8 engine they're making with their fingers.

[02:00:14:12 - 02:00:20:04]
They like tomato juice. I thought this was weird. You fucking nerd.

[02:00:21:14 - 02:00:24:01]
Why would I expect you to know what a V8 engine would look like?

[02:00:27:11 - 02:00:42:06]
When Max awakes abruptly from one of his dreams right after the blue nighttime sequence, the last image of his dreams is a close view of a guy with eyes popping out of his face. And that is footage from the original Max, one toe cutter scaled by the truck.

[02:00:45:17 - 02:00:55:02]
The girl who Max sees in his visions, which I thought was his daughter, is in fact, glory of the child who can be seen in the comic book series that was written by George Miller.

[02:00:57:04 - 02:01:01:14]
So there is a prequel comic book series that has those characters.

[02:01:03:06 - 02:01:21:07]
Is she the daughter in the comic or is she just a girl that she's just a girl with that old lady that he was trying to save? Oh, wild. OK. So we know, you know, everybody knows that Tom Hardy was kind of difficult on this shoot.

[02:01:23:09 - 02:01:33:14]
In a press conference at Cannes for the film, Tom Hardy apologized to George Miller for the reportedly complicated relationship between the star and the director.

[02:01:35:02 - 02:02:05:08]
He stated, I have to apologize to you because I got so frustrated. There was no way George could have explained what he could see in the sand when we were out there because of the due diligence that was required to make everything safe and so simple. And the only thing that I saw was a relentless barrage of complexities simplified for this fairly linear story. I knew it was brilliant, but I didn't know how brilliant until I saw it. So my first reaction upon seeing the film was, oh, my God, I owe George the biggest apology for being so loud.

[02:02:07:08 - 02:02:07:11]
 Thanks.

[02:02:08:13 - 02:02:09:00]
 Yeah.

[02:02:10:16 - 02:02:13:22]
Like the World Warrior, the film was shot in sequence.

[02:02:15:18 - 02:02:36:06]
Makes sense. Now, if the cars are getting destroyed and all that shit, so it doesn't, it doesn't, though, because you start in a spot and you end in a spot and you go through the canyon twice. It really should have been shot like location based, but that's you think so, except they've got to then block that canyon with a truck. And that's going to happen at the end.

[02:02:37:08 - 02:02:40:09]
This is one I thought was really interesting. And Vanessa, you're going to love this.

[02:02:41:12 - 02:02:46:14]
Margaret Sixsell is the editor of this film. She is George Miller's wife.

[02:02:48:05 - 02:03:00:19]
When she asked why he thought she should take on the project as she had never edited an action film before, Miller replied, because if a guy does it, it will look like every other action movie.

[02:03:02:03 - 02:03:03:09]
 Oh, cool.

[02:03:04:13 - 02:03:11:05]
And that's the data. What the fuck? She doesn't edit to that.

[02:03:12:14 - 02:04:20:21]
She received an Academy Award for it. So she chose correctly. Yeah, I would say it feels like a lot of people's wives or significant others end up editing famous incredible pictures. And I think it's because they have the ability to tell them, like, no fuck off, you're wrong. And that's so important when working with a director to be able to not be like sucking up to them the whole time, but to say, like, look, you have a vision, but I can make it better if you listen to me. And yeah, let's not discount the fact that they probably met in the editing room and then you sit there and struggle with a project together and get I'm assuming the other movies that are not action that she edited are his non action movies. Oh, I see. Okay, gotcha. So she it's not that this was the first time she ever edited in her life. No, it was the first action film she had edited. Okay, that she did a lot of stuff. She did Bade Pig in the City and the feet plus a couple of their films that I'm not familiar with. That's awesome.

[02:04:22:18 - 02:04:31:03]
Okay, guys counting the opening voiceover and discounting any grunts. Max Rakotanski has exactly 52 lines.

[02:04:35:05 - 02:04:42:09]
Let's see, Tom Hardy suffered a broken nose during filming when Charlize Theron accidentally elbowed him.

[02:04:45:00 - 02:04:58:19]
Oops. Yeah, the jacket worn by Tom Hardy is a replica of the one worn by Mel Gibson in the last two movies of the original trilogy. The original jacket was found in storage and they just basically reconstructed it.

[02:05:01:14 - 02:05:09:10]
Okay, on April 3, 2015, which is more than 10 years ago, Tom Hardy announced he had signed on for three more Mad Max films.

[02:05:11:13 - 02:05:28:11]
What? Yeah, yeah. Listen, this one will make your head hurt. This is the highest grossing Mad Max film with a worldwide take of 380 million. However, because of its expensive price tag and advertising budget, it ended up losing 20 to 40 million.

[02:05:29:14 - 02:05:33:12]
This is the first man that failed to turn a profit.

[02:05:34:13 - 02:05:51:22]
And then finally, Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy very publicly did not get along during the making of this film. Since then, both actors have publicly reflected on the grueling shoot and acknowledged that the immense pressure and fear of stepping into Mel Gibson's shoes caused them to put up walls rather than support each other.

[02:05:53:17 - 02:06:02:21]
They even noted that in hindsight, while Theron noted that in hindsight, they were functioning just like their adversarial characters whose relationship was all about survival.

[02:06:05:06 - 02:06:32:17]
Hardy expressed regret for his behavior, admitting that he was in over his head and that they, Theron, deserved a better and more experienced acting partner. He's also stated clearly that there is no hatchet to bury on his end, calling Theron one of the best actresses in the world and noting that he would gladly work with her again. I have no idea how she feels about working with him. Yeah, she's pretty classy. I don't know if she would like talk about it unless.

[02:06:33:18 - 02:06:54:10]
Yeah, that's crazy. That's I hadn't known that about Tom Hardy being difficult or that he and Charlize Theron didn't get along. Because especially during that fight sequence, you have to really trust the person you're working with to let them swing near you and. Or you break their nose. Or you break their nose.

[02:06:55:15 - 02:06:56:04]
 Oops.

[02:06:57:08 - 02:07:54:14]
But a lot of these times, we sit there and think about it and you're like, boy, it'd be hard to pretend to like somebody or anything. But you're an actor, you're getting paid a couple million dollars. You can pretend to like somebody. Yeah, you know, famously Harrison Ford and and what's her name and Blade Runner just fucking hated each other. They had to do a love scene together. So, you know, I think that you you can get past that. And in the hands of a good director, maybe it helps the film, you know, which is which is tough on the actors, though. Yeah, I can see why you wouldn't have a hard time grasping what was going on on a large scale. Yeah, you're not looking through the the camera angle. You don't see what the director sees and you have to put so much trust in them. And if you don't have that trust, then you're not going to know until you sit down in the theater.

[02:07:55:15 - 02:08:03:00]
Well, I think it's interesting that Max or that Hardy says that he signed down for three movies.

[02:08:04:02 - 02:08:29:21]
But Miller's first thing after this was not a Mad Max movie. It was a Fjord Hose movie. So he clearly, I think, liked working with Charlize their own better. It just took so long that they couldn't use Charlize. I have interesting points about that coming up in our next episode. But I'm going to jump back to just a second to one of the things you mentioned earlier about the color correction.

[02:08:31:20 - 02:08:53:01]
I thought it was pretty brilliant. And I think modern color characters, especially the lower budget ones, need to think about this kind of an approach because there's so much of that muddy green crap that's being used anymore. Because, you know, we want it to be real like night. It's like, you know, it's a movie light it so we can see what the hell's going on.

[02:08:54:03 - 02:09:04:17]
And give it a little bit of life. But which I think this does spectacularly. And I mean, the sandstorm colors just.

[02:09:07:10 - 02:09:58:06]
It's like, you know, I crank that up more, more, more, more. Knowing this time that that was how he had done the day for night, I paused it on one of the shots with the vehicle with the headlights. You know, so you have these bright white headlights and everything. And when you pause it, you can see that it's just painted on there. The white headlights are just painted digitally. And it's like, oh, this is so it's so stylistic that I you don't think twice about it. It is like, you know, this looks so bizarre that it's just part of the rest of this bizarre looking movie. I wish I could remember who said it, but I just read a great thing about lighting for night. And is the cinematographer was on a shoot. The guy's like, well, where's your point of light? You need to have a source for your light. He looked at him go, it's the same place the music is going to come from.

[02:10:01:05 - 02:10:01:11]
 Perfect.

[02:10:05:11 - 02:10:12:20]
Yeah, well, that was Fury Road, you guys. I OK, we've been ranking these as some easy one.

[02:10:14:12 - 02:10:20:11]
I'm putting, you know, in last place, unfortunately Thunderdome, which I still liked quite a bit.

[02:10:22:05 - 02:10:30:17]
Then Mad Max, then the Road Warrior and then in first place, Fury Road is just so good.

[02:10:31:21 - 02:10:35:05]
I was actually I remembered liking it.

[02:10:36:10 - 02:10:42:14]
And then I liked again going, I like this more than I thought I did. And I remember really liking it.

[02:10:44:01 - 02:10:57:02]
You know, who doesn't like this movie is Ted Dastic. Of course not. Ted, Ted, Ted. We need to have a Ted Duck. Oh, sorry. What was your ranking? That's because my match is Kelly's.

[02:10:58:02 - 02:11:36:01]
It probably matches Kelly's, but it's just so frustrating because like one, two and this one, I mean, all of them are so different. They have such different budgets. They have different styles. And even though they're all in the same universe with the same artistic like consistency, it still feels like not fair to compare them in some ways. I don't know. There's just something about it that makes me really like frustrated because I still love one in its own way and two in its own way and this one in its own way. And I don't care for three for its own reason.

[02:11:37:10 - 02:12:39:23]
But I don't like that in its own way in its own way because I don't like half of the film. But yeah, I don't know. It's tough. I guess I agree with your ranking, but it irks me to do so because I just I really think it's such a good series. It's just so so well made. On the Strange Eons Radio talk page, Bob had posted once we had I can't remember if it was this one or the last movie, but he had posted what you're talking about. It's like every time I watch these movies, I think the movie I'm watching is my favorite one. I believe they're all so good. So yeah, it just doesn't feel right. And you know, it's all by the same person, but like so far apart from each other. It's just yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But no, this is an incredible film. I mean, like I said, when you when you get somebody who has worked with zero budget, a huge budget and you get something this incredible, it's like, well, fuck, I guess you're awesome, huh?

[02:12:42:03 - 02:12:53:03]
You're good at what you do. Because sometimes that doesn't work out. You get somebody who's used to it more often than not. Yeah, I don't know what to do with $10 million, but I know what to do with a million dollars.

[02:12:54:03 - 02:13:53:11]
Exactly. One of the pieces that trivia I didn't put on there was, I guess, Mel, Mel Gibson was at the at the, you know, the premiere, the big huge red carpet premiere of this. And he sat next to George Miller. And George said, you know, he was a little nervous and everything. But then, you know, about halfway through, he could hear Mel kind of chuckling and everything that Mel was grabbing his leg, you know, squeezing it and going, this is so good. So that made George feel pretty good. I love it. So that's great. Yeah. Well, that means, Eric, that you've got the last film in this franchise. So far. So, who knows? There's the one supposedly in the video game or the comic or the thing is, George is getting pretty old. Now, this was already 10 years ago. And then your film was five years ago, I think. So, you know, and he's he's I think 80 now, maybe older.

[02:13:54:23 - 02:14:02:00]
I think a cure. Carousel was shot something like in his late 80s or something. Okay. But was he out in the middle of the Outback?

[02:14:03:19 - 02:14:35:14]
Explosion stunts. So yeah, I worry. Toxic sun rays. I worry. And also, I hope that if something happens and we're not given Mad Max, the wasteland, I hope somehow that script is at least leaked online so that it can be read by the fans. I agree. Comic book, a bit or something. Yeah. Yeah. Wouldn't that be great? I have the Beyond Thunderdome tie in.

[02:14:37:06 - 02:14:43:00]
I have not been able to secure the Road Warrior Mad Max. Those things go for about eight hundred dollars apiece.

[02:14:44:15 - 02:14:49:14]
But I'm a little surprised that we've got no Fury Road or a Furiosa novel tie in.

[02:14:51:06 - 02:16:38:12]
Very surprised, actually. Well, OK, so that's what we're going to do next week when we come back is the final movie in this franchise. Eric will be telling us all about Furiosa, a Mad Max SEGA or something like that. Yeah, the Mad Max World Stories. Yeah. Fable. So we can't wait to talk about that one. That means getting more at the point where we say, hey, thanks to everybody out there who's liking and sharing our posts, who's reaching out, leaving us messages, talking on these ironically, these strange eons radio talk page on Facebook, which is pretty much where I only hang out anymore anyway. And then also for calling the strange eons radio hotline, which is two five three two three seven four two six six Vanessa, if they call that number, what should they do? They should either text or leave a voicemail. Eric is standing by. Let us know what you think about the show. Let us know what you think about the movies we're talking about. If you have any suggestions and thoughts, we'd love to hear from you. So please get in touch with us. Hold on a second. That suggestions that that stuff you can email that suggestion to I'm not reading this all one word at nobody gives a shit.com. So we don't need your suggestions. We're watching our own shit. The good news is Eric will be reading it. So it's just fine and not Kelly. So I sneak it in as my. All right, gang. Well, any last words before we get off zoom and I go back and stick this fan directly in my crotch.

[02:16:42:05 - 02:16:46:07]
Stand in the freezer. Where you hide the movies you don't like.

[02:16:48:20 - 02:17:07:12]
We hide them in other people's freezers, not my own freezer. Let's be clear. All right. This is getting wildly off track. I love you guys. I'm sorry we didn't get to see each other in person. Hopefully next time. And then that'll be in two short weeks, I guess. All right. See you next time.
