[01:00:26:12 - 01:00:26:17]
Speaker 27
Thank you, Nolan.
[01:00:28:05 - 01:00:29:22]
Speaker 2
I appreciate you so much right now.
[01:00:32:12 - 01:00:38:00]
Speaker 2
Welcome to Strange Eons Radio. That is Eric over there. Hello. And that is Vanessa over there.
[01:00:38:00 - 01:00:38:16]
Speaker 4
Hello.
[01:00:38:16 - 01:00:43:07]
Speaker 2
With child. I don't know. Do we already know the name? Are we gonna mention anything?
[01:00:43:07 - 01:00:48:23]
Speaker 3
Um, I don't know if this is too public. This is too public. We'll wait until after and then we'll...
[01:00:48:23 - 01:00:50:12]
Speaker 2
Vanessa enter plus one.
[01:00:50:12 - 01:00:53:21]
Speaker 3
Yes, that's right. My additional, my sidecar.
[01:00:55:12 - 01:00:58:06]
Speaker 2
And I am Kelly. Hey gang. Eric,
[01:00:59:12 - 01:01:16:08]
Speaker 2
last week we got together. We have a friend named Joseph Skrimshaw who made a movie called Dead Media and he's doing like a roadshow tour with it. And we went to this and I was like, wait a second. Eric is running the Q&A for this. What the fuck? How did this all happen?
[01:01:16:08 - 01:01:33:12]
Speaker 1
Well, he's been doing a tour around the country for a little while. And Dead Media is this fun little indie film about watching movies on DVD. And anybody who remembers DVDs, you look for the little... I always got bored doing it, but you know people would put like egg, Easter eggs.
[01:01:33:12 - 01:01:37:12]
Speaker 2
A hidden Easter egg if you ran your cursor over a picture or something like that.
[01:01:37:12 - 01:01:37:21]
Speaker 4
Yeah.
[01:01:37:21 - 01:02:11:12]
Speaker 1
So this is about somebody finding that and it really going terribly wrong. Yes. But the Skrimshaw has been touring for quite a while. And I was thinking, I should contact him and have him come up here. And then two, three weeks ago I get a message from him and a guy I've worked with on festivals before saying, "Hey, you want to show, you want to help us promote this? We're showing it next week." I'm like, "Oh crap. Okay." And also it was the same night the 48 hour film people were showing their movies. So
[01:02:12:13 - 01:02:20:21]
Speaker 1
almost everyone I seem to like, "Hey, you want to go to this? Go, well, my movie is showing here." So yeah, you're going to go to that. I understand. But
[01:02:22:03 - 01:02:23:03]
Speaker 1
it's a
[01:02:24:06 - 01:02:27:15]
Speaker 1
theater, I forgot to name it because it just changed its name. It used to be the Ark Lodge.
[01:02:27:15 - 01:02:28:07]
Speaker 2
I know.
[01:02:28:07 - 01:02:40:18]
Speaker 1
Tanzvuri. Sounds close. Yeah, it's along those lines. And what a cool little theater, man. I mean, it's got three screens. It's sort of like the Hollywood theater, scrunched out.
[01:02:40:18 - 01:02:45:15]
Speaker 2
In Portland. Yeah. Yeah. I also felt like it felt a little bit like when
[01:02:46:17 - 01:03:01:23]
Speaker 2
the Ballard, the Bay Theater, I think it became the majestic. Yeah. When it kind of spruced itself up, it had a couple of screens and was fun. It is no longer a fun place to go see a movie. That was 25 years ago. I was just saying, it doesn't even exist anymore. Yeah, I don't think it does. I don't know.
[01:03:03:00 - 01:03:09:16]
Speaker 2
But it was a cool little theater. It kind of tucked in a nicer block down in South Seattle.
[01:03:09:16 - 01:03:10:00]
Speaker 28
Yeah.
[01:03:11:23 - 01:03:14:00]
Speaker 1
And Joseph was there and is a
[01:03:15:15 - 01:03:31:06]
Speaker 1
producer, tour manager kind of person. She was there and she's, they're both really cool, of course. Yeah. They knew Joseph was. And so put some stuff together, talked to a few people and had a screening. Yeah. It was fun.
[01:03:31:06 - 01:03:33:15]
Speaker 3
And is this the shorter feature?
[01:03:33:15 - 01:03:34:12]
Speaker 1
It's a feature feature.
[01:03:34:12 - 01:03:36:07]
Speaker 3
Nice. Way to go Joseph.
[01:03:36:07 - 01:03:41:04]
Speaker 1
I did like too that I think everyone there bought the book.
[01:03:41:04 - 01:03:47:00]
Speaker 2
Well, he had a really cool thing where he did, it's not done anymore, but he had a
[01:03:48:05 - 01:04:12:04]
Speaker 2
theater book for the movie. And I collect those. The last one I've got, I think is like from Dragon Slayer or something. And that was probably the last year they did stuff like that. It was mid eighties when they stopped doing that stuff. But you could go in and get a souvenir book of the movie you were watching and it had behind the scenes stories and images and stuff. And he put together one of these for his movie, which I thought was really kind of cool.
[01:04:12:04 - 01:04:36:17]
Speaker 1
Yeah. And he worked with the physical media advocate, I think is the guy's name, who has his own publication like that. So they worked together to do the fancy one. There's the giveaway one, which is really smart. There's two pages, at least two pages in there that said list your favorite, whatever, or draw something and then take a picture of it and post it on social media and tag.
[01:04:39:21 - 01:04:40:17]
Speaker 1
He's having a fun time.
[01:04:40:17 - 01:04:46:15]
Speaker 3
Is it only available to watch like through this roadshow or are they streaming?
[01:04:46:15 - 01:04:54:00]
Speaker 1
They do have a, this current leg of the trip is sponsored by their distributor. So they are
[01:04:56:00 - 01:04:56:23]
Speaker 1
doing this first.
[01:04:56:23 - 01:05:00:21]
Speaker 2
Yeah. He told me that it will be available on DVD as well.
[01:05:03:00 - 01:05:04:18]
Speaker 3
That's a brave act.
[01:05:06:05 - 01:05:25:16]
Speaker 2
So, but they will have a physical release and blu-ray and all of that stuff. So it was, it was a lot of fun. It was great to see Joseph. I haven't seen him in a couple of years. I remember him telling me when he was going to write this thing and he had like a very small window to write it. And I was like, wow, all right. I've never been able to, to write a screenplay in five days, but he did.
[01:05:27:01 - 01:05:47:18]
Speaker 1
And he also does something that as a filmmaker who's watched multiple films, shorts in theaters, he watches everyone. He stays through every screening to feel the audience reaction, which is really smart. But man, that must just, I don't, I don't know how does it, cause all these
[01:05:49:05 - 01:05:54:08]
Speaker 1
clue for filmmakers, if you ever made a movie, once you watch it, when you're done, almost all you see are the flaws.
[01:05:54:08 - 01:05:55:04]
Speaker 4
Yeah.
[01:05:55:04 - 01:05:58:19]
Speaker 1
And it's like, I would just think that dragged you nuts.
[01:05:58:19 - 01:06:09:11]
Speaker 2
I stopped attending our view links. I would show up for Q and A and then I would go to the bar to drink or something until the movie was over. And I don't want to watch this in front of people.
[01:06:11:00 - 01:06:11:01]
Speaker 1
So
[01:06:12:05 - 01:06:14:01]
Speaker 1
anyways, that was fun. It was a lot of fun.
[01:06:14:01 - 01:06:46:17]
Speaker 2
He's also really, a really personable guy, stand up comedian down in LA and he hosts one of the bigger Star Trek or star Wars podcasts. And so he's very comfortable on stage. And, and, you know, just a, just a neat guy. I love Joseph. So go out and see dead media while you can. Yeah. And it's fun in the theater. Yeah. Yeah. It was an intimate audience. He told me that that I said, I don't think it'll be as bad as you think. I know a bunch of people who are showing up for this. Two of them showed up.
[01:06:46:17 - 01:06:56:04]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Yeah. Similar with, similar for the people I got. Like I said, there's so many people at the 48 hour film festival that were the kind of people that
[01:06:56:04 - 01:06:59:07]
Speaker 2
go to the theater. And really enjoyed it.
[01:06:59:07 - 01:07:12:14]
Speaker 3
And I think there's a lot to be said though, for just making an event and then posting about it like that. Actually the social media presence itself has, even if not that many people are butts in seats, like it's still,
[01:07:12:14 - 01:07:16:12]
Speaker 1
you got a lot of shares on the Kirktown Seattle website, which has
[01:07:17:13 - 01:07:23:01]
Speaker 1
18,000 people or something. Yeah. It's got a pretty, pretty good reach. So nice.
[01:07:25:09 - 01:08:04:22]
Speaker 2
Let's talk about some of the other things we've seen. I saw Spiderman brand new day. Oh, is it a brand new day? I've heard good. It is a, it is an interest interesting way to reboot, because at the end of the last movie, Dr. Strange cast a spell that makes everybody forget he is Spiderman, but it also makes everybody forget that Peter Parker even really is a person. So he loses his, the love of his life and his best friend. And I was curious how they were going to run with this. It takes place like in real time, whatever, three years later, whatever that last movie was. And so you see a catch up of over three years and,
[01:08:06:01 - 01:08:23:02]
Speaker 2
and then it kicks in with this, this new villain, I guess, I don't know if it's worth saying who the villain is because it's a mystery until it came out, but it's not a mystery. If you follow any of the news stuff, we all know who this person is going to be going forward into the Marvel universe.
[01:08:24:17 - 01:08:58:18]
Speaker 2
I'll tell you, I, I liked it. I didn't love it. I thought it was, I thought it was really good, but I didn't think it was nearly as good as the first three movies. And that's weird to say is that we're already into the fourth Holland Spider-Man movie. So he's made it further than anybody else. He's talking about a, an exit strategy, which I will assume is Miles Morales, but this had a $355 million opening weekend. And I doubt that Marvel is going to let him get away. They're just going to throw so much money at him. He says, okay, for the next couple of movies.
[01:08:58:18 - 01:09:12:09]
Speaker 3
I don't think, yeah, I think he wanted the last one to be the last one. And I remember him distinctly saying like, Oh, I think I've done, but you know, I think so long as he gets to keep doing other types of films, he'll probably be fine to keep coming back as Spider-Man.
[01:09:12:09 - 01:09:14:11]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Do the Odyssey,
[01:09:14:11 - 01:09:30:23]
Speaker 2
The Problem is, you know, you, you sign these Marvel contracts for better, for worse. It's like a seven movie contract. And that includes like your Avengers showing and whatever else he's in. But I don't see him wanting to do seven more movies as Spider-Man. He's 30 now.
[01:09:30:23 - 01:09:32:15]
Speaker 3
Physically so taxing.
[01:09:32:15 - 01:09:35:04]
Speaker 2
Yeah. Yeah. He's in great shape.
[01:09:36:07 - 01:09:48:18]
Speaker 2
But you know, he got his start on Billy Madison and doing those flips. If you've ever seen his tryout video for Spider-Man, him doing all the acrobatics and then going, Oh, we can actually fake that part. We need to see if you can act.
[01:09:50:18 - 01:10:00:20]
Speaker 2
But, but that's got to be, but I know that he does a lot of his own, you know, stunt work and stuff like that. And if you're doing that for long enough, even when you're young, like 30, that's harder.
[01:10:00:20 - 01:10:04:14]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Not, not everybody's nuts as Jackie Chan or Tom Cruise.
[01:10:04:14 - 01:10:12:21]
Speaker 3
I've got a ticket to see it tomorrow at 9 30 in the morning. There you go. I can squeeze it in.
[01:10:12:21 - 01:10:21:14]
Speaker 2
Well, luckily for you, they're showing it in like 15 minute breaks at theaters. So like, like all 10 screens being taken up by,
[01:10:21:14 - 01:10:35:04]
Speaker 3
yeah, I can't believe that was pretty brave. Like some theaters were like, all right, we're going to go ahead and kick out the streets fine. And others were like, fuck Spider-Man. We're going to, I think, uh, cinema, um, uh, Sift downtown is still going to do Odyssey.
[01:10:35:04 - 01:11:26:22]
Speaker 2
Yeah. That makes sense. Yeah. Anyway, I thought it was really good. Um, it didn't have the, uh, so the title brand new day is from a Spider-Man arc. That is a very mystical kind of thing. And it's kind of a stupid thing to name it after because most fans don't like it. This is after Peter Parker has been married and Aunt May has died and all of this stuff. And then he makes a deal with Mephisto to start over. And it's kind of like a, wow, I'm going to bring a weird, what if, yeah, we're going to bring magic into the Spider-Man thing. I mean, it works with Dr. Strange, but then to have him completely erase all this stuff was a misstep. I thought that's not what this movie is. So I was like, why would you name it this? What a lot of fans hate this. Um, but it does make sense for the start over and it went in places I wasn't expecting.
[01:11:26:22 - 01:11:32:13]
Speaker 3
Did it feel like they, um, like aged him up properly, like made him adult?
[01:11:32:13 - 01:11:43:12]
Speaker 2
Well, yeah, cause we see this progression, but if we're really following it, he's probably supposed to be 21 now and he's 30 in real life. So,
[01:11:44:13 - 01:11:56:14]
Speaker 2
um, but he's got, he's got some cool stuff. He's turned his apartment into like a spider lair with computers everywhere and all that shit. So it's definitely worth watching for sure. In the theater, Spider-Man brand new day.
[01:11:56:14 - 01:12:09:04]
Speaker 3
Well, Spider-Man's been my favorite property out of the Marvel properties. So I'm, I'm super into it. Um, I'm also very happy. I managed to see in Lion-X, um, the Odyssey.
[01:12:09:04 - 01:12:15:17]
Speaker 2
What's Lion-Max? It's like when you're, liar, I'm actually not quite I'm at the screen.
[01:12:15:17 - 01:12:25:17]
Speaker 3
A little bit. It's cropped a little bit. Um, so most of the IMAXs and like the Regals or the AMCs or whatever, those are actually Lion-Max.
[01:12:25:17 - 01:12:31:07]
Speaker 2
Yeah. Then I know we only had one and I guess we still have it. You were telling us it was still showing.
[01:12:31:07 - 01:12:36:12]
Speaker 1
I was surprised when I went to the one where I saw it. I'm like, and it was a full IMAX. It was like,
[01:12:37:17 - 01:12:39:22]
Speaker 1
that's the real story. Whatever it's supposed to be.
[01:12:39:22 - 01:13:00:05]
Speaker 3
Mine looked pretty close. Mine felt like it was pretty close, but I, you know, like I assume there's some sort of dimensional thing that's a little bit off. Yeah. Um, yeah. And I did look at the Pacific Science Center thing further. Their main screen that is the proper, proper IMAX is only going to be for documentaries. The smaller secondary screen.
[01:13:01:12 - 01:13:05:06]
Speaker 3
So I didn't either. So they've got like a Lion-Max version as well.
[01:13:05:06 - 01:13:22:19]
Speaker 1
What a weird choice. Especially when you're a science thing that deals a lot with needing donations and sponsorships and stuff. Why not be one of the 41 theaters in the world that can show this the way everybody's going, we need to see it this way.
[01:13:22:19 - 01:13:23:23]
Speaker 3
What a stupid
[01:13:25:03 - 01:14:26:19]
Speaker 3
choice. Um, but, uh, you know what? Like it was actually a really fun screening. It was so loud that it was great because usually the big problem we run into is going to the movies you get total idiots, just the worst theater goers in AMCs and Wiggles and, um, cinematics that are just on their phone. They're like live, you know, tech, you know, live streaming or whatever, like with their grandma or whatever. And they're like sitting there talking all the way through the movie and it's intolerable when you've spent all this money and time to go. So, um, it was so loud and it starts off, I think I messaged you guys with this like bang of the staff on the, and all the people who were like in the halls, yes, are quieting down and listening. And that's exactly what happened in the theater. And I was like, Oh, thank you. Thank you, Nolan. I appreciate you so much. Thank you. I appreciate you so much right now. And we just, even if people wanted to talk, they could just be beautiful.
[01:14:28:03 - 01:14:34:13]
Speaker 2
Tell us how you, cause I know you are a stickler for story stuff. So tell us how you felt about the Milligan.
[01:14:34:13 - 01:14:43:08]
Speaker 3
Well, I, it's actually weird because I studied, it's actually weird because I studied, uh, Greek mythology, but never read the Odyssey.
[01:14:44:23 - 01:14:48:18]
Speaker 3
I think it was like, we're so advanced. It never came up. I think it was like, we're still advanced.
[01:14:48:18 - 01:14:50:12]
Speaker 2
You should have read this when you were 14.
[01:14:50:12 - 01:14:52:04]
Speaker 3
Yeah, totally.
[01:14:53:14 - 01:15:06:12]
Speaker 3
Like you definitely already read this. So we're going to skip it. Um, so it was really fun to watch the first, um, it wasn't even the first act, but the first portion of the film, I was like, this is so like,
[01:15:09:06 - 01:15:12:00]
Speaker 3
I'm in a row,
[01:15:14:11 - 01:15:26:18]
Speaker 3
blah, blah, blah. And I was like, and then they got into the more of a boy Harry house and style, like the more Roy Harry style, like crazy adventure, ridiculous, crazy adventure stuff. And that was so fun.
[01:15:27:19 - 01:15:38:17]
Speaker 3
So I knew the, I knew the way that the story was going to be strange. One of my favorite Greek, wild and strange stories, like one of my favorite stories is the Metamorphosis. So I was like, all right, go me in. What random stories are really here.
[01:15:40:12 - 01:15:43:00]
Speaker 3
I did laugh at the ending, which I
[01:15:44:09 - 01:15:47:21]
Speaker 3
will say what happens in case anyone doesn't know, but I
[01:15:48:23 - 01:15:49:09]
Speaker 1
actually
[01:15:54:06 - 01:15:56:00]
Speaker 1
just read the thing. I'm
[01:15:57:02 - 01:16:04:01]
Speaker 1
going to read the damn thing and I will say after reading it, I think Nolan did a great job of breaking it down.
[01:16:04:01 - 01:16:06:05]
Speaker 2
It's a tough thing to adapt.
[01:16:06:05 - 01:16:19:11]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Oh, there's so many, like you meet somebody and you get to learn their whole families and everything like that and all these stories about them, show up again. Whoever this person was ever again. The
[01:16:20:11 - 01:16:48:11]
Speaker 1
arrangement of the story is definitely not linear as the way things happen and when things happen. I got in there and gone, how much would take there's a part where I was like, what? Okay. How much is left? Cause he's now back at Ithaca and there's still like a hundred pages left in this thing going, oh, okay. I see what happens. It's going to go all over and it's still going to do all that all over the world. And it's just like, yeah, it's a, it's a weird, tough.
[01:16:48:11 - 01:17:05:18]
Speaker 3
There was a couple of stories that I was not as familiar with. I was really confused by like the slightly like that whole segment. I was very lost. I was like, I don't know.
[01:17:05:18 - 01:17:20:19]
Speaker 1
They're more giant. They're supposed to be more giant than, but I like the way I think the choices he made were fun thematically where he wanted, didn't want to do the effects. So, you know, he hired super guys who were like seven two and there's a
[01:17:22:09 - 01:17:24:22]
Speaker 1
woman that plays, um, it
[01:17:26:11 - 01:17:34:14]
Speaker 1
was like five foot something. And it's like, oh, that's wildly interesting. Yeah.
[01:17:34:14 - 01:17:41:21]
Speaker 2
That's a, it's the Peter Jackson force perspective, one of the ring stuff that, you know, if you shoot it, right, it works really well.
[01:17:41:21 - 01:17:46:08]
Speaker 3
Yeah. I thought it was beautiful. I think, yeah, I thought it was beautiful. I think that
[01:17:47:08 - 01:18:02:20]
Speaker 3
like, there were some really cool interesting choices going on. I think that everyone kind of knows at this point that there's a lot of PTSD stuff going on there that worked really well. Um, and the, the Trojan war stuff was so good. And using that war as like
[01:18:05:04 - 01:18:21:16]
Speaker 3
a pinpoint throughout to console, read address, like heroism, heroism, heroism, and then like the tragedy around it. I really liked that. So, um, overall a great film. I didn't feel the length really other than the fact that I was getting,
[01:18:21:16 - 01:18:24:20]
Speaker 1
oh, you didn't do an eight AM screening. Oh, that one.
[01:18:24:20 - 01:18:33:06]
Speaker 3
I was like, no one way to go to bed.
[01:18:34:10 - 01:18:37:21]
Speaker 3
My mom had the baby monitor next to her. I'm sure even if the baby was
[01:18:38:22 - 01:18:50:20]
Speaker 3
fine, somebody was in the house, but that's okay. Somebody was in the house. Uh, I was definitely tired by the time I got home, but I didn't feel like upset about it during
[01:18:50:20 - 01:19:30:16]
Speaker 2
a great film. No doubt. Still not my favorite. I went back and started rewatching the two night event that the sci-fi channel did with Armando Sante as Odysseus. And I was like, Oh, I was right. I remember thinking I liked this one better. And I started watching. I'm like, I do like this one. I think it's, I think it's just cooler looking and Armando Sante as a better Odysseus. And I did hear somebody complain about how, you know, this, this woke version doesn't, that cuts out the part you've read at the end of the Odyssey. He goes, he like kills all of the, why the wife servants and everything that
[01:19:31:17 - 01:19:47:20]
Speaker 2
were betraying him to his wife and all of this stuff. And they were like, you know, they didn't show that. They didn't show what a horrible person he was with that. I'm like, I also didn't show it in the version I love. And there was a 1962 guarantee that they didn't come home and kill all the servants. Yeah.
[01:19:47:20 - 01:19:50:00]
Speaker 1
No, that would just ruin the whole.
[01:19:50:00 - 01:19:50:14]
Speaker 4
Yeah.
[01:19:50:14 - 01:19:53:07]
Speaker 1
He goes from here to Villa real fast.
[01:19:53:07 - 01:19:53:12]
Speaker 3
Yeah.
[01:19:54:22 - 01:19:56:19]
Speaker 3
We have a very different idea.
[01:19:56:19 - 01:20:00:15]
Speaker 28
That people did perhaps a long time ago.
[01:20:00:15 - 01:20:04:01]
Speaker 3
People did a long time ago. So it's okay.
[01:20:04:01 - 01:20:24:05]
Speaker 1
It's okay. I mean, how many different versions and different styles have you seen? Romeo and Juliet. Sure. And that's not nearly as long ago. That's the Odyssey. Was I sure. Oh yeah. There's, it was Homer actually a real person is with the Odyssey now anywhere near if he was real, what he wrote or who's.
[01:20:25:05 - 01:20:35:22]
Speaker 3
Yeah. Based on how many stories is it combining based on how many stories is it combining? How many authors is it combining? It's crazy to. There's the stickler for like. It's crazy to. It's gotta
[01:20:37:01 - 01:20:39:13]
Speaker 3
be true. Like, yeah. All right. Go, go read any.
[01:20:39:13 - 01:20:40:11]
Speaker 2
So watch the movie.
[01:20:40:11 - 01:20:45:05]
Speaker 3
And then go. You can do that person. Feel free to be that person in the audience.
[01:20:45:05 - 01:20:49:02]
Speaker 2
The version I like a little bit on Tampi right now. Isabella Rossellini.
[01:20:50:12 - 01:20:50:22]
Speaker 2
What's her name?
[01:20:52:00 - 01:20:58:08]
Speaker 2
80s production. 90s. It's my Ben 2000. Even well, I don't know. Sci-fi channel. That was the height of that.
[01:20:58:08 - 01:21:05:08]
Speaker 28
Oh, it's sci-fi channel. Yeah. So we are. That was the height of that. Oh, it's sci-fi channel. Yeah. I think so. I've got one that was a movie,
[01:21:06:13 - 01:21:12:04]
Speaker 1
but a documentary. Iron Maiden's Burning Ambition. Fuck yeah. Yes. So good.
[01:21:13:09 - 01:21:51:04]
Speaker 1
So as you know, so at least partial 80s metal head. Everybody knows Prince thing, but fucking loved a lot of metal too. And Iron Maiden, one of the best. Yeah. And there was two albums that I listened to when I did most of my lawn mowing in the summer. Operation Minecraft and Power Slave by Iron Maiden. I like Power Slave by Iron Maiden. But this was great. This was as raw as you could be about this, being a fan of this group, but also these guys did some weird shit and some stuff went wrong for them. Yeah. I know. But
[01:21:53:13 - 01:22:12:23]
Speaker 1
so it just felt really neat to see. And it's very obvious that they were involved and not afraid to tell their stories. Yeah. Which helped a lot. It's something like this. So there's also a documentary of the first singer, which I haven't watched yet. I'm curious how that runs.
[01:22:12:23 - 01:22:14:15]
Speaker 2
Yeah. Paul Deanna.
[01:22:16:17 - 01:22:42:22]
Speaker 2
He passed just recently, didn't he? I think so. Yeah. But they even had some stuff talking with him a little bit in this. And then the singer that came after Bruce, the Blaze guy who I was fine with, but I didn't think the songs were as cool back then. I just was really, you know, they filmed everything. So you were seeing stuff from them in the 70s in bars and everything. I was like, wow, this is actually some pretty good footage.
[01:22:42:22 - 01:23:00:17]
Speaker 1
Yeah. They shot them and they shot them well. And they obviously, once they got money or something, they faulted that stuff in a really good, secure way. And it was really good. It's wild. If you're any kind of a main fan at all, man, it is absolutely much watch.
[01:23:00:17 - 01:23:04:12]
Speaker 2
It's full of all the music. It's full of all the band members talking about various times.
[01:23:05:13 - 01:23:10:12]
Speaker 2
I just thought it was super inspirational. Yeah. I was like, holy shit, these guys were going for it.
[01:23:10:12 - 01:23:20:02]
Speaker 1
And the idea of they are with Eddie. Yeah. Mascot being creating such a unique persona that
[01:23:21:23 - 01:23:24:05]
Speaker 1
envelops the band. It's always there.
[01:23:25:18 - 01:23:29:12]
Speaker 1
The Ovière Bardin. Yeah. That was a
[01:23:30:16 - 01:23:37:14]
Speaker 1
huge metal fire main fan. So he's in there for a while. I love it when you walk on, you see that guy with the maiden shirt. You just know.
[01:23:39:18 - 01:23:44:14]
Speaker 2
Yeah, that was neat to see him there. I was like, oh, how many other huge stars are we going to see?
[01:23:44:14 - 01:23:48:00]
Speaker 1
No, not many. Because they're not
[01:23:49:00 - 01:23:50:07]
Speaker 1
iron man was never a radio.
[01:23:52:15 - 01:23:59:10]
Speaker 2
That's part of the discussion is these guys are playing to 30,000 people in Brazil and they don't have any radio hits.
[01:24:00:12 - 01:24:01:19]
Speaker 2
Yeah.
[01:24:01:19 - 01:24:03:01]
Speaker 1
KSW
[01:24:04:01 - 01:24:10:04]
Speaker 1
played them occasionally or like their metal specific kind of things. But that was it. Just those kind of radio stations.
[01:24:11:09 - 01:24:21:04]
Speaker 1
But they were an album band. They just I got extra credit for Power Slave for playing the rhyme of the ancient mariner. My English class in junior. Yeah,
[01:24:23:15 - 01:24:23:23]
Speaker 1
love them.
[01:24:23:23 - 01:24:25:07]
Speaker 2
Here's 14 minutes.
[01:24:27:03 - 01:24:30:16]
Speaker 1
I didn't write this game. I didn't write it.
[01:24:30:16 - 01:24:34:08]
Speaker 2
Cool. Iron Maiden, Burning Ambition. I think that's celebratory.
[01:24:35:12 - 01:24:38:05]
Speaker 2
I thought it was worth it. You got to be an Iron Maiden fan.
[01:24:39:21 - 01:24:40:11]
Speaker 2
All right, guys.
[01:24:43:06 - 01:24:52:21]
Speaker 2
Stuart Fails to Save the World is a new series on HBO Max. It is a spin off of the Big Bang Theory. You okay.
[01:24:52:21 - 01:24:56:16]
Speaker 1
I actually watched the Big Bang Theory. I'm looking at this. I'm looking
[01:24:56:16 - 01:25:03:00]
Speaker 2
at this. This series is somehow worse
[01:25:04:19 - 01:25:11:13]
Speaker 2
than the Big Bang Theory. And I know why. No laughter. Without them telling you when to laugh, you will not laugh.
[01:25:12:21 - 01:25:14:14]
Speaker 2
I watched this going.
[01:25:19:07 - 01:25:36:09]
Speaker 2
Wow. It says a 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. And not one laugh in it. Not one smile. Not one. All I did was shake my head and say, well, this proves it. We are fucking idiots.
[01:25:36:09 - 01:25:38:13]
Speaker 3
What is the rough premise?
[01:25:38:13 - 01:25:42:09]
Speaker 2
The rough premise is so this is one of the nerds from the Big Bang Theory.
[01:25:43:10 - 01:25:45:14]
Speaker 2
We open in a
[01:25:46:23 - 01:25:48:19]
Speaker 2
not too distant future where
[01:25:50:09 - 01:26:21:03]
Speaker 2
post Armageddon, the world is has been destroyed by something. His comic shop is still running and people are coming in and trading, you know, a can of peaches for Spider-Man 252 or something like that. You know, he's like, come on, we're talking to 52 here. You can just give me a can of peaches. Jesus Christ. Oh, is that not hilarious? He's also got a laugh track to it. It's still not going to be funny. He's got a small wormhole in the comic book store that they throw people and they don't like.
[01:26:21:03 - 01:26:30:03]
Speaker 1
See, you give me shit because you watch this. I watch the trailer go, no, no fucking way. I'm putting that on and wasted my time with it. This is going to suck.
[01:26:30:03 - 01:26:50:06]
Speaker 2
This is a public service announcement to any other nerd who thinks that maybe a post-apocalyptic comic book store sounds kind of fun, which I did. And then I got 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and I thought, no, all right, here we go. Now, the worst goddamn thing I have seen in years. I have no problem believing that.
[01:26:50:06 - 01:26:52:17]
Speaker 3
But you know what? I don't like comedies.
[01:26:52:17 - 01:26:56:09]
Speaker 2
So and I well, yeah, you wouldn't maybe you'd love this. This is not a comedy. There you go.
[01:26:56:09 - 01:26:58:06]
Speaker 1
No, no, no, good point.
[01:26:58:06 - 01:27:12:05]
Speaker 3
You should check. You should watch it just to see. There is no way because I especially hate both laugh track comedy and things lacking a laugh track comedy. That's why I'm not. But but I also saw Big Bang Theory. I was unemployed at the time.
[01:27:12:05 - 01:27:16:09]
Speaker 1
It was fine. It was really dumb and completely forgettable.
[01:27:16:09 - 01:27:18:00]
Speaker 3
Yeah, I was a hundred percent.
[01:27:18:00 - 01:27:31:07]
Speaker 2
I'm an ex-girlfriend. Rest in peace. She's not dead. She's dead to me. And she liked the Big Bang Theory. And I was like, well, this actually explains everything. It's coming out. Yeah.
[01:27:32:08 - 01:27:36:08]
Speaker 2
She's probably watching this and going, hey, you guys got to get in on this.
[01:27:36:08 - 01:27:39:14]
Speaker 3
Yes. Incredible. Yes. So filmmaking.
[01:27:39:14 - 01:27:46:06]
Speaker 2
Stewart fails to save the world is available on HBO Max also fails to make you laugh. So
[01:27:46:06 - 01:27:47:19]
Speaker 3
I have not heard anything.
[01:27:47:19 - 01:27:52:06]
Speaker 1
So just end on fails. Holy
[01:27:53:20 - 01:27:54:03]
Speaker 1
moly.
[01:27:54:03 - 01:28:01:18]
Speaker 3
Well, I saw something much more fun than that. I had a friend out for the weekend and they she was like, what are we going to watch? And I was like,
[01:28:03:00 - 01:28:04:17]
Speaker 3
we're going to watch the rash.
[01:28:06:08 - 01:28:16:07]
Speaker 3
She was like, are you sure we're going to watch the rash? Yeah, you are. You're pregnant right now. And I was like, we're definitely going to watch the rash. It's inspirational.
[01:28:16:07 - 01:28:19:00]
Speaker 2
You've seen it before. No. Okay.
[01:28:19:00 - 01:28:28:16]
Speaker 3
I had not. But I was like, I know from watching the trailer that a woman is going to give birth surrounded by sharks floating on a bed in the water.
[01:28:28:16 - 01:28:31:03]
Speaker 1
Shall we say difficult circumstances? Yes.
[01:28:31:03 - 01:28:35:04]
Speaker 3
Yes. If anything, that's going to give me like a point to go towards.
[01:28:35:04 - 01:28:37:04]
Speaker 2
Right. At least it's not.
[01:28:37:04 - 01:28:50:22]
Speaker 3
It could be worse. Yeah, it could be so much worse. She can do it. I can do it. Yeah. Um, it was, yeah, it was, it was pretty fun. It was very stupid. Um, it's so stupid. Stars Daphne from Bridgerton.
[01:28:50:22 - 01:28:53:06]
Speaker 2
Oh, okay. I didn't know anybody.
[01:28:53:06 - 01:28:54:03]
Speaker 3
The pregnant lady.
[01:28:54:03 - 01:28:54:12]
Speaker 2
Okay.
[01:28:54:12 - 01:29:05:09]
Speaker 3
Yeah. There was a couple of faces that I was like, oh, you. I think the biggest name in it is, um, I'm forgetting who he is now, but he was that guy in Marvel movies, the black man.
[01:29:05:09 - 01:29:09:05]
Speaker 2
Yes. Yeah. He's the, he's the uncle or something, right?
[01:29:09:05 - 01:29:22:11]
Speaker 3
Yeah. He's the uncle in this. Um, and you know, the idea that there's a hurricane. Yes. Excellent disaster. And then the, there's a giant meat truck. Meat. Who knows meat blood.
[01:29:22:11 - 01:29:27:18]
Speaker 2
No, it's, it's like what you'd see a milk truck. It's carrying blood. Blood.
[01:29:27:18 - 01:29:29:06]
Speaker 28
It's a blood truck.
[01:29:29:06 - 01:29:30:10]
Speaker 2
It's a blood truck.
[01:29:30:10 - 01:29:46:05]
Speaker 3
But it's from meat company. I was like, I don't know what is going on with this because there's no meat that pops up when the truck, uh, truck has an accident. This huge like cylinder just breaks open, just like aluminum can filled with blood into the waterways and
[01:29:46:05 - 01:30:01:07]
Speaker 2
the waterways are the streets now because the town is flooded and that brings the sharks. I'll come in. You gotta love that fucking glorious. I love that nobody during the writing of this said, uh, that's not very realistic. Can we come up with something else?
[01:30:01:07 - 01:30:03:14]
Speaker 3
Absolutely not.
[01:30:03:14 - 01:30:06:08]
Speaker 1
People have a car fall in the number
[01:30:06:08 - 01:30:11:01]
Speaker 3
of times I said, checkoffs insert object here. I
[01:30:12:05 - 01:30:37:14]
Speaker 3
was like, it's check off stakes in the basement. It's going to be, you know, like checkoffs. Uh, oh yeah. Water birth because they're like, oh, your sister had a water birth. I'm not going to do that. I was like, check off the water birth. You're definitely going to be doing that except for the gun. The gun was not a check off anything. They were like, there's a bunch of guns downstairs and a kid goes down to swim and get a gun out and can't, I was like, no, check off gun.
[01:30:37:14 - 01:30:40:18]
Speaker 2
Ironic. They had to do that on purpose, right?
[01:30:40:18 - 01:30:44:06]
Speaker 3
Clearly they were thinking that hard when they were writing this.
[01:30:44:06 - 01:30:45:05]
Speaker 1
That's right. Tessa.
[01:30:45:05 - 01:30:57:10]
Speaker 3
But yeah, I think it mostly worked. It was the ending was, um, I think it lacked a third act. It just didn't, it just kind of like ran out of shape and was like, we're done now by.
[01:30:57:10 - 01:31:26:23]
Speaker 2
Well, I guess. I mean, if you are like me, a, uh, a bad shark fan movie, bad shark movie fan, um, I loved it. There are scenes that are so ridiculous that made me just cackle with the light. I love the water is high enough to go up against the windows so that inside the house, the kids can see the shark floating by the window, but it hasn't come through anything in the door yet.
[01:31:26:23 - 01:31:31:19]
Speaker 3
And when it does break, the water is not as high as it was.
[01:31:31:19 - 01:31:37:02]
Speaker 2
Also, when it does break, the sharks are like, apparently just waiting at the door because they come rushing in.
[01:31:37:02 - 01:31:38:08]
Speaker 29
It's like, wow.
[01:31:39:18 - 01:31:40:20]
Speaker 3
Really fly.
[01:31:40:20 - 01:31:42:06]
Speaker 4
Don't knock. Don't knock. It'll happen.
[01:31:42:06 - 01:31:46:06]
Speaker 3
The door and then the doors open and that's when they come in and you're like,
[01:31:46:06 - 01:32:12:23]
Speaker 2
very polite. Yes. Oh my God. Love that. They've got the, um, the, uh, uh, foster children in the house with the asshole foster parents. Oh, yeah. Uh, that won't let them, uh, there's a reveal that the kids are being fed apparently really gross stuff. And then they find out that the dad has steaks and everything. The freezer below. Yeah. Like, wow. These guys are like evil step parents.
[01:32:12:23 - 01:32:22:10]
Speaker 3
They are the most evil step parents. And then you keep being like, oh, okay. Well, I guess they're all like taken care of by the sharks. And then like the stepdad keeps coming back, but with like less limbs.
[01:32:24:17 - 01:32:30:16]
Speaker 3
You're not okay. You're like corpse is like, I'm still going to be a dick. Yeah.
[01:32:30:16 - 01:32:31:04]
Speaker 2
Yeah.
[01:32:31:04 - 01:32:32:15]
Speaker 3
Looking upon the scanner.
[01:32:32:15 - 01:32:35:06]
Speaker 2
A delight. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Netflix.
[01:32:35:06 - 01:32:54:00]
Speaker 3
It was super fun. And so the birth was hilarious because I was like, I don't think I could swim and birth like the worst part of the birth. That's it. Because you're kind of immobilized and like a pain. I was like, I don't know. Is she just kicking through it? How is she doing this? And she gets to the top and my friend who's an EMT.
[01:32:55:04 - 01:33:08:06]
Speaker 3
And the baby just pops out of water behind her. Does a little splash and she's like grabs it and you're cuddles it. And she's like, wow, that baby just popped on out.
[01:33:08:06 - 01:33:10:01]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Under water. Water birth.
[01:33:10:01 - 01:33:16:14]
Speaker 2
Water birth. Uh, remind me, wasn't there something with the umbilical cord? Did they saw that off with?
[01:33:16:14 - 01:33:22:12]
Speaker 3
Yeah. She gets a piece of a tree branch and uses that to saw off the umbilical cord and that's fine.
[01:33:22:12 - 01:33:24:04]
Speaker 4
I love it.
[01:33:24:04 - 01:33:29:05]
Speaker 3
Wow. This is magical. Impressive. Truly magical. Yeah.
[01:33:29:05 - 01:33:32:17]
Speaker 2
Thrash is available on Netflix. You should all watch it. Let's get it. Check it out.
[01:33:32:17 - 01:33:34:12]
Speaker 3
Free for Netflix subscribers.
[01:33:36:02 - 01:33:47:13]
Speaker 1
Okay. So as many of you know, it's that time of year again, I've started the 100 days of watching a shit ton of films. Some great, some not. And as usual, I start off with, well, hold on.
[01:33:47:13 - 01:33:50:02]
Speaker 2
You got to explain the 100 days, not 100 days of something.
[01:33:50:02 - 01:34:04:13]
Speaker 1
100 days of horror where you watch start 100 days out of Halloween and you go, you look at the people do 31 days hours. Like that's good, but watch out. Also, I'm fucking insane. You can't have seen any of these movies before. All movies haven't seen. Yeah.
[01:34:04:13 - 01:34:10:00]
Speaker 3
That's crazy to me because I could barely, I made it through 31 days one time out of the five times I've tried.
[01:34:10:00 - 01:34:30:19]
Speaker 1
See, you're probably trying to find good movies that you hadn't seen. That is not one of my criteria. I start every year with a series of, uh, from a movie franchise that I've only seen the first one of. So this year is leprechaun. Okay. That's not great film.
[01:34:30:19 - 01:34:33:03]
Speaker 3
Which one did you, which one have you seen?
[01:34:33:03 - 01:34:33:23]
Speaker 1
The first one.
[01:34:33:23 - 01:34:34:12]
Speaker 3
Okay.
[01:34:34:12 - 01:35:02:22]
Speaker 1
And so I've gone through and I've watched a bunch of them now and I, I'm not, this is like Amityville though. There's a crap ton of leprechaun movies out there being produced by random thing. Oh, I didn't know that. I'm ignoring those. I'm just going with the official leprechaun stuff. So I hit the last, the most recent one leprechaun returns and it starts up and I'm like, Oh, shit, sci-fi channel original. No, sci-fi, whatever they say now.
[01:35:04:10 - 01:35:26:04]
Speaker 1
And, but then it starts, I'm going, hold on. These are mildly competent actors. The guy who is usually painted as horribly stereotyped into one dimension actually has dimensions. It was kind of interesting early on. And so I looked it up and it's directed by a Kostatsky, the guy directed the void and, um, the, the,
[01:35:28:11 - 01:35:30:06]
Speaker 1
you love power Rangers movie.
[01:35:30:06 - 01:35:32:17]
Speaker 2
Oh, the, um, psycho Gorman.
[01:35:32:17 - 01:35:32:22]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:35:32:22 - 01:35:36:03]
Speaker 2
So I didn't, I didn't love that one. I didn't mean it.
[01:35:36:03 - 01:35:44:17]
Speaker 1
Okay. On both of those films actually. But when you put him into a movie franchise, like the leprechaun, he really shines the quality
[01:35:45:21 - 01:35:46:20]
Speaker 1
skyrockets.
[01:35:46:20 - 01:35:49:19]
Speaker 3
This guy knows how to choose from three different shots.
[01:35:49:19 - 01:35:55:07]
Speaker 1
Yeah. But there's no work Davis. I'm sure the leprechaun hard faithful.
[01:35:55:07 - 01:35:55:18]
Speaker 2
Yeah.
[01:35:55:18 - 01:35:57:15]
Speaker 1
Don't like this one at all. I would imagine.
[01:35:57:15 - 01:35:58:06]
Speaker 4
Yeah.
[01:35:58:06 - 01:36:02:06]
Speaker 2
But we know why did he turn it down? Is he just getting too old to do this kind of shit?
[01:36:02:06 - 01:36:36:03]
Speaker 1
I'm, I'm leaning more towards that. He just, I didn't, I don't feel like doing this one on paper. This looked not very interesting, but he's a good enough director that he added a little something to it. And it's, it's watchable. It is still the somewhat modern thing where most of the characters are annoying as hell, but the ones that aren't are good enough. And I don't, I'd say I haven't watched the first one in long enough to definitely say it's still the best, but of the sequels I watched, this is probably the most competent What
[01:36:36:03 - 01:36:38:00]
Speaker 3
is the title of this one?
[01:36:38:00 - 01:36:44:19]
Speaker 1
leprechaun returns. Returns. Okay. It was 2020 or 20. It was not real recent, but recent enough.
[01:36:44:19 - 01:36:55:04]
Speaker 2
I remember thinking, oh, I was like, Oh, and the only reason I watched it was people were talking about it and saying, you might be surprised to know that the latest leprechaun movie is maybe the best one.
[01:36:55:04 - 01:36:55:15]
Speaker 3
So
[01:36:56:19 - 01:36:59:20]
Speaker 3
interesting. Did you end up watching the Jennifer Aniston?
[01:36:59:20 - 01:37:08:15]
Speaker 1
That's the first one. Oh, so I, I, the first one. Yeah. So I, I'd already seen that one. So I don't, did not include that. Sure. Okay. Next up.
[01:37:11:19 - 01:37:13:02]
Speaker 1
I blanked on that. They're called.
[01:37:13:02 - 01:37:16:03]
Speaker 2
Oh, another franchise. So yeah. Yeah.
[01:37:16:03 - 01:37:18:11]
Speaker 1
The, um, starts with an I.
[01:37:18:11 - 01:37:19:22]
Speaker 3
Oh, insidious.
[01:37:19:22 - 01:37:20:14]
Speaker 1
Insidious.
[01:37:20:14 - 01:37:21:12]
Speaker 3
Oh, okay.
[01:37:21:12 - 01:37:23:18]
Speaker 1
I've only seen the first one of that one too.
[01:37:23:18 - 01:37:24:19]
Speaker 3
I've only seen the first one.
[01:37:24:19 - 01:37:30:14]
Speaker 1
Because the first one had some decent scares, but it pretty interesting. It's fine. I don't need to see the sequels.
[01:37:30:14 - 01:37:32:02]
Speaker 28
Well, here we go.
[01:37:32:02 - 01:37:34:12]
Speaker 2
Well, they are, they are bad.
[01:37:34:12 - 01:37:37:02]
Speaker 3
Credible. Wow.
[01:37:38:13 - 01:37:46:08]
Speaker 2
All right, gang. How about we take a little break and then when we come back, we are doing the last film in our Mad Max a thon series. Girls off.
[01:37:47:11 - 01:37:51:23]
Speaker 30
The
[01:37:55:23 - 01:38:10:15]
Speaker 30
post-apocalyptic party of the year is coming this October, 2010. Wasteland weekend. Three days of Mad Max inspired mayhem in the Southern California desert. Buy your tickets now at wastelandweekend.com or facebook.com slash wasteland weekend.
[01:38:13:13 - 01:38:13:23]
Speaker 27
Hello.
[01:38:15:03 - 01:38:17:22]
Speaker 29
Let's see who's called the strange eons radio hotline.
[01:38:19:08 - 01:38:41:18]
Speaker 27
Hey guys, it's Micah. I think you left out one piece of trivia for fury road. That's been pretty fascinating to me for years at this point that George Miller dug up one of the art directors slash writers from the reboot cartoon series from the nineties specifically because he saw an episode called "The Bad Bob"
[01:38:43:02 - 01:39:02:08]
Speaker 27
that was like a whole cloth parody of Bad Max but loved the pacing so much that he wanted the same feel on fury road, which is why that guy has a co-writer credit. So I think his name is Brendan, Brendan McCarthy. I think that's the right name, but yeah, go check it out. Thanks.
[01:39:02:08 - 01:39:09:00]
Speaker 29
If you'd like to call the strange eons radio hotline dial 253-237-4266.
[01:39:10:14 - 01:39:18:17]
Speaker 2
And
[01:39:23:01 - 01:39:31:15]
Speaker 2
we are back. We have been doing the Mad Max movies, Eric. And we are at the last final movie and it is yours.
[01:39:31:15 - 01:39:42:08]
Speaker 1
Yeah, no, it's good. Am I right? Last movie. Don't need to do the comics. Don't do the other stuff. This is good. All right. So this is 2024 is Furiosa, a Mad Max.
[01:39:46:09 - 01:39:47:08]
Speaker 29
Whatever you have to do,
[01:39:51:16 - 01:39:52:16]
Speaker 29
however long it takes.
[01:39:56:17 - 01:39:58:15]
Speaker 29
Promise me you'll find your way home.
[01:40:03:12 - 01:40:04:12]
Speaker 29
Furiosa. Furiosa.
[01:40:06:10 - 01:40:07:11]
Speaker 29
Give me this promise.
[01:40:44:15 - 01:40:46:02]
Speaker 29
I am done.
[01:40:47:13 - 01:40:49:09]
Speaker 29
Start your engines.
[01:41:19:09 - 01:41:30:12]
(Music Playing)
[01:41:32:10 - 01:41:33:12]
Speaker 28
I'm serious, son!
[01:41:33:12 - 01:41:35:02]
Speaker 4
The darkest of angels.
[01:41:38:19 - 01:41:43:01]
(Music Playing)
[01:41:44:17 - 01:41:45:18]
Speaker 4
The question is--
[01:41:45:18 - 01:41:50:05]
(Music Playing)
[01:41:50:05 - 01:41:52:10]
Speaker 28
Do you have an Indian to make it epic?
[01:42:03:10 - 01:42:04:17]
(Music Playing)
[01:42:06:00 - 01:42:06:21]
Speaker 2
On that next saga.
[01:42:06:21 - 01:42:11:15]
Speaker 3
Is that a retitling by the way? No, that's what it was titled. Wow. That's rough.
[01:42:11:15 - 01:42:20:00]
Speaker 2
I think they had hidden in the-- Yeah, I think they had to make sure everybody knew, hey, come on and see this movie. It's a Mad Max saga. That's right. Is Mad Max in it, Eric?
[01:42:21:09 - 01:42:25:18]
Speaker 1
Sort of. Question mark, question mark, question mark. Yes. He makes an appearance.
[01:42:27:00 - 01:42:29:12]
Speaker 1
Hey, can you guess who this was directed by?
[01:42:29:12 - 01:42:30:08]
Speaker 2
Is it
[01:42:30:08 - 01:42:38:20]
Speaker 1
George Miller? Yeah. George Miller, written by George Miller and Nick Lathouris.
[01:42:38:20 - 01:42:40:21]
Speaker 3
Is that the same guy who's been writing on it?
[01:42:40:21 - 01:42:42:06]
Speaker 1
Fury Road and-- Yeah.
[01:42:42:06 - 01:42:44:14]
Speaker 2
And the next one, he's in a story reactor.
[01:42:45:18 - 01:42:48:21]
Speaker 2
He's listed on IMDB as-- I think it's called The Wasteland.
[01:42:48:21 - 01:42:50:00]
Speaker 3
Yeah. OK.
[01:42:50:00 - 01:42:56:10]
Speaker 1
Now, this is starring in Furiosa. This is Anna Taylor Joy. And there's a reason for that.
[01:42:58:12 - 01:42:59:23]
Speaker 1
They brought in--
[01:43:01:15 - 01:43:18:05]
Speaker 1
Charlize. Charlize Theron. And did some anti-aging effects and stuff on her. And George Miller just didn't think it worked well enough yet. It just isn't there to do an entire movie. Yeah. As his main character being digitally altered. So
[01:43:19:07 - 01:43:22:15]
Speaker 1
decided to hire somebody else. And
[01:43:24:08 - 01:43:25:10]
Speaker 1
she-- you have
[01:43:26:18 - 01:43:34:12]
Speaker 1
to cut my hair. I can cut my hair. No problem. Cut my hair. Her modeling age is saying, no, you can't. So that's why Furiosa is not bald in this one. Oh, interesting.
[01:43:36:02 - 01:43:43:13]
Speaker 1
This also has some little-known actor, Chris Hemsworth. That's right. Seen him in some Marvel movies. Crime 101.
[01:43:44:17 - 01:43:46:17]
Speaker 1
He plays Dementius. Yes.
[01:43:49:15 - 01:43:53:05]
Speaker 1
Aileah Brown Young, who is young Furiosa, who is in
[01:43:54:21 - 01:44:06:13]
Speaker 1
another Miller movie, 3000 Years of Longing, which is a very different Miller movie. Pretty good, but very different. Tom Burke, Only God Forgive, The Lazarus Project, and the upcoming Blade Runner TV show.
[01:44:06:13 - 01:44:07:17]
Speaker 4
Oh, OK.
[01:44:07:17 - 01:44:16:07]
Speaker 1
And he plays the driver of the big rig. He's sort of a-- he is the Mad Max character, art sort of guy in this movie.
[01:44:16:07 - 01:44:23:14]
Speaker 2
Not only that, but I liked him in this so much. I was like, I wish he had played Max in the last movie.
[01:44:23:14 - 01:44:35:17]
Speaker 1
Yeah, he was really good. And I just plays him. He's one of those actors you watch that you feel like there's so much going on inside this guy.
[01:44:36:18 - 01:44:41:19]
Speaker 1
And it all feels like it's the character. It doesn't feel like it's the actor back there trying to figure out, oh, what am I doing?
[01:44:41:19 - 01:44:45:10]
Speaker 2
Yeah, he's very stoic and Mad Maxian.
[01:44:45:10 - 01:44:46:05]
Speaker 4
Yes.
[01:44:46:05 - 01:44:53:21]
Speaker 1
So this movie starts with Furiosa the Kid in the Greenland, which they were talking about going to in Fury Road. And of course,
[01:44:54:22 - 01:44:55:16]
Speaker 1
it wasn't there anymore.
[01:44:57:06 - 01:45:06:16]
Speaker 1
Of course, she's kind of a troublemaker, and she's really good with her hands. They show this because there's some motorcycle guys, and she messes with their gear.
[01:45:06:16 - 01:45:12:22]
Speaker 2
Yeah, I don't think she's a troublemaker. I think she understands these people can't be allowed to tell anybody that the Greenland
[01:45:12:22 - 01:45:14:05]
Speaker 3
is here.
[01:45:14:05 - 01:45:16:07]
Speaker 1
But the--
[01:45:18:05 - 01:45:26:02]
Speaker 1
oh, she's captured by those people after a long motorcycle race. There's a strange little moment of humor when
[01:45:27:12 - 01:45:32:20]
Speaker 1
her mother shoots one of the motorcycle guys, and he lands in the sand with his legs still.
[01:45:32:20 - 01:45:36:09]
Speaker 3
He's so funny. It's so wild. I was like, whoa.
[01:45:36:09 - 01:45:37:10]
Speaker 2
That's right.
[01:45:37:10 - 01:45:38:13]
Speaker 3
He died in such a way.
[01:45:38:13 - 01:45:50:09]
Speaker 2
It is interesting. I mean, it's done-- it's hinted at in Fury Road, but we definitely see there's men in this community, but the women are running it, and it's a woman who goes after the guys. Two on.
[01:45:50:09 - 01:45:55:05]
Speaker 1
Yeah. And one ends up going back, but the mom keeps going, of course.
[01:45:57:03 - 01:46:09:03]
Speaker 1
I say after talking about Fury Road night scenes, not as well realized in this one as they were in Fury Road. They're fine, but they're just a regular movie night stuff, which is OK.
[01:46:10:12 - 01:46:13:10]
Speaker 1
But Furios is taken to the camp full of creepy dudes,
[01:46:14:12 - 01:46:15:05]
Speaker 1
and
[01:46:16:13 - 01:46:19:22]
Speaker 1
mom tries to rescue. Doesn't really go too well.
[01:46:21:00 - 01:46:21:14]
Speaker 1
Chris
[01:46:23:12 - 01:46:26:02]
Speaker 1
is kind of a dick in this movie. Thor is not the hero.
[01:46:26:02 - 01:46:29:22]
Speaker 3
He is. Yeah, he is a bad weasily dude.
[01:46:29:22 - 01:46:35:21]
Speaker 1
Trying to use the mother to force Furios to reveal where the green place is and
[01:46:37:17 - 01:46:53:07]
Speaker 1
ends up killing her. And then just keeping Furios as a prize or something. Put her in a cage and ride her around. Maybe as a-- the hint that he had kids previously is the little stuffed animal he carries around. So
[01:46:54:15 - 01:47:01:11]
Speaker 1
it's almost like a hint that he kind of likes the girl not as a creepy way, but as a daughter.
[01:47:01:11 - 01:47:17:18]
Speaker 2
They also make a big point of checking her teeth and everything, and they're like, oh, this girl is healthy. She came from a good place, and I think that's why he's holding on to her, is like, look at what I have here. This specimen. Yeah, we're healthy people, too.
[01:47:20:01 - 01:47:41:15]
Speaker 1
They do a nice example when they start traveling around a little bit of how big Dimitris' group is. This huge, wide pullback shot. I'm like, Jesus Christ. So he comes to the Citadel and trying to-- he wants to make a deal with--
[01:47:44:20 - 01:47:46:06]
Speaker 1
Immortan Joe. Immortan Joe.
[01:47:46:06 - 01:47:48:00]
Speaker 3
He wants to take over the first time.
[01:47:48:00 - 01:48:12:12]
Speaker 1
Well, he comes in saying-- pretending he wants to make a deal. But he's going in to figure out how to get up to that area so he can take things out. Doesn't go particularly well. You do get to meet Skrotus and Richtus, who are both in Fury Road, who are here looking the exact same age, as
[01:48:12:12 - 01:48:17:09]
Speaker 2
does Immortan Joe. Yeah, what is this supposed to be, 15 years or 20 years?
[01:48:17:09 - 01:48:21:20]
Speaker 1
Yeah, I mean, Furios is really the only age-- Charlize
[01:48:21:20 - 01:48:27:16]
Speaker 2
is, quite honestly, 48 or something. But I don't know if she's supposed to be playing 48.
[01:48:27:16 - 01:48:37:05]
Speaker 1
No, and if you go by that age-- because she's really young in this, she'd have to be 40 years later, 30 years later.
[01:48:37:05 - 01:48:50:12]
Speaker 2
It's probably 10 or 15 years. It's also one of those things where this reboot of the whole series is like, OK, well, now we're 15 years before that, and the world still looks like this? When did this all go south?
[01:48:50:12 - 01:48:52:01]
Speaker 28
Yeah, exactly.
[01:48:52:01 - 01:48:53:12]
Speaker 1
What happened between
[01:48:55:07 - 01:48:58:07]
Speaker 1
Thunderdome and Fury Road?
[01:48:58:07 - 01:49:13:09]
Speaker 3
Yeah, and it feels like-- to me, I was like, does that mean there's a lot of pockets of these little utopian random places where people have their shit figured out, and then it's just slowly, once they get discovered, they all kind of go to shit?
[01:49:13:09 - 01:49:14:19]
Speaker 2
Right. Yeah.
[01:49:14:19 - 01:49:26:15]
Speaker 3
Yeah, it was weird. They started with that voiceover of like, and all these terrible things made the world go bad. And I was like, wait, did that just happen? What is this? Where are we? What's going on?
[01:49:26:15 - 01:49:32:19]
Speaker 2
Right. How did cars survive at all? How did people survive at all if the world looks like this?
[01:49:32:19 - 01:49:36:13]
Speaker 3
The bones are poisoned. I was like, well, some people seem OK.
[01:49:36:13 - 01:49:49:07]
Speaker 1
Some people's bones are OK. All the tools, too, for fixing cars and building cars. But so when it doesn't go too well, Dementius decides he's going to go over and take over the gas town.
[01:49:49:07 - 01:49:49:21]
Speaker 2
Yeah.
[01:49:49:21 - 01:49:58:01]
Speaker 1
Well, he makes the deal with him to work with him on gas town, because he realized, I can't take over at this point. So I'm going to run gas town for you.
[01:49:58:01 - 01:50:00:11]
Speaker 2
I loved at the Citadel
[01:50:01:14 - 01:50:12:06]
Speaker 2
the cranes that come on and the swinging hooks, just grabbing people in cars in the air and just stealing everything and dropping the guys or everything. I was like, oh, we didn't get to see this in Fury Road. No, no.
[01:50:12:06 - 01:50:21:12]
Speaker 1
That's fair. I didn't get to gas town or bullet town in Fury Road. Here we get both of them. Yeah. Gas town's pretty cool. Bullet town's a little underwhelming.
[01:50:21:12 - 01:50:25:01]
Speaker 2
They're both very industrial fights.
[01:50:25:01 - 01:50:25:19]
Speaker 4
Yeah.
[01:50:27:17 - 01:50:44:16]
Speaker 1
So but Furiosa is left behind as an offering, basically, to Morton. So she goes and joins the wives. Right. At a very young age. At a very young age. But she's not about to put up with that shit. No. She escapes and disappears into the.
[01:50:46:08 - 01:50:51:03]
Speaker 1
Dressing up as a man and hiding in the world for a very long time.
[01:50:51:03 - 01:50:55:07]
Speaker 3
Yeah. Yeah. Kind of in the pit crew. Yeah. Like car mechanics and stuff.
[01:50:55:07 - 01:51:05:21]
Speaker 2
Because there's lots of masks. Yeah, they really kind of focus on how much of a badass she is. So it makes you realize, OK, you can totally see her growing up to be the Charlies.
[01:51:05:21 - 01:51:16:19]
Speaker 3
They do. Yeah, they do such a good job because in that scene where she manages to escape and I guess that son just likes to have sex with his dad's wives before.
[01:51:17:21 - 01:51:22:12]
Speaker 1
Oh, I feel like she needs to be murdered. I got the film more like he was sneaking in. Yeah.
[01:51:22:12 - 01:51:33:02]
Speaker 3
Yeah. Not like officially allowed. But you would think that's a big risk. You think his dad would be like, I'm not being untouched. That's fair. OK. Question retract.
[01:51:33:02 - 01:51:36:02]
Speaker 2
Why men are stupid? How old is he then?
[01:51:36:02 - 01:51:38:06]
Speaker 4
I know. 11. I mean, literally.
[01:51:38:06 - 01:51:39:22]
Speaker 2
Yeah, it's pretty
[01:51:39:22 - 01:51:43:08]
Speaker 3
really nasty. But yeah, with the she has.
[01:51:43:08 - 01:51:44:23]
Speaker 1
I believe that is Scrotus.
[01:51:46:01 - 01:51:49:17]
Speaker 1
It does that. It's either Scrotus or Richter. Yeah.
[01:51:49:17 - 01:52:04:01]
Speaker 3
She has all these bells tied into her hair. And then she cuts off the hair and makes a wig like the first night. And you're like, man. And it comes into place so quickly. I was like, oh, when is this? Oh, right now. Right now this hair is coming into effect.
[01:52:04:01 - 01:52:12:15]
Speaker 2
Like to hold on to the the seed that her mom had given her. I don't know what it was, a walnut or something. It's a peach. It's a peach. OK. Peach pit.
[01:52:12:15 - 01:52:13:09]
Speaker 3
Peach pit, yeah.
[01:52:13:09 - 01:52:15:20]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Well, the
[01:52:16:20 - 01:52:25:22]
Speaker 1
group she hides a monk is called the Black Thumbs. And they're mechanics that build the tanker to carry the gasoline. The gasoline. They always say it in itself.
[01:52:27:02 - 01:52:36:22]
Speaker 1
Very bright, shiny rig. At first, I thought, wow, is that going to be the same ring that she's driving? No. This not going to be the same ring she drives in the previous film. OK.
[01:52:38:20 - 01:52:39:18]
Speaker 1
She
[01:52:42:00 - 01:52:46:12]
Speaker 1
joins the first-- this is driven by the Mad Max guy. Right.
[01:52:46:12 - 01:52:48:20]
Speaker 2
And she joins the-- Pretorian Jack or something like that.
[01:52:48:20 - 01:52:58:14]
Speaker 1
She joins the first drive of it, disguised as the Black Thumbs still. But then shit goes wrong and battle start talking. And she kicks ass.
[01:52:58:14 - 01:53:00:02]
Speaker 3
Yeah. She's just so good.
[01:53:00:02 - 01:53:09:21]
Speaker 1
And it is revealed to him at least that, oh, this is probably a girl. Right. But of course, not being an asshole, he decides, you know what? You kick some ass.
[01:53:11:10 - 01:53:16:20]
Speaker 1
I'm going to have you be my co-pilot for learning how to drive this and do all that stuff.
[01:53:18:02 - 01:53:24:09]
Speaker 1
And it's another fun George Miller battle scene with crazy shit going on. And
[01:53:26:10 - 01:53:39:05]
Speaker 1
he just knows how to stage that shit so well. Yeah. And make it-- one of the biggest problems I had with the first couple Transformers movies, the battles were so violent or whatever that you really couldn't see what was going on.
[01:53:39:05 - 01:53:40:04]
Speaker 3
It was so messy.
[01:53:40:04 - 01:54:00:23]
Speaker 2
That's the editing. I'm going to give that credit then to his wife and him for realizing, you know, you edit this the way you will and it won't look like it. And instead of like those Transformer movies are so quick, the edits that you're like, you can't really tell what's going on. She takes the time and even fucking uses slow motion sometimes. She's like, you're going to look at what's happening.
[01:54:00:23 - 01:54:05:06]
Speaker 3
It's really nice. So well done. It just makes action and works so much better.
[01:54:05:06 - 01:54:09:19]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Yeah. And you did call a shotgun a boomstick. So hey, that's fun.
[01:54:11:14 - 01:54:11:23]
Speaker 1
But
[01:54:13:11 - 01:54:22:10]
Speaker 1
so they train for a little while. It's not a real big part of the movie. But she learns to eventually reach this point where you can drive on your own. Right. You need to.
[01:54:24:01 - 01:54:28:13]
Speaker 1
So it turns out, not surprisingly, Dementias is not running Gastown particularly well
[01:54:29:16 - 01:54:45:05]
Speaker 1
by choice or just by in confidence, because for the charismatic person he embodies is pretty cool. You see why people follow him. But his actions and stuff aren't necessarily the great leader.
[01:54:45:05 - 01:54:53:17]
Speaker 3
It's like he's super smart, but only at survival. Yeah. He's not good at actually functionally running a operation.
[01:54:53:17 - 01:54:56:19]
Speaker 1
Right. Yeah. He's not going to be good at the old household.
[01:54:57:19 - 01:54:57:20]
Speaker 1
But
[01:54:58:21 - 01:55:04:19]
Speaker 1
so rebellions, unrests are taking over. And so he wants a meeting at the Citadel to see if they can work it out.
[01:55:06:09 - 01:55:21:20]
Speaker 1
And Morton, of course, sets up a plan to take him out during that. So he sends it. We got to get to Bullet Town and get a lot more extra bullets. Well, guess what? Dementias is good at planning some things. And he's already he's already at Bullet Town and taking it over and is waiting for
[01:55:22:23 - 01:55:24:00]
Speaker 1
them to arrive. Yeah.
[01:55:25:03 - 01:55:27:05]
Speaker 1
So Jack attacks and looking.
[01:55:29:15 - 01:55:31:07]
Speaker 1
Pushes Furiosa out of the fight.
[01:55:33:06 - 01:55:41:07]
Speaker 1
His motives aren't entirely clear, other than, you know, it's like, I don't think I'm coming back from this and I'd rather you survive it.
[01:55:41:07 - 01:55:43:00]
Speaker 2
Yeah, I think that's what it is.
[01:55:43:00 - 01:55:59:02]
Speaker 3
Yeah, he has a lot of respect for and from the start of the relationship, he says, I'm going to train you and then when you want to leave and do whatever it is you want to do, then I'll make that space for you. So clearly, whether, you know, whether or not he's growing affection for her, it's hard to say, but
[01:55:59:02 - 01:56:08:22]
Speaker 1
well, it's like you're talking about with the Fury Road. There there's a great male, female relationship here. Yeah, it has nothing to do with being a couple.
[01:56:08:22 - 01:56:17:00]
Speaker 2
They just yeah, I think put into those kind of situations, you're going to bond or else it's not going to work for you guys.
[01:56:17:00 - 01:56:20:22]
Speaker 1
Yeah, you're battling together. It's that same kind of idea.
[01:56:23:11 - 01:56:44:11]
Speaker 1
So she, of course, continues to stay and fight and she's the great shot that, you know, from Fury Road, she's already developed into and takes out a bunch of the people that are threatening him quite well. Can't quite get the big guy. Yeah, I get the Dementias there, but that's all right, because, you know, of course she can't.
[01:56:45:23 - 01:56:56:07]
Speaker 1
I do enjoy that for all the worrying about the gasoline, but we're really worried about it when they're actually out driving around. Nobody ever runs just well, shit, we ran out of gas. Right.
[01:56:58:16 - 01:57:07:03]
Speaker 1
There's a OK, and here's where Mad Max makes an appearance. Yeah, where they're driving back to the Citadel and there's the opening shot from Fury Road.
[01:57:07:03 - 01:57:08:02]
Speaker 4
Yeah.
[01:57:08:02 - 01:57:09:14]
Speaker 1
So it's like.
[01:57:11:05 - 01:57:34:12]
Speaker 1
There's a thing, George Miller has a statement about that because he views Furiosa probably takes place after Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome. He says probably because he doesn't have a set view of how this series strict continuity. It's rather a series of myths and legends about the world and the people in it. Yeah. But you're OK.
[01:57:34:12 - 01:57:42:14]
Speaker 3
Sure. Well, I put him in, I guess he has to make some kind of nod towards him. Just like why have that shot at all?
[01:57:42:14 - 01:57:53:00]
Speaker 2
Yeah, and it's not really the opening scene. It's just kind of him there on a cliff. But then if it's not the opening scene, it means that Max just hangs out in this area for years.
[01:57:53:00 - 01:57:59:04]
Speaker 1
Yeah, it's like I'm just going to see what's going on here. Time to go down. Whoops, got captured. Maybe I should have watched closer.
[01:57:59:04 - 01:57:59:17]
Speaker 2
Yeah,
[01:58:00:19 - 01:58:02:18]
Speaker 2
it didn't need to be there. Nope.
[01:58:04:02 - 01:58:12:18]
Speaker 1
So the Furiosa, they go back to the Citadel, you're not going to have to find a battle and all that good stuff. 40 Day Wasteland War
[01:58:13:20 - 01:58:16:04]
Speaker 1
and a brief return of the guitar dude. Yeah.
[01:58:18:12 - 01:58:20:07]
Speaker 1
Sorry, Ted. Guitar dude rocks.
[01:58:21:13 - 01:58:23:04]
Speaker 2
Do four here. I saw that coming.
[01:58:24:20 - 01:58:28:03]
Speaker 1
As she steals Skrotas vehicles, the guy keep.
[01:58:30:19 - 01:58:44:20]
Speaker 1
Calls her like the fifth writer of the apocalypse, and she comes in and takes basically the last day. It's the leftover from one of the battles, and she takes one of the last remaining working cars and just. So yeah, working.
[01:58:44:20 - 01:58:51:12]
Speaker 2
It's instead of one wheel, it's got a board. That's right. Three wheels and a board. I guess it would be. Pretty good.
[01:58:51:12 - 01:58:57:01]
Speaker 1
So she's headed off to Confrontamentius, which is.
[01:58:59:11 - 01:59:01:20]
Speaker 1
Luckily, the two people in this scene are very good.
[01:59:01:20 - 01:59:02:12]
Speaker 3
Yeah.
[01:59:02:12 - 01:59:08:02]
Speaker 1
Because it's a strange way to end such a huge monumentally battled
[01:59:08:02 - 01:59:14:05]
Speaker 2
stuff. It's very, very different from any other ending of this series.
[01:59:14:05 - 01:59:16:21]
Speaker 3
Yeah. Yeah. I really dig it.
[01:59:16:21 - 01:59:19:00]
Speaker 2
I do too. It's a thoughtful ending.
[01:59:19:00 - 01:59:19:15]
Speaker 3
Yeah.
[01:59:19:15 - 01:59:30:06]
Speaker 1
It was. That's why I said they are so good that it all works. The way they run their characters, the way they escalate the scene, and they don't just. And it's not
[01:59:31:11 - 01:59:36:16]
Speaker 1
one of the things we all know that's a mistake in filmmaking is when you go from zero to 100
[01:59:37:16 - 01:59:44:02]
Speaker 1
in like two lines. Yeah. And they don't do that. They absolutely escalate this really well. It's
[01:59:45:08 - 01:59:46:10]
Speaker 1
well written and it's
[01:59:47:17 - 01:59:48:12]
Speaker 1
well-elected.
[01:59:48:12 - 01:59:49:03]
Speaker 4
Yeah.
[01:59:49:03 - 01:59:55:00]
Speaker 1
They do return to Fury Road shots in the credits, but the images are very muted and kind of boring.
[01:59:55:00 - 01:59:58:13]
Speaker 3
Yeah, they like black and white at it. Or not quite, but.
[01:59:58:13 - 02:00:00:14]
Speaker 1
Not quite. Just saturated it.
[02:00:00:14 - 02:00:01:06]
Speaker 2
Yeah.
[02:00:01:06 - 02:00:02:11]
Speaker 1
Resaturated it. Yeah.
[02:00:02:11 - 02:00:16:10]
Speaker 2
You know, I love the scene. So she gets her arm ripped off at that one point and then she builds that prosthetic arm herself. Yeah. I was like, okay, I really love how capable and badass she is and everything. And then I also love the
[02:00:17:20 - 02:00:25:02]
Speaker 2
idea that, you know, they give us a couple of possible endings for Dementius and what she did to him and everything. I'm just like, I hope it's the Peach Pit idea.
[02:00:26:09 - 02:00:34:00]
Speaker 3
The Peach Pit is wise. Like, how did he stay alive this long? Just drinking that little water puddle. He's like, here you go.
[02:00:34:00 - 02:00:35:19]
Speaker 1
He's going to water you.
[02:00:35:19 - 02:00:36:11]
Speaker 28
Yeah.
[02:00:36:11 - 02:00:48:12]
Speaker 1
Yeah. That was, I liked this one more the second time watching it. The first time I was like, okay, I enjoy this a lot more. Um, George Miller, one thing you can't do in a sequel or prequel is get boring.
[02:00:48:12 - 02:00:49:08]
Speaker 2
Yeah.
[02:00:49:08 - 02:00:51:05]
Speaker 3
You did not get boring. You did not get boring.
[02:00:51:05 - 02:01:10:03]
Speaker 2
You know what's funny? It's funny you say that because I think I like this one a little less, this feeling. I, I, I loved it the first time. Okay. Yeah. And, um, and cause there's so much story, but this time I was kind of like, oh, I think I get why people were disappointed in this one after Fury Road. Oh, well, yeah.
[02:01:10:03 - 02:01:20:12]
Speaker 1
After Fury Road, it's still, still a step down. Yeah. Um, before I go into tribute, do you want to rank them again then? Seems like this
[02:01:20:12 - 02:01:36:22]
Speaker 2
one is hard to put in because I do like it and I love the world building and I'm so disappointed. That we haven't got a third max film now that we kind of know we've got these three fortresses and the wasteland. And I'm like, I, now I just want to see max doing something.
[02:01:36:22 - 02:01:37:05]
Speaker 30
Yeah.
[02:01:37:05 - 02:01:38:05]
Speaker 2
Um,
[02:01:40:10 - 02:01:42:16]
Speaker 2
uh, beyond thunder dome is last.
[02:01:44:06 - 02:01:46:04]
Speaker 2
I
[02:01:48:10 - 02:01:52:02]
Speaker 2
think Mad Max comes next.
[02:02:19:19 - 02:02:28:01]
Speaker 3
I think it's hard because I don't want to put Furioso that far down because it's a great movie, but it's also like a messy movie.
[02:02:28:01 - 02:02:33:09]
Speaker 1
I mean, it's all degrees. These are all, yeah, they're still, yeah. I mean, I wouldn't,
[02:02:34:16 - 02:02:41:05]
Speaker 1
I wouldn't, although I didn't like Beyond Thunder the much, I wouldn't call it a Turkey. No, you know, it's not like Jaws 3 or something like that. So
[02:02:41:05 - 02:02:44:19]
Speaker 3
yeah, there's like a solid, there's some good stuff. Yeah.
[02:02:44:19 - 02:02:45:06]
Speaker 2
Oh yeah.
[02:02:45:06 - 02:02:47:08]
Speaker 3
I don't want to say a lot. There's some good stuff over there.
[02:02:47:08 - 02:02:49:06]
Speaker 2
Yeah. Um,
[02:02:50:12 - 02:02:54:05]
Speaker 2
yeah, that's what I think. I think, um, why don't I write about the end of it?
[02:02:55:06 - 02:03:01:13]
Speaker 2
Just that I do think this is a misstep after the highs of Fury Road. And then, um,
[02:03:05:10 - 02:03:10:12]
Speaker 2
I think, I think it was a mistake not giving us max again.
[02:03:10:12 - 02:03:23:11]
Speaker 3
Yeah. I think so too. Like not having some kind of Mad Max situation. Although I will say the best thing to me about this whole movie is, um, Chris Hemsworth is so fucking good in it.
[02:03:23:11 - 02:03:25:19]
Speaker 1
He's really is having a blast.
[02:03:25:19 - 02:03:28:11]
Speaker 3
He murders that role so well. He's so,
[02:03:28:11 - 02:03:35:20]
Speaker 2
the nose prosthetic is wild because you're like, wow, just a slight difference in his nose makes him almost unrecognizable.
[02:03:35:20 - 02:03:48:07]
Speaker 3
Yeah. Completely. And like this character is so despicable, but charismatic, but dumb and smart at the same time. Like that is a hard role to play and he just nails it.
[02:03:48:07 - 02:03:48:23]
Speaker 2
Yeah.
[02:03:48:23 - 02:03:51:08]
Speaker 3
Um, clearly has a blast doing it.
[02:03:51:08 - 02:03:57:17]
Speaker 2
I think, you know what I, what I really wanted was if we're going to, the end of the film is her going into the wives.
[02:03:57:17 - 02:03:58:02]
Speaker 3
Yeah.
[02:03:58:02 - 02:03:59:05]
Speaker 2
And I'm like,
[02:04:00:09 - 02:04:00:21]
Speaker 2
Oh, well, yeah.
[02:04:02:13 - 02:04:26:08]
Speaker 2
Charlize still looks like Charlize at least. Yeah. Why can we have had Charlize in the last scene and just say this takes place sometime later. She is a grown woman now and everything. And the problem with Anna Taylor joy is she's very pretty, but she's also kind of alien looking. She's very, very unique. And it makes her look way younger than she is. So it's like, I just would have loved just a little nod to Charlize at that.
[02:04:26:08 - 02:04:28:07]
Speaker 3
That would be pretty good. I agree.
[02:04:29:10 - 02:04:49:19]
Speaker 1
Uh, they did have for fury road. They wrote this script. Oh, the, in order to tell the story, cohesively or Miller said, we had to know everything that happened on the time before. So they wrote about Furiosa taken as a child series on Fury Road until she became the driver.
[02:04:51:14 - 02:04:54:17]
Speaker 1
So it's almost like we should have done that one.
[02:04:56:12 - 02:04:57:08]
Speaker 1
But, um,
[02:04:58:21 - 02:05:12:01]
Speaker 1
the, the actors, designers, everybody on fear road got that script before working on fury road. So they all knew the background. There was talk about doing it as a anime as well during that time.
[02:05:12:01 - 02:05:16:13]
Speaker 3
That would have been wildly interesting too. I could totally see this playing as an anime.
[02:05:16:13 - 02:05:18:09]
Speaker 1
Yeah. The
[02:05:20:12 - 02:05:28:22]
Speaker 1
Miller's audition speech. Everybody has to do mad as hell from that notebook. That speech from that is hell. Wow.
[02:05:28:22 - 02:05:31:03]
Speaker 2
From network. Yep. Um,
[02:05:32:07 - 02:05:36:13]
Speaker 2
what a wild choice that has nothing to do with the movie we're going to make.
[02:05:36:13 - 02:06:06:14]
Speaker 1
It does have a really good escalation of anger and nuance, but yes. Okay. Their rehearsal process was really interesting. It was kind of long, but it wasn't a usual rehearsal process. They largely got together in rooms as a groups and, and talked about their characters. Yeah. Which is how that end developed from something very different to them confronting each other more. It sounded like it started out more as a fight
[02:06:08:01 - 02:06:15:19]
Speaker 1
where, uh, in the end it's, you know, battle of words and wits as opposed to them pounding on each other for 10 minutes.
[02:06:15:19 - 02:06:22:17]
Speaker 2
Yeah. If this were to be like any other Mad Max film, this would have ended with, uh, Dementias getting splattered by a semi or something.
[02:06:22:17 - 02:06:23:21]
Speaker 3
Yeah. There you go.
[02:06:26:00 - 02:06:29:04]
Speaker 1
Watermelon to the, to the fake rail. Um,
[02:06:30:14 - 02:06:37:13]
Speaker 1
the, the war pup kid that's in this was discovered by George because of a, um,
[02:06:39:00 - 02:06:52:20]
Speaker 1
uh, viral video of the, this kid crying about how he's picked on and all this stuff. And he's like thinking about maybe I don't need to live in this world anymore. And George like,
[02:06:54:02 - 02:07:04:16]
Speaker 1
fuck that. Let's bring this kid in. We're going to give him, you know, he fits into the world. Oh, this is the dwarf. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. The war, they call him a war pup kid. War pup. Okay.
[02:07:04:16 - 02:07:09:06]
Speaker 2
Cause, you know, he's got the war boy. Yeah, that's right. He's got the war boy makeup. Exactly. Yep.
[02:07:09:06 - 02:07:17:00]
Speaker 1
And, uh, brought him in and apparently he had a gloriously fun time and loved it and has been
[02:07:18:10 - 02:07:20:22]
Speaker 1
great ever since. Oh, that's a nice story.
[02:07:20:22 - 02:07:22:06]
Speaker 3
That's so good.
[02:07:22:06 - 02:07:30:00]
Speaker 1
Let's see what else we got. Oh, uh, late Lance Holm who took over the Immortan role because of, uh, he was death.
[02:07:31:01 - 02:07:39:23]
Speaker 1
Um, said it was very emotional to him. It was such a big deal that he was so worried he would do, would not do. I think he did great.
[02:07:41:05 - 02:07:46:21]
Speaker 1
The first time I watched him going, I thought didn't that guy die before this thing was made?
[02:07:46:21 - 02:07:54:08]
Speaker 2
I was like, holy cow. They got a guy who, I mean, obviously he's under a mask and makeup and everything, but he sounds just like him. And he looked a lot like him.
[02:07:54:08 - 02:08:03:00]
Speaker 3
I thought that was one of the best, like D aged roles out of the whole cast where you're just like, wow, that guy looks like the slightly younger version of that guy. It's amazing. Yep.
[02:08:04:00 - 02:08:08:16]
Speaker 1
Uh, let's see what's interesting. And this is just a kin to George millen, the way he works.
[02:08:09:19 - 02:08:14:14]
Speaker 1
Oh, all that weird stuff you see on the costuming stuff means something.
[02:08:14:14 - 02:08:15:14]
Speaker 2
Of course. Yeah.
[02:08:15:14 - 02:08:36:04]
Speaker 1
Skrotas has that his has some really weird looking stuff on it. Uh, supposed to be like fish skin because he's got a skin disease that makes him very irritated to almost all kinds of material. So he wears fish skin instead of leather or whatever. Like that is a level of thinking. I can appreciate. Yeah.
[02:08:39:10 - 02:08:45:10]
Speaker 1
They use the same road from road warrior road battles for some of the battles in this one.
[02:08:45:10 - 02:08:48:07]
Speaker 2
I noticed like this is, uh,
[02:08:50:03 - 02:08:57:00]
Speaker 2
in fury road, we never saw a road in this. We actually get a little bit of black up and it's got that and Morton Joe symbol painted on it.
[02:08:57:00 - 02:09:16:04]
Speaker 1
Well, they had to move to, uh, they didn't shoot fury road in Australia. It was shot on an Island or something like that. Interesting. That's why the, so they came back to Australia for this one. That's why they're able to use the actual road warrior stuff. Interesting. Okay. Um, and they had a whole lot of the same crew people and stuff that were on road warrior still working with that
[02:09:16:04 - 02:09:16:18]
Speaker 4
beautiful.
[02:09:16:18 - 02:09:18:22]
Speaker 2
Um, here's your case of beer.
[02:09:18:22 - 02:09:20:17]
Speaker 3
You've been Australia employed.
[02:09:22:17 - 02:09:27:01]
Speaker 1
Uh, let's see. George Miller quote music is the eternal narrator of the story.
[02:09:28:01 - 02:09:54:14]
Speaker 1
In a interview with Stephen Colbert, Chris Hermosworth was asked, what does mass Mad Max mean to Australians? Which I did not realize it was this important. Hermosworth responded Americans have star Wars, the Brits have Harry Potter and we have max. Nice. Which is part of the reason that one actor was so intense when he took over that role. It's like he's taking over Darth Vader. He's, you know, he's, he's doing something really important to his country.
[02:09:54:14 - 02:09:56:07]
Speaker 28
And he did a good job. Yeah.
[02:09:56:07 - 02:09:59:03]
Speaker 1
Hey, you're going to love where George Miller picked up and Taylor joy.
[02:10:00:19 - 02:10:03:21]
Speaker 1
Cause she thought he was, she was so good and licensed last night at Soho.
[02:10:06:14 - 02:10:08:10]
Speaker 2
She was. She was really great.
[02:10:10:00 - 02:10:11:12]
Speaker 2
I mean, you'd have to be a fool to think otherwise.
[02:10:13:15 - 02:10:18:16]
Speaker 3
I'm happy for her in him. I think she did a great job in this movie. Oh yeah, she did.
[02:10:19:18 - 02:10:20:05]
Speaker 1
Um,
[02:10:21:14 - 02:10:27:22]
Speaker 1
one disappointment I did have with Furiosa versus Fury Road is, uh, they had,
[02:10:29:01 - 02:10:40:06]
Speaker 1
Fury Road had 2000 CGI augmentations and enhancements. Not a lot of them. Furiosa had 20,000 and they show, they show at times where you're like,
[02:10:40:06 - 02:10:44:12]
Speaker 2
it's, it's, that's interesting. It's not as good looking a film as Fury Road.
[02:10:44:12 - 02:10:44:18]
Speaker 1
And
[02:10:45:20 - 02:10:49:11]
Speaker 1
I think that's part of it. I did like the addition though, the parachuting.
[02:10:51:04 - 02:10:55:05]
Speaker 1
It's like, damn, that was not CGI. But, uh, overall,
[02:10:56:10 - 02:11:03:00]
Speaker 1
good film. We have wrapped up our road and road warrior series of Mad Max series.
[02:11:04:05 - 02:11:09:00]
Speaker 2
This was a Mad Maxathon. Listen, it took a while to come up with that name. We're going to use it. I'm trademarking it.
[02:11:10:01 - 02:11:14:08]
Speaker 1
Sell the t-shirt. Let's, let's rent a theater and show all the movies.
[02:11:15:12 - 02:11:23:16]
Speaker 3
Yeah, I feel so spoiled. It's so rare that we get to go through like a whole series where they're all tolerable. Like, come on.
[02:11:23:16 - 02:11:25:19]
Speaker 1
And most of them are actually really good.
[02:11:25:19 - 02:11:26:18]
Speaker 3
Yeah.
[02:11:26:18 - 02:11:33:00]
Speaker 2
Yeah. Well, shoot then let's keep this going. It's your choice next Vanessa. What are we doing? That's not fair.
[02:11:36:16 - 02:11:49:07]
Speaker 3
So I, I'm going to suggest a new series, uh, but more pivoted towards the fact that, you know, we're coming up towards spooky season as Erica's alluded to. And, uh, we're coming up towards baby season.
[02:11:49:07 - 02:11:52:16]
Speaker 1
Oh, that's right. Oh my spooky baby
[02:11:52:16 - 02:11:56:12]
Speaker 3
season. So let's go with the Omen series.
[02:11:56:12 - 02:11:57:19]
Speaker 2
Oh, I love this.
[02:11:57:19 - 02:11:59:18]
Speaker 1
I like that is an excellent choice.
[02:11:59:18 - 02:12:02:02]
Speaker 2
I like all the movies in this. So I hope,
[02:12:02:02 - 02:12:08:10]
Speaker 3
I hope you'll be all right. I see one of them. So I am excited to get to delve into the rest.
[02:12:08:10 - 02:12:11:02]
Speaker 1
Fantastic. Is it just the original that you see?
[02:12:11:02 - 02:12:13:00]
Speaker 3
Yes, I've only seen the original. Oh man.
[02:12:13:00 - 02:12:16:03]
Speaker 2
I think this is a series that holds up very well.
[02:12:16:03 - 02:12:22:03]
Speaker 3
Okay. All right. That gives me hope. I feel guilty. It's really hard to follow up the Mad Maxathon.
[02:12:22:03 - 02:13:01:09]
Speaker 2
Yeah. Well, it's going to be a very different feeling series. That's a very quiet horror series. Yes. Yes. Okay. That's what we're doing then. When we come back is the Omen start with you and the Omen. The Omen from something, something, something. The Omen. It's the Omen. All right. Okay. That means we're at the point where we say, Hey everybody, thanks for hanging with us. Thanks for participating in the value for value deal, which is if you got any value out of this, I assume you're still watching this, uh, give some value back. We don't know what that value is. That could be a dollar. That could be $1 million. That would be great.
[02:13:02:13 - 02:13:05:06]
Speaker 2
That's a lot of value. Well, that's what I'm saying.
[02:13:05:06 - 02:13:11:23]
Speaker 1
It's not up to us. You give us a million dollars. I guarantee I convince, could convince Kelly to even let you come here. Absolutely.
[02:13:11:23 - 02:13:13:21]
Speaker 28
Be on the show.
[02:13:13:21 - 02:13:20:16]
Speaker 2
I wouldn't live here anymore if they had a million dollars donated in the show. So we split it all up and we say goodbye.
[02:13:22:07 - 02:13:23:07]
Speaker 1
Well, that's not going to get it.
[02:13:23:07 - 02:13:27:12]
Speaker 3
Don't do that. Don't do that. No, we will definitely continue the show. If you give us a million dollars,
[02:13:27:12 - 02:13:43:13]
Speaker 2
other ways to give us some value is to like and share posts, keep the algorithm going. Um, discussions on the strange eons radio talk page, commenting or liking on the YouTube page. Uh, you can reach out to us on all of those and where else Vanessa,
[02:13:43:13 - 02:13:59:11]
Speaker 3
you can also get us on the strange eons radio hotline. That phone number is two, five, three, two, three, seven, four, two, six, six. Uh, you can send us a text message. You can leave us a voicemail. Eric will happily listen probably and respond to
[02:14:00:14 - 02:14:06:14]
Speaker 3
you and let you know that. Yes, we got it. Thank you very much. So please reach out anytime. We'd love to hear from you guys.
[02:14:06:14 - 02:14:28:21]
Speaker 2
Yeah. All right, gang, that is it. Uh, two short weeks. We are coming back with the, oh man, see you next time. Transportation and other considerations for strange eons radio produced by pan and airlines. When you think of traveling, think of pan and you can't beat the experience. Yes. The strange eons radio stay at econolodge ever. It's an easy stop on the road.

Speaker 2
Sit, Uber sit.
[02:14:40:08 - 02:14:43:14]
Speaker 3
So this is too public. This is too public. We'll wait until after.
